From the esteemed slopes of Mount Saint Helena in Knights Valley, the Peter Michael winery presents its distinguished Peter Michael Les Pavots Cabernet Sauvignon 2018. Crafted under the skilled guidance of winemaker Robert Fiore, this blend epitomizes the art of fine winemaking. Reflecting the rich heritage and the vibrant flora of its region, notably the wild California poppies, ‘˜Les Pavots’ encapsulates a harmonious symphony of flavors and aromas.

This blend is a masterful composition of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot. The vineyard, with its rocky volcanic-origin Rhyolite soil and a favorable south-facing exposure, rests at an elevation of 900″1,400 feet. The unique terroir, along with meticulous winegrowing practices, imparts a distinctive character to the wine.

The 2018 vintage benefitted from above-average winter rainfall and a mild spring. The steady, warm temperatures throughout the year, coupled with a well-timed veraison, brought the grapes to perfect ripeness, imbuing the wine with a rich spectrum of flavors.

On the visual aspect, Peter Michael Les Pavots Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 presents a deep ruby color with a red-purple rim, indicating its youthful vigor. The wine opens up with a sophisticated bouquet, blending the freshness of violets with the sweet notes of blueberries and boysenberries. This fruity essence harmonizes with the native wild garrigue and an underlying crushed stone minerality, a tribute to its volcanic soil heritage.

The palate reveals a full-bodied and elegant experience. It offers a lavish array of flavors, from the richness of blackberry pie and Albion strawberries to the savory notes of tobacco and cigar box. Subtle hints of cedar, vanilla bean, and black pepper add to its complexity. The wine boasts a well-structured and lengthy finish, marking its high caliber.

The critical acclaim for Peter Michael Les Pavots Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 speaks volumes. James Suckling awarded it 97 points, praising its sweet berries, black olives, and fresh herbs nuances, alongside a full-bodied structure with polished tannins. Jeb Dunnuck also gave it 97 points, highlighting its minerality, graphite notes, and powerful, balanced elegance. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate bestowed 96 points, emphasizing its intense scents of blackcurrant preserves, ripe black plums, and boysenberries, along with a full-bodied palate that’s densely packed with black fruits and earthy layers.

Peter Michael Les Pavots 2018, aged eighteen months in 100% French oak barrels, is bottled unfined to preserve its natural integrity. Released on April 1, 2021, with an alcohol content of 15.5%, it stands as a testament to the winery’s commitment to excellence. This wine, approachable in its youth, is destined to evolve gracefully over the next two decades, continually unveiling its depth and elegance.

The Peter Michael Les Pavots Cabernet Sauvignon 2018, hailing from the Peter Michael Winery Les Pavots vineyards, is more than just a wine; it’s a legacy in a bottle. Its intricate layers and profound complexity make it a stunning addition to any collection, promising a delightful journey with each sip. Located in Knights Valley, Sonoma, the Les Pavots vineyard is located in the oldest of the estate-owned sites, planted in 1989. It is situated at 1,000-1,400 feet and is quite steep in areas. Composed of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot, the 2018 Les Pavots is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. It needs a fair bit of coaxing to unlock the intense scents of blackcurrant preserves, ripe black plums and boysenberries with touches of wild sage, tobacco leaf and pencil shavings. The full-bodied palate is densely packed and tightly wound with loads of black fruits, dried herbs and earthy layers, supported by firm, grainy tannins and bold freshness, finishing long and energetic. 3,255 cases were made.

    Jeb Dunnuck
More minerality, graphite, and scorched earth notes emerge from the 2018 Les Pavots. Full-bodied and uber-concentrated, it reveals building tannins, awesome mid-palate depth, and one heck of a great finish. It's a serious, powerful, blockbuster beauty that also holds onto perfect balance and a beautiful sense of elegance. It will keep for two decades or more.

    James Suckling
Love the sweet berries, black olives, tile and fresh herbs on the nose with floral undertones. Oyster shell, too. Full-bodied with round, creamy tannins that are beautifully polished and refined. Very long finish. All about finesse and wonderful length. 68% cabernet sauvignon, 19% cabernet franc, 10% merlot and 3% petit verdot. Drink after 2023.
