Wine Description
Mastroberardino Radici Taurasi Riserva 2015, crafted by renowned winemaker Massimo Di Renzo, is a testament to the Mastroberardino family’s legacy in Italian winemaking. This Mastroberardino Radici Taurasi Riserva wine, embodying the essence of Irpinian viticulture, is produced from 100% Aglianico grapes, meticulously grown in the upper part of the Montemarano vineyard. The vineyard’s southeast exposure and clayey-limestone soil, enriched with a strong presence of skeleton, sit at an elevation of approximately 550 meters above sea level. The 20-year-old vines, trained in espalier with spurred cordon pruning, yield about 1.3 kg per vine.
The Radici Taurasi Mastroberardino undergoes classic red vinification with an extended maceration of about 25 days at controlled temperatures. It matures for approximately 30 months in a mix of French oak barriques and Slavonian oak barrels, followed by at least 40 months of bottle aging. This meticulous process contributes to the wine’s profound complexity and structure.
Visually, the Radici Taurasi Riserva 2015 presents an intense ruby red color. Its aroma is broad, complex, and refined, offering an intricate bouquet of tobacco, spices, cherry, berries, plum, and balsamic notes. On the palate, it envelops the senses with elegance. Flavors of plum, bitter cherry, strawberry jam, black pepper, and licorice beautifully unfold in the mouth. This Mastroberardino wine pairs exceptionally well with mature cheeses, truffles, porcini mushrooms, sausages, meaty ragouts, and spicy dishes.
The Mastroberardino Radici Taurasi Riserva has an impressive aging potential, gracefully maturing for 60 years or more. It’s best served at a temperature of 18°C to fully appreciate its nuances.
The Mastroberardino Radici Taurasi Riserva 2015 has garnered significant acclaim. James Suckling awarded it 96 points, highlighting its elegance, tension, and the need for patience to allow the tannins to soften. Vinous also gave it 96 points, praising its deeply seductive bouquet and silken textures. Decanter rated it 94 points, noting its powerful structure ideal for aging. Wine Spectator bestowed another 94 points, commending its layered complexity and fine-grained tannins.
The Mastroberardino Radici Taurasi Riserva is a shining example of the Mastroberardino family’s dedication to quality and their skill in producing exceptional wines. This Mastroberardino Taurasi Riserva, a flagship of the Mastroberardino Taurasi riserva wine portfolio, represents the pinnacle of their craft. The Radici Taurasi Riserva, and indeed all Radici wines, encapsulate the unique terroir of the Taurasi region, making Mastroberardino a benchmark for excellence in the world of Italian wines. The Mastroberardino Radici Taurasi, especially the Riserva variant, is not just a wine but a piece of Italian wine history, embodying the Mastroberardino family’s commitment to tradition and innovation.
