Wine Description
Burn Cottage Pinot Noir Moonlight Race 2021 is a standout example of Central Otago Pinot Noir. Created by combining two unique parcels from Burn Cottage Vineyard in Lowburn and Sauvage Vineyard in Bannockburn, this wine captures the essence of the region. Winemaker Claire Mulholland has crafted a wine that is both approachable now and has cellaring potential for 8-12 years.
This top New Zealand Pinot Noir displays a vibrant and concentrated color, with a mix of dark and red hues. The nose is aromatic and enticing, filled with lifted floral notes, blue and red fruits, hints of pepper spice, and a touch of orange zest. There’s also the characteristic wet stone and mineral elements from the vineyard.
On the palate, the wine is full and layered with juicy berry flavors like boysenberry and strawberry. It has a supple texture with fine, smooth tannins that frame the wine beautifully. The taste includes wonderful savory and herb tones, supported by spice, red fruit, pepper, and a mineral complexity that adds depth. The finish is long and flavorful, with a smoky edge that lingers.
The 2021 Burn Cottage Pinot Noir vintage had a very warm and dry spring, with some frost fighting required. The season saw a high diurnal range with low overnight temperatures, and a significant amount of rain in January. Favorably warm and dry weather returned from February through to harvest, ensuring the grapes reached optimal ripeness while retaining good acidity.
Critical acclaim for Burn Cottage Pinot Noir Moonlight Race 2021 includes a 95-point score from James Suckling. He praised the wine for its boysenberry and strawberry aromas and flavors, underlying smoky and mineral edge, and beautiful tannins. He noted its full-bodied nature and long, flavorful finish, calling it gorgeous and curated.
Burn Cottage believes in biodynamic farming, ensuring healthy and minimal intervention in their winemaking process. The wine is aged in French oak barrels from Damy, Mercurey, and Sylvain cooperages, with 22% new oak, and is bottled unfined and unfiltered. This approach highlights the unique and significant characteristics of the vineyard sites.

Not sure i agree with the hype at least at this point in its evolution. Fairly short finish with not a lot of complexity. Again it is early so maybe it evolves

Lots of boysenberry and strawberry aromas and flavors with an underlying smoky and mineral edge. It’s full and layered with beautiful tannins and a long and flavorful finish. A little tight at the end. Gorgeous and curated.
