The Mastroberardino Redi More Aglianico Irpinia 2019, expertly crafted by Massimo Di Renzo, epitomizes the Mastroberardino family’s commitment to revitalizing Southern Italian viticulture. Produced from 100% Aglianico grapes, this wine captures the unique character of the family’s Mirabella Eclano estate, nestled in the Taurasi DOCG zone.

Mirroring the distinct terroir of the Irpinia Aglianico DOC, the 2019 vintage reflects the rich soils of the Mirabella Eclano estate, where deep, sandy loam is interspersed with limestone, clay, and volcanic elements. The estate’s southwest-facing vineyards, at an elevation of 400 meters, feature Espalier-trained and Cordon Spur-pruned vines, cultivated to prioritize quality over quantity.

This Mastroberardino Irpinia Aglianico underwent traditional red winemaking processes, with grapes manually harvested in late October, followed by an extended maceration period. It was aged in oak barriques for 12 months and bottle-aged for six months, striking a balance between youthful vigor and mature complexity.

The Mastroberardino Redi More Aglianico Irpinia 2019 presents a deep ruby red hue, signaling its depth and intensity. Its bouquet is a complex array of scents, opening with vibrant red fruits like strawberries and raspberries, enriched by layers of vanilla, tobacco, cocoa, and coffee. These elements add a sophisticated complexity to the wine.

On tasting, the Mastroberardino Redi More Aglianico Irpinia 2019 reveals a warm, enveloping nature. Its substantial structure is coupled with a notable smoothness, making it both robust and approachable. The wine is versatile in pairing, complementing dishes such as salumi, mushroom and truffle dishes, meat sauces, and game, enhancing various culinary experiences.

The 2019 vintage has garnered critical acclaim, notably receiving a 92-point rating from Vinous. The review highlights its unique blend of flavors, including crushed stone, exotic spices, hints of curry, and a mix of blackberries and plums. Its palate is described as silky and polished, enriched by mineral-tinged black fruits and savory herbs, culminating in a finish marked by tart raspberries and violet pastille. This characterizes the wine as a suave and pure expression of Aglianico, reminiscent of a young Taurasi but with greater immediacy.

In summary, the Mastroberardino Redi More Aglianico Irpinia 2019 stands as a testament to the rich viticultural heritage of Southern Italy and the Irpinia region. It showcases the Mastroberardino family’s dedication to quality winemaking, offering a deep dive into the complex and captivating world of Aglianico wines.

    What is Irpinia Aglianico?

Irpinia Aglianico is a red wine made from the Aglianico grape variety in the Irpinia region of Campania, Southern Italy. This region, known for its unique terroir, produces wines that are distinct from other Aglianico-based wines like Taurasi DOCG, also from the same area. Irpinia Aglianico wines, while distinct, share some similarities with the more renowned Taurasi wines but are often more approachable in their youth. They offer an excellent way to experience the Aglianico grape's versatility and the unique terroir of the Irpinia region.

What kind of wine is Aglianico?

Aglianico is a type of red wine grape known for producing full-bodied, robust wines. It's predominantly grown in the southern regions of Italy, especially in Basilicata and Campania. Aglianico is often considered one of Italy's three great grape varieties, alongside Nebbiolo and Sangiovese, due to its ability to produce high-quality, age-worthy wines. Aglianico is used to produce some highly esteemed wines, including Taurasi from Campania and Aglianico del Vulture from Basilicata. These wines are often regarded as some of the finest expressions of the Aglianico grape and are celebrated for their depth, complexity, and longevity.

    Critical Acclaim

    Vinous
Crushed stone gives way to sweet exotic spices, then hints of curry, and finally crushed blackberries and plums as the 2019 Irpinia Aglianico Re di More comes to life in the glass. This is silky and polished upon entry, gaining depths through mineral-tinged black fruits, savory herbs and rosy inner florals that form toward the close. Seamless from start to finish, the Re di More tapers off with a concentration of tart raspberries and hints of violet pastille that last incredibly long. This suave expression of pure Aglianico is going to win a lot of hearts. You get a little bit of new barrique spice, and it’s wonderfully integrated. This drinks like a baby Taurasi, but it’s much more accessible. Best after 2023.
