Pinea 2018 is an exquisite artisan wine from Bodegas Pinea Del Duero, crafted with utmost care and dedication to showcase the essence of the terroir. It takes inspiration from the majestic Pinea tree, the oldest and tallest in the region, symbolizing the deep-rooted connection with the land. Sourced from 30-year-old vines, some of which are over 90 years old, growing at an altitude of 3,000 ft on clay-loam terrain, Pinea embodies the essence of the Spanish terroir.
The 2018 vintage benefited from near-perfect climate conditions, which contributed to the wine’s exceptional structure and complexity. The grapes recovered from the late freeze of April 2017, and two years of organic and bio-dynamic viticulture further enhanced their quality. The manual harvesting in small baskets and careful grape selection ensured that only the finest grapes were used in the winemaking process.
In appearance, Pinea 2018 is an unctuous wine with a deep ruby red color and a garnet rim, displaying high and deep layers that catch the light beautifully. On the nose, a grand melange of fruit, floral, and spicy tones delights the senses. Dominant aromas of black fruit, such as blackberries, ripe black plum, dried fig, strawberries, and black cassis, mingle with exquisite perfumy scents of hibiscus, cocoa, violets, and lavender. Hints of mineral notes, mild tobacco leaves, fresh leather, and an elegant toasted background complete the aromatic profile.
The palate reveals a medium-bodied wine with a powerful and elegant approach, accompanied by a velvety and rich texture that carries through from the front to the back palate. Sculpted tannins are seamlessly integrated, and the wine displays perfect balance with vibrant acidity and a long, savory finish. Flavors of black forest fruits, blackberries, and ripe black plum are complemented by scents of eucalyptus, clove, black pepper, mild nuttiness, coffee, and smoke, which enrich the harmonious finish.
Renowned critics have applauded Pinea 2018, with Wine Spectator awarding it an impressive 95 points. The wine’s rich and concentrated character, coupled with its freshness and elegance, leaves a lasting impression on the palate. James Suckling also praises the wine with 94 points, highlighting its spiced plum and blackberry notes, along with sweet spices, dark chocolate, and wet earth. The polished texture, fine-grained tannins, and vivid acidity add a juicy and crunchy character, making it an exceptional wine to enjoy now or to hold for further aging until 2033.

Dark ruby wine with improved flavors after decanting for an hour. Prominent acidity and grip, accompanied by notes of black cherry.

Flickinger Customer Appreciation Tasting in Chicago: Young, rich black cherry with a complex spicebox. Needs time to age gracefully.

    3. Katherine Harris

This wine offers flavors of berries, dry plums, earthy tannins, cherries, currants, and smoky notes.

    4. Julie Mcgee

Intensely sweet with dark fruit notes and prominent oak. Thick and almost overwhelming. Needs more time, but not my preferred style.

    5. Vincent Mendez

Needs aging. Wait minimum 5 years.

    6. Teresa Bell

“Dads Cellar’s exclusive ‘Hogs Head’ delivers ripe cherry and red berries with hints of dried herbs. A dark cherry and menthol palate, with a weighty, waxy feel. Precisely crafted for a full-bodied, international style. Pleasurable earthy finish. Perfect for steak lovers.”

    7. Michael Smock

Better balance than the 2017 vintage. Var “svesket” (plummy).
