Adelaida Cabernet Franc Signature Series 2019, crafted by the skilled hands of winemaker Jeremy Weintraub, is a quintessential representation of the varietal’s elegance and complexity. This wine, originating from the Viking Estate Vineyard, nestled within the Adelaida District of the Paso Robles AVA, is a pure expression of Cabernet Franc. The vineyard’s elevations range from 1400 to 1700 feet, featuring calcareous limestone soil, and benefit from the unique microclimate of the Santa Lucia Mountain Range. This area is known for its significant diurnal temperature swings, which contribute to the grapes’ balanced ripening.

The 2019 vintage of the Adelaida Cabernet Franc Signature Series is particularly noteworthy, owing to the climatic conditions of the preceding winter and the growing season. The winter of 2018-2019 brought 24 inches of rain, including an unusual mid-May shower. These conditions led to early vine vigor, resulting in a lush canopy and dense grape clusters. Despite some high temperatures between June and September, the overall moderate summer was ideal for the development of the wine’s intricate flavor profile.

In terms of vinification, the grapes were hand-sorted and de-stemmed upon arrival at the winery. The fermentation process utilized indigenous yeast cultures in a combination of large oak foudres. This was followed by a brief maceration period and culminated in 20 months of aging in 60% new French oak barrels. This meticulous process ensures the wine’s distinctive character and quality.

The Adelaida Cabernet Franc Signature Series 2019 greets the eye with a deep, inviting hue, hinting at the richness and depth it offers. The aroma is a symphony of black cherry, rose perfume, sagebrush, roasted jalapeño, and violet, creating a bouquet that is both complex and harmonious. Each scent complements the others, providing a tantalizing preview of the flavors to come.

On the palate, the wine reveals layers of stewed black cherry, blackberry, anise, and black currant liqueur. These rich and robust flavors are elegantly balanced by the wine’s natural acidity and the subtle influence of the French oak, which imparts a gentle hint of vanilla and spice. The texture is smooth, with well-integrated tannins that contribute to a long, satisfying finish.

Jeremy Weintraub, with his expertise and vision, has highlighted Cabernet Franc’s potential in the Paso Robles region. He recognizes the varietal’s ability to thrive in the heat and drought conditions of the area, which translates into a wine with unique aromatic and flavor profiles. This vintage, with its harmony of aromas and flavors, showcases black cherry, violet, and cedarwood, seamlessly merging with blackberry, anise, and sweet tobacco notes.

The Adelaida Cabernet Franc Signature Series 2019 is not only a testament to the winemaker’s skill but also to the unique terroir of the Adelaida District. The wine is an excellent choice for pairing with rich, savory dishes such as grilled ribeye and asparagus over garlic and muenster polenta, or a black caviar lentil bolognese. These pairings will enhance the wine’s flavor profile, creating a memorable culinary experience.

With an alcohol content of 14.7%, and a limited production of 340 cases, this wine is a rare gem. It is best enjoyed now or can be cellared to evolve gracefully through 2034. Retailing at $80.00, the Adelaida Cabernet Franc Signature Series 2019 is a superb addition to any wine enthusiast’s collection, reflecting the best of what Paso Robles and the Adelaida estate have to offer.

Cabernet Franc wines are celebrated for their delicate and aromatic nature, especially when young. They share some similarities with Cabernet Sauvignon but are distinguished by a distinctive green, vegetal note that ranges from leafy and garrigue to green bell pepper. This unique characteristic has occasionally led wine enthusiasts to mistake Cabernet Franc for unripe Cabernet Sauvignon or even...Please check Cabernet Franc for more information
