The Ridge Zinfandel Paso Robles 2021, skillfully crafted by winemaker John Olney of Ridge Vineyards, embodies the rich and vibrant character of Zinfandel from the esteemed Benito Dusi Ranch in Paso Robles. This wine offers a compelling narrative of flavor and tradition, presenting a deep garnet color that captivates the eye and promises a complex palate. Upon opening a bottle, you are immediately greeted with robust aromas of cherry, ripe plum, and strawberry compote, complemented by subtle hints of spearmint and toasted oak.

As you take the first sip, the Ridge Zinfandel showcases its medium body and elegant structure. Dominant flavors of ripe Bing cherry burst forth, enhanced by a zesty acidity that makes the initial taste remarkably mouthwatering. This is beautifully intertwined with layers of exotic spices and subtle earth tones that weave through the tasting experience, leading to a long, satisfying finish. The finish is noteworthy for its expressive minerality and balanced complexity, highlighted by the wine’s fleshy tannins and crisp, lively acidity.

The 2021 vintage of this Zinfandel is a testament to the resilience and capability of the vineyard, especially during a challenging year with less than five inches of winter rainfall. The dry conditions, however, did not hinder the vibrancy of the fruit; instead, they contributed to the concentrated flavors evident in each glass. Harvested in the last week of September, the grapes reached optimal ripeness, indicated by an average Brix of 25.5. This meticulous timing ensured that the grapes retained their natural freshness and spice, characteristics beloved by Zinfandel enthusiasts.

In terms of maturation, the wine was aged for sixteen months in barrels, a mix of 90% American oak and 10% French oak, with varying degrees of newness. This aging process has imbued the Ridge Zinfandel with a refined complexity that supports its fruit-driven core with a gentle oak influence, adding layers of texture and flavor that are both nuanced and inviting.

Critical acclaim for the Ridge Zinfandel has been consistently high, reflecting its excellence and appeal. Wine Spectator awarded it 93 points, noting its deep structure and appealingly briary nature, which perfectly encapsulates the best qualities of Paso Robles Zinfandel. Jeb Dunnuck gave the wine 94 points, appreciating its medium-bodied elegance and the seamless integration of classic Zinfandel flavors like red and black plums, peppery herbs, and sweet spices. These reviews not only underscore the wine’s high quality but also its ability to represent its terroir with integrity and grace.

The heritage of the Benito Dusi Vineyard, where this Zinfandel is sourced, adds a historical richness to the wine. Planted in 1922, and unusually so just after the onset of Prohibition, the vineyard has been a source of high-quality Zinfandel for Ridge Vineyards since the 1967 vintage. This long-standing relationship emphasizes the deep-rooted connection between the vineyard and the winery, showcasing their joint commitment to producing exceptional wines that reflect the unique characteristics of the region.

For those interested in the nuances of winemaking, the Ridge Zinfandel is a masterclass in balance and refinement. Employing 100% natural primary and secondary fermentation processes and minimal intervention techniques, the winemaking team at Ridge Vineyards ensures that the wine expresses the purest form of its fruit while maintaining environmental responsibility. This approach not only enhances the wine’s quality but also aligns with the broader values of sustainability and stewardship that are increasingly important among discerning wine drinkers.

Pairing this Zinfandel with food offers numerous possibilities. Its robust profile and spicy undertones make it an excellent match for hearty dishes like grilled meats, barbecued ribs, or rich pasta sauces. The wine’s vibrant fruit flavors also make it a delightful companion to lighter fare, such as a charcuterie board featuring aged cheeses and smoked meats, where it can truly shine without overwhelming the palate.

In conclusion, the Ridge Zinfandel Paso Robles 2021 is more than just a bottle of wine; it is a celebration of heritage, craftsmanship, and the distinct personality of Paso Robles Zinfandel. With its impressive array of flavors, balanced structure, and deep, inviting color, this wine is designed to delight enthusiasts and casual drinkers alike. Whether you’re exploring zinfandel wine prices, seeking a quintessential Paso Robles Zinfandel, or simply looking to enjoy a superb example of what zinfandel from Ridge can offer, the Ridge Zinfandel Paso Robles 2021 will not disappoint. Enjoy it today or over the next decade as it continues to evolve and reveal new facets of its character.

The 2021 Zinfandel Paso Robles, from the Benito Dusi Ranch, is plump, juicy and full of Paso exuberance. Succulent red cherry/plum fruit, sweet spice, pomegranate and pipe tobacco are nicely amplified. Bright acids balance the natural raciness of the fruit admirably.

This starts out quiet, with scents of licorice, tar and soft, dark fruit. Three days later, it’s aromatically alive, yielding scents of carob, cinnamon, five-spice and pepper, with warm, plummy Paso fruit to cushion it.
