Maria Rajan –
Hedonistic and refined with searing acidity and high alcohol. Spring flowers, tar, vanilla cake batter, dried herbs. Candied and accessible but needs 3-4 years.
David Hodges –
Saxum wine is rich, dark, and voluptuous with flavors of raspberry, plum, cherry, spice, and tar. Evolves over the next day or two.
Joshua Cullison –
Intense flavors of sweet red cherry, dark fruit, violets, tar, vanilla cake batter, and dried herbs with searing acidity and alcohol. Drink now or wait 5+ years.
Dora Tate –
Intense, deep, and long. Dark cherry, cassis, boysenberry jam, and saddle leather. Pure power.
Paul Dodson –
First taste of 17 Saxum and G2. Grenache dominates with ripe strawberry and candied flavors. Potpourri, lavender, and mineral tannins emerge after 90 minutes. Drink now, 16’s need time.
Aurora Worcester –
Full-bodied with black fruit, cassis, leather, and a minute plus finish. An atypical number of grape varietals make it a fun guessing game with friends. Comparable to a California cab, it’s meant to be consumed young but could be aged until 2026.
Douglas Kohnke –
Brilliant extract, hard to hate. Gobs of peach, fresh acidity, fine tannins. Long tea-infused finish. Arizona peach ice tea on steroids. Brilliant treat. Drink now.
George Newsome –
Tasty with dominant spicy red fruits, vanilla, baking spices, leather, and mineral notes. Pure Saxum. I suggest holding it for improved taste.
Anthony Chappell –
Fruity nose, sweet Grenache fruit with red berries and licorice. Complex with good balance but slightly acidic. Mouthfilling with a long taste.
Carol Peeler –
The G2 2015 blend is a must-try for wine enthusiasts. The nose is a unique mix of flowers and baking spices, while the taste is silky smooth and delicious.
Theron Charles –
Saxum’s Grenache is sweet-savory, well-structured, and best enjoyed after decanting. It’s one of the best Grenaches in California.
Brianna Medel –
Intensely structured with heavy oak. Hold onto it for a while.
Peter Wilson –
Excellent wine with notes of black cherry, raspberry, strawberry, rhubarb, milk chocolate, cinnamon, clove, iron, beef blood, and bloody steak. Ideal for both PnP and with 2 hours of air. Great concentration and balance.
David Bonilla –
Great! Initially, northern-like with a hint of austerity but opened up beautifully.
Karen Hairston –
Deep ruby color, dark berries on the nose. BlackBerry, raspberry, and chocolate on the palate with balanced tannins. Beautiful wine that will improve with age. Wait 2 years to open next one.
Barbara Brown –
Nice blend, higher alcohol content (13.8%). Young but has potential, should age for at least 3 years. Cheers!
Alice Mullens –
Dark and dense with mixed berry liqueurs, dried herbs, violets, and vanilla. Best in 10 years.
Marisa Stevens –
G2 is a good wine with high age potential. Best taste after 4-hour decanting or holding.
Geraldine Welborn –
Great vineyard for early drinking, super-accessible vintage. Can’t resist, never tried aged.
Jason Hebert –
Deep, rich wine. 5-hour decant needed, but worth it. Drinking well now, can age 5 more years. Evolving in glass, 40-second finish. Bravo Smith.
Minnie Nichols –
Dark red, berry-filled nose, nice acidity, long-lasting taste, gentle tannins. A bottle that vanishes quickly!
Gail Switzer –
Decadent and rich wine. Long-lasting finish. Pure pleasure in a glass.
Daniel Hill –
Opened, poured a taste, decanted and returned to the bottle., Tasted about 6 hours later. , Dark ruby-purple color. , Nose offers black fruits with a touch of earth and fresh beef – element of raw beef and a wisp of smoke. , There is a floral note here – lavender and violet – as well. , That floral note appears on the intro, followed by rich black fruits and some acidity to give the wine lift., The wine seems cool – with mineral/saline notes. , Well balanced and in a complete package of fruit, savory and floral components and minerality that keeps things interesting., Outstanding.
Rebecca Helbig –
Well-integrated, in drinking prime, universally enjoyed.
Kimberly Graham –
Decant for 30 minutes and enjoy the smoothness. Ready now and won’t disappoint. Saxum is a wonderful producer.
Todd Rodriquez –
Explosive nose with dark cherry, strawberry, and raspberry notes. Clove, vanilla, nutmeg, and milk chocolate undertones. Tannins integrate well with a few hours in the decanter. Excellent.
Scott Zane –
“Delightful plum and cinnamon aromas with mineral and forest floor notes on the palate. Awaiting 3 hours to open was worth the wait.”
Morgan Langford –
Saxum never disappoints. Smooth tannins with medium finish. Wife approved.
Thomas Reis –
Peppery and spicy, with floral notes. Fades slightly.
Joshua Wilson –
Disappointing wine with a jammy nose and off-putting sweetness on the palate. Full-bodied and rich, but not enjoyable compared to other wines.
Nicole Perkins –
Impressive aromas of blueberry, raspberry, roasted herb, plum, and vanilla. The flavors are a delightful blend of raspberry, vanilla, roasted herb, boysenberry, and cherry. The finish lingers with cherry and blueberry notes for 30-35 seconds.
John Bonilla –
Floral with black fruits, eucalyptus, licorice, pepper, fine tannins, and zippy acidity. Delightful. Short decant. Drink/hold.
Ida Williams –
Adored it.
Judy Riley –
Excellent wine!
William Blount –
smooth as silk..great blueberry dark red cherry and mild tannins..went excellent with smoked tri’tip..could have drank right by itself and enjoyed just as much
Geraldine Willey –
Approachable than James Berry. Mild tannins with ripe red fruits, vanilla, anise and roasted earth. Needs 5+ years in bottle or all-day decant. Upside from here!
Alonzo Derry –
Coravin’d bottle. Aromas of blueberry, raspberry, melted chocolate, potpourri and hint of cherry. Flavors of blueberry, raspberry, black cherry, kirsch liquor and boysenberry. Long boysenberry and blueberry finish. Better than last time.
Betty Mcreynolds –
Savory with a touch of heat on the finish. Southern Rhône style. Perfect score with an hour of air prior to serving.
Curtis Ake –
Spectacular Rhone with a nose of violets, black cherries, underbrush, and rose petals. Exceptionally fresh with well-integrated, firm tannins. Has a bottomless pit of energy and a super long finish. Young but has a lot of potential.
Timothy Nichols –
Intense dark fruit, sweet spices, pepper, and cocoa powder. Silky profile with amazing purity and balance. Early drinking potential of 2017s, but will improve with 3-5 years of age. Love it!
Sheila Rivera –
Excellent but young with medium tannins
Natalie Girton –
Big and bold with black and blue fruit and a kick of spice. Smooth from start to finish.
Mark Tyler –
Smooth, balanced and refined with fine tannins, Pnp features black and red fruits, pepper, and a long finish. Benefits from aeration and improves on second day.
Sylvia Matlock –
Anniversary wine at McPhee’s.
George Storm –
Coravin’d bottle, opened 2 hours before. Aromas: vanilla, black cherry, plum, raspberry, roasted herb. Flavors: black cherry, plum, boysenberry, vanilla, herb. Great 35-40 finish.
Mary Collins –
Excellent Grenache-based wine with smooth, soft tannins. Perfect with Alaskan King Crab.
Charles Perez –
Delicious, vibrant richness.
Myrna Armstrong –
Amazing nose with floral and dark fruit notes, fresh palate with blueberries and plums, and a touch of spice. Better on its own. 97+.
Richard Douglas –
Full-bodied, deep red, dried fruits, high acidity and tannins. Confusing, but promising for future complexity. 92++ HOLD.
Vanessa Garland –
Corked.
Diane Nakamura –
Delicious Rhone blend with a classic Saxum taste. Softens as you sip, but 16% alcohol may be a tad too much.
Michael Hernandez –
Concentrated and rich with layers of blue and red fruit, oak spice, and a hint of salted meat. Good acidity and a long finish.
Doug Maloney –
Exceptional wine, enjoyed over a few hours without decanting.
Thomas Sears –
Complex and interesting wine. Expands beautifully day 2 with a popping finish.
Joan Miller –
Enjoyable wine with notes of blueberry, blackberry, rosemary, and cinnamon. Finishes with tannins, crisp acidity, and 16% alcohol that doesn’t feel too hot or ripe.
Russell Illuzzi –
Nearly perfect Saxum wine with dark berry nose and great Grenache taste, complemented by other grapes for complexity and mystery. Outstanding!
Laura Baker –
Fruit bomb with intense red and black fruit flavors. Smooth and delicious, but not for everyone.
Nathaniel Syrett –
Great wine, enjoyed with Sparky and mom at Sophie’s in Lake Forest.
Richard Johnson –
Best Saxum wines are G2 and James Berry. Ultra ripe fruit with mineral and herbal backing. Juicy with high acid and heat. Needs a few years to mellow.
Margaret Martinez –
Concentrated nose of dark fruit, herbs and spice. Palate has sweet dark fruit, berry liqueur, herbs, licorice and smoked meat. A perfect Southern Rhone wine.
Kenneth Hopkins –
Too boozy with red berry flavors. Not recommended.
Joann Apodaca –
2017 G2 is a fruit bomb with complex layers. Full-bodied and enjoyable, with no smoke taint. Decanting is optional.
Ruth Lopez –
Concentrated, powerful, and smooth Grenache/Mataro. Top-notch Saxum.
Mary Woodson –
Impressive!
Connie Gunia –
Rich and layered with cola, cinnamon, eucalyptus, ripe black fruits, pepper and an herbal/licorice/earthy finish. Slight heat, but dissipates with air. Decant if drinking now.
Virginia Marshall –
Dark fruit and petrol notes. Excellent! Northern Rhone style, unlike most Saxums.
Brad Ogrady –
“15.9% abv. Aromatic with black raspberry, black pepper, cassis, cinnamon, and a touch of heat. Wild and exotic. Great now, but will improve over the next decade.”
Rebecca Goodenow –
Young and ready to drink with a well-crafted blend that will improve with time. Perfect with or without food.
Simon Myers –
Mixed berry liqueur, sage, white pepper, and mineral. Needs time but drinking well.
Duncan Teel –
“Magnum-worthy wine. See previous review.”
Florence Tomlinson –
Versatile wine that lasted well over four days and paired perfectly with pizza, pasta, baked chicken, and Italian beef.
Robert Mangini –
Dark purple ink color with dark fruits, herbs, and licorice root on the nose. This big, powerful wine retains elegance and balance with good acidity. Delicious, with no smote taint despite the 2020 fires.
Miguel Lee –
Impressive Saxum wine, best on the second day after airing out. Perfectly balanced with deep, long flavors. Looking forward to more.
Richard Schuman –
Intense and filling, with dark fruit, tannins and acidity. Not fully integrated, but awesome!
James Castillo –
Hold for 5 years or decant for 6 hours. Dark fruit, chocolate, and violet notes. Massive and rich.
JD –
The 2020 G2 Vineyard, which comes from a great vineyard on the west side of Paso Robles, is based largely on Grenache but includes 21% Mourvèdre, 14% Graciano, 11% Syrah, and 2% Carignan. It shows the denser, chewier style of the vintage but has rocking levels of black fruits, charcoal, peppery herbs, and leather. Full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, it offers good tannins and outstanding length.
