Here, the grapes flourish alongside the vineyard’s red Bordeaux varietals, benefiting from steep slopes, excellent drainage, and the cool, refreshing air at higher altitudes. The fruit for ‘ L’ Apres Midi is meticulously hand-picked and sorted, then whole-cluster pressed and naturally fermented in barrels. This process, which intentionally omits a second malolactic fermentation, is crucial in preserving the wine’s inherent fruity and zesty character. The blend predominantly features Sauvignon Blanc, complemented by just a touch of Semillon, creating a harmonious balance of flavors.
The 2022 vintage of Peter Michael L Apres Midi Sauvignon Blanc was shaped by a year of climatic contrasts. Following a December blessed with ample rain, January and February were relatively dry, leading to an earlier-than-usual budbreak. The cooler, rainy conditions of March, April, and early May resulted in less fruit setting, mirroring the lower yields of 2021. The summer months brought their own challenges, with June and August experiencing intense heat spikes, and a significant heat wave in early September pushing temperatures above 110 degrees F (43 degrees C). This extreme weather pattern affected the final blocks of Sauvignon Blanc to be harvested. However, the arrival of rain and a subsequent drop in temperature allowed the Semillon grapes to ripen gradually to perfection by early October. The harvest for Sauvignon Blanc spanned from August 25 to September 7, while the Semillon was harvested between October 4 and 11.
In the winery, each lot of Peter Michael wines are aged separately on its lees for nine months, undergoing gentle stirring to enhance its complexity and texture.
