Pinea 17 2019 is a remarkable wine from the renowned Bodegas Pinea del Duero in the Ribera del Duero appellation of Spain. Crafted by the talented winemaker Isaac Fernandez, this wine pays homage to the significant year 2017 when the winery introduced their flagship PINEA to the market. The vineyards, situated at an elevation of approximately 3,000+ ft. above sea level, endure challenging weather conditions, including snowy winters and scorching hot summers, with drastic temperature fluctuations of up to 40 degrees between day and night.

The meticulous viticulture practices employed by the winery, emphasizing sustainability and organic methods, contribute to the distinct “mountain” character of the fruit. Hand-harvested and carefully selected grapes undergo a non-interventionist approach to vinification, allowing the fruit to shine. Following patient aging for 20 months in French oak barrels, the unique terroir and unwavering attention to detail throughout the winemaking process result in an exceptional expression of the Tempranillo varietal.

In the glass, Pinea ’17’ 2019 reveals a ruby core with a deep garnet-red rim. The nose is highly perfumed, exuding enticing aromas of dark forest berries, cherries, and ripe blackberries. Subtle hints of vanilla and delicate notes of cedar provide a pleasing backdrop to the aromatic profile.

On the palate, this wine boasts a medium body with a velvety texture and a deep, rounded finish. It offers a sensory journey as flavors unfold gracefully. The wine exhibits a well-regulated acidity derived from the mineral-rich chalky soils in which the vineyards thrive. With broad shoulders and beautifully integrated tannins, Pinea ’17’ 2019 lingers on the palate with exceptional length.

To fully appreciate the intense concentration and complex aromatics of “17” by Pinea, decant the wine for 15-30 minutes before serving at a cool temperature of 60-65 degrees Fahrenheit. For an optimal tasting experience, use a Burgundy stem to enhance the wine’s perfumed bouquet.

Pinea ’17’ 2019 captures the essence of the finest Ribera del Duero wines, combining intensity and elegance. Its fine, integrated tannins reflect the meticulous craftsmanship and the use of only the finest oak. This wine is a testament to the passion and commitment of Bodegas Pinea del Duero in producing outstanding wines that embody the essence of their remarkable terroir.

    1. Charles Sifford

Intense red wine with medium acidity and chewy tannins. Rich flavors of dark fruit, tar, cedar, tobacco, and spice. ABV: 14.5%.

    2. Madonna Durden

Flickinger Customer Appreciation Tasting (Casino Club – Chicago IL): A walk around tasting. Ripe and very ripe in a modern style. Could be enjoyable to some.

    3. Jonathan Green

This wine shows signs of maturity with a beautiful nose of boysenberry, tobacco leaf, and dirty red fruit. It has a medium body with a noticeable herbal influence and finishes with a sweeter character and noticeable acidity. It has a lot of improvement to make and is best enjoyed around 2025.

    4. Terry Garcia

Improved with one hour of aeration.

    5. John Betts

      Solid 78% rating, not bad.

    6. Oren Macchiaroli

Miller Union in Atlanta: Wife’s birthday. Dark, chewy tannins. Great nose, full Ribera character. We both loved it.

    7. Isaac Chase

Impressive weight. Tar notes. Dark fruit. Woody. Long finish. Strong tannins, not overwhelming. Enjoyable now, but potential to evolve in 5 or 10 years. Cellaring the remaining 5 bottles.

    8. James Briggs

Smooth and delightful Tempranillo. Aromas of luxardo cherries, gentle tannins, and flavors of plum with earthy hints.

    9. Kimberly Rivera

Disappointing. Overdone, lacking character. Unbelievable for a $15 California blend claiming to be from Duero.

    10. Gloria Swanson

Pleasant, uncomplicated red fruit. Enjoyable, though not complex.

    11. John Hall

Alicia’s discovery “Put a cork in it” is a must-try.

    12. Karen Brassard

Delightful, exuberant, modern Ribera aged 70% French, 30% American Oak for 18 months. Bold fruit, supple tannins. Perfect for Napa Cab lovers.

    13. Barbara Crawford

Impressive bottle with black cherry, blackberry, herbs, plums, leather, and spice aromas. Palate offers black cherry, fig, saddle leather, and red licorice. Herbal middle, firm oak finish. Full-bodied with a round mouthfeel. A very good and mature wine at 5 years old, can age for another 7 years.

    14. David Polk

Unique interpretation of the varietal. Subtle fruit and a hint of pepper. Enjoyable.

    15. Dan Beauchamp

Elegant, concentrated wine with distinct vanilla and oak notes. Reminiscent of Flor de Pingus, but with added depth from the oak. Balanced, with a medium to medium+ body.

    16. Arthur Cash

Nicely crafted, lacking excitement. Fresh fruit, but too much oak. Potential to improve with aging.

    17. Jeanne Darden

Sweet oak notes on the nose. Elegant palate. Exceptional Ribero del Duero. 15%, cork.

    18. Shirley Coolidge

Opulent and seductive. Dark-purple with ruby glints. Sweet, spicy oak and a vatful of berries on the nose. Luscious, silky, and gently spicy on the palate. Long finish with fine tannins. A gorgeous experience. Highly recommended. Cork, 15%.

    19. Ronald Hart

This wine is almost black, with a strong alcohol scent. It offers notes of dark fruit, prune, leather, and tobacco, delivering a rich and juicy taste. The fruit flavors are surprisingly prominent, with well-controlled tannins. The finish is long, leaving a buttery taste.

    20. Johnny Heard

Rich and enjoyable, this 2019 tempranillo hides its 15% alc well. Best enjoyed now for its youthful fruitiness, but may rate lower in five years. Not particularly complex, better suited for occasional drinking. Older plantings offer more complexity and less heavy fruit. 92 points today.

    21. Jan Williams

      Exquisite wine, perfect balance.

    22. Leon Stephens

Decent Ribera. Slightly sharp acidity. Thankfully fades swiftly.
