Wine Description
Ramey Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2017 is an exceptional wine crafted by Ramey Wine Cellars under the expertise of renowned winemaker David Ramey. This wine showcases the unique terroir of Napa Valley, with its complex geology and soil composition. The grapes for this wine are sourced from the base of the valley, where the broken down or decomposed rock from the Vaca and Mayacamas ranges intermingle with silt, clay, and gravel deposits from the Napa River flood plain.
Composed primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon, with smaller proportions of Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc, this wine exhibits a deep ruby color that entices the senses. The nose is greeted with enticing aromas of Morello cherries, chocolate, mushrooms, savory herbs, and a hint of pipe tobacco, as noted by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.
On the palate, the wine’s refined tannins, coated through aging sur lies with batonnage, deliver a tight and textured experience. Flavors of black currant, crushed rock, and a touch of toasted oak contribute to the wine’s rich profile. The integration of 60% new French oak barrels from Taransaud and Demptos lends subtle complexity and enhances the overall structure. Native-yeast and malolactic fermentations further elevate the wine’s character and depth.
Wine Enthusiast awards this wine an impressive 95 points, praising its intense flavor and texture, along with accents of cedar, char, and celery salt. Similarly, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate awards it 95 points, highlighting its powdery and plush full-bodied palate, layered finish, and alluring streaks of herbal character. Wine Spectator, with a score of 90 points, commends its mellow and understated profile, featuring notes of gently mulled cherry, red licorice, sweet bay leaf, and worn cedar.
Ramey Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2017 is a testament to Ramey Wine Cellars’ commitment to producing exceptional wines that showcase the best of Napa Valley. With its harmonious blend of varietals and meticulous craftsmanship, this wine can be enjoyed now or cellared for a few more years to enhance its already impressive qualities.

Cindy Williams –
Tasty MW 2017 Cabernet from the Americas with a nose and palate of blackberry, black cherry, and ash. Medium/big body, slightly fruit-forward, and mouth-filling fruit. Needs 2 years to peak drinking time with a medium/long finish.
Mary Geer –
Soft and ripe cab with savory notes, but a possible sulfur issue causing a mushroomy taste. A bit dilute.
Lori Johnston –
Recommend decanting for 1-1.5 hours. Nose of dark red fruits and oak, with a hint of green that disappears with air. Medium-bodied with balancing acidity, medium finish, and medium to minus tannins. Not very complex, needs another year in the cellar, will hold for several years after.
Jonathan Portwood –
Balanced and well-made with good fruit, spice, and slight herbal notes. Elegant with tannic grip. Nicely balanced but not very complex. 90-92.
Samuel Gerace –
Flavors of black fruit, pepper, baking spice, and licorice with a long finish on well-integrated tannins.
Joseph Wallace –
Tasty wine with grape notes and a hint of Bloody Mary.
Jose Brown –
2015 vintage needs cellar time, tannic and complicated, 2016 likely better.
Patricia Smith –
Great potential. Decant for 4 hours if opened soon.
Josephine Snyder –
Balanced and well-made with small berry notes typical of 2015 and a hint of cedar oak. Enjoyable for the next decade.
Jeffery Colon –
Unclear if chaotic or improving with age.
Erica Waters –
Review: Cave wine, not recommended.
Richard Morgan –
Subpar taste, not as good as the 2014s. Not a strong cab.
Susan Smith –
Complexity of blackberry, camphor, cassis, black cherry and cigar box. Medium-bodied with polished tannins and a medium-long finish. Decant or wait a year. Drink 2021 – 2033.
Shawn Hooper –
Fruit forward with inky complexity, medium acidity, and lingering tannins. Can be cellared or enjoyed now.
Phillip Marlin –
Improved on second night.
Jo Nevin –
Great Cabernet Sauvignon with ripe fruit that represents the vintage perfectly. Perfect time to drink. Cheers.
Jeffery Mansfield –
Great QPR wine with dark fruit, pencil lead, and mid-palate depth. Slightly cloying towards the end.
Patrick Little –
Dark garnet with spicy vanilla nose. Ripe, round cab fruit with chewy tannins. Best within few years. 91/100.
Mina Jones –
Classic style Cab with cassis, cherry, cedar, and cacao notes. Medium body with good acidity, white pepper finish. Great food wine.
Karen Pena –
“Earthy old world style. Enjoy now or cellar for later.”
Teresa Lynch –
Medium dark garnet red. Rich dark fruit nose. Flavors build to reveal pleasant dark red fruit flavors. This wine in more in the style of Bordeaux.
Mathew Morehead –
Excellent 2015 wine found at Costco, ready to drink. Cheers!
Elijah Peterson –
Fun and enjoyable drinking. Bright red cherry and spice with a subtle oak finish. Not too restrained nor bombastic.
Emilia Tu –
Balanced and drinkable, but oak is still present.
Juanita Sarkin –
Disappointing, thin and washed out. Second bottle was the same, not a one-off issue.
Jessie Willard –
Precise tannins and focused purity on the nose make this Cabernet blend a weighty and complex wine.
Peter Plantz –
Great value for money. Decanted for an hour, enjoyed over 4. Evolved nicely, no rush to drink. Nice notes of red and black fruit. Will wait a year or two to try again.
Patricia Collins –
One-dimensional and oak-heavy after 6 years. Bought a case on closeout, hoping the remaining 9 bottles will improve.
Elizabeth Peterson –
Nice blend and flavor with fruity and spicy notes. Drinkable now, but can improve with more time in the cellar.
Lois Skinner –
Ripe modern Margaux nose. Soft, rich and straightforward taste. Lacks a bit of complexity but still enjoyable.
Dennis Patterson –
There’s a line between California sunshine and Bordeaux tradition. This wine doesn’t just straddle the line, it stands right on top of the line. First impression is the exuberance of California, but it is reigned in with structure, as well as additional flavor elements from the blending components that bring notes of earth and green. The oak influence is moderate, and subservient to the fruit. Overall there’s balance for aging, but it’s also a pleasing drink today. I would hope to be able to leave a couple of bottles for 10-15 years of additional cellar time, but I doubt I will be that patient. In the context of Napa Valley Cabernet this is an outstanding value at $65 list price.
George Hernandez –
California valley wine, full-bodied and perfect with food.
Dan Bergeron –
Contrary to positive notes on CT, tasted watered-down, flabby, plain. Bad bottle?
Steven Hill –
Garnet-colored wine with fast legs and no sediment. Smells like blackberry, black currant, and medium toast. Full-bodied with a round texture and medium acidity. Finishes medium.
Edith Yost –
Soft, fruit-forward with dark plum & black cherry notes. Adequate tannins and soft finish. Perfect with 2016 Ch d’Armailhac.

Decant for a rounder taste. Notes of black plum, cherry, and dried herbs.
Harry Hollabaugh –
Vibrant with cherry, strawberry, and dark plum notes. Smooth finish.

Balanced wine with jammy fruit and tannins. Perfect to drink now.
Tony Tarver –
Excellent juice with lovely blue fruit, savory flavors of sandalwood, mocha and bay leaf. Benefits from an hour or two of air. Pairs well with food.
Harold Williams –
Bordeaux-esque.
Vernon Moman –
Good wine that opens up well, ready to drink. Good value for money from Costco. Would purchase again.
William Shaver –
Deep magenta color. Aromas of peanut butter, black cherry, and porcini. Smooth, dry taste with full tannins and a long finish.
Fred Long –
PNP. Cherry nose with cedar. Blue fruit, sour medium finish. High alcohol, smooth tannins. Young, re-try tomorrow. Potential for improvement.
Tim Adams –
Balanced fruit and terroir. Dominated by violets and blue fruit with hints of cherry. Value for money at $55, despite 14.5% alcohol bite. Open for business.
Susie Garcia –
Delicious wine with balanced fruit flavors. Smooth initially and improved with aeration.
Marie Peyser –
Aging nicely. 2015’s are a delight. Balanced with good fruit, light tannins and acidity. Enjoy now or in the next few years. Cheers.
Robin Aiello –
Med ruby with red licorice, black & morello cherry, blackberry, red raspberry, caraway seed, lavender, tomato leaf, menthol & smoked sage notes. Medium bodied with red & black cherry, black plum, red & black raspberry, bitter chocolate, & unsweetened Turkish coffee. Tannins are med with nice grip and good balance & acidity. (91+)
Flora Bryan –
French nose meets American body: fresh, mildew, chocolate, cherries, cedar, velvety.
Tanya Beauregard –
’16 cab with good depth, balance & acidity. Needs more time than others from this vintage. Fair price.
Paulette Hernandez –

Ethel Thomas –
Decant for optimal experience. Notes of cedar, smoke, cinnamon, and cherry.
John Ochoa –
Flat and low on acidity.
Sherri Green –
2016 Dave Ramey Cali Cab is traditional and elegant with a great finish. Noticeable oak needs some age to integrate. Evolves favorably for at least a decade.
Anne Dillard –
Blind tasting, integrated nose of oak and blueberry pie. Cassis, dark fruit, and a finish of vanilla. Probably a $100 Napa Cabernet from 2016. 91 rating, drink now or hold for 2-3 years at most.
Daniel Golden –
Serious with blackberry, cassis, vegetable notes, and vanilla. High acidity, oak, and chocolate finish. 2015 Napa. $80-100. 91. Drink now with a decant through 2030.
Jeffrey Valine –
Great value for California Cabernet Sauvignon. Balanced dark fruit with a smooth, long finish. Pairs well with prime ribeye and truffle fries. Not overly complex, but satisfying.
Christina Mull –
“Best after decanting for 2 hours.”
Merrill Yu –
Deep ruby red with notes of tobacco and earth. Savory with dark fruit flavors, and tannins that make your mouth pucker. Not 100% cabernet sauvignon, more like petit verdot. Not my taste, but not bad overall.
James Parker –
Acidic, age until 2026.
Charles Small –
Great wine. Repeat purchase.
Luis Gilbert –
Well-balanced and ready to drink. Minimal decanting required. Opens up nicely in the glass. Cheers!
Alice Moses –
Cherry, tobacco, and cedar notes. Opens nicely.

Bold and robust, with a dry finish.
Angela Baldwin –
Wonderful cab with gentle berry flavors and no harsh notes.

Excellent winemaking by David Ramey. Dark berries, currants, raspberry. Moderate tannins, a bit bitter. Decant or wait a few years to ease tannins.
Leonard Johnston –
Smooth and pleasant.
Aaron Bloomfield –
Decent for the first two days, but excellent on the third day with softened tannins and low acidity. However, not much left in the bottle.
Kristyn Simple –
Napa cabernet with dark fruit, balanced oak, great acidity, tannins, medium-bodied, live mouthfeel, and long finish after an hour decant.
