Wine Description

In the world of fine Chardonnays, the Paul Lato ‘Goldberg Variations’ No. 3 Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay 2020 stands as a masterpiece, a rare gem sought by discerning wine enthusiasts. Crafted with meticulous care by the skilled hands of winemaker Paul Lato, this limited-production marvel, consisting of only 135 cases, is a testament to the artistry of grape selection and winemaking finesse. It is a wine that emerges from the famed Los Carneros AVA, an embodiment of the expressive terroir and the creative prowess of its maker.

As the wine unfurls in the glass, it reveals a pale golden hue that glimmers with an alluring brilliance. The aromas, led by acacia flowers, transport the senses to a floral garden, while hints of wet stone minerality add a touch of intrigue. The bouquet continues to unfold, giving rise to an enchanting symphony of baked apples, lemon cream, and the subtle earthiness of hay. A delicate essence of beeswax lingers in the background, accompanied by the gentle embrace of integrated baking spices. Each inhalation deepens the connection to the vineyard’s essence, promising an experience of complexity and depth.

On the palate, this Chardonnay performs with finesse and grace, offering a smooth and lively sensation that dances like sunlight on water. Crisp green apple notes provide a refreshing introduction, while a delicate undertone of subtle spice adds layers of intrigue. The harmonious interplay of flavors culminates in a lavish embrace of butterscotch, a sweet and savory balance that leaves a lasting impression. The wine’s texture is caressing, wrapping the palate in silk, as if to further amplify its elegant nature.

The 2020 vintage of this Chardonnay is a product of the warm and dry climate of the Los Carneros region, which lent its influence to the grapes’ journey towards optimal ripeness and flavor concentration. With utmost care, the grapes were hand-harvested and gently pressed, a tribute to the meticulous dedication to quality. Aged for 16 months in 75% new French Oak barrels, the wine was nurtured to reach its zenith of character, revealing a richness that only the passage of time can bestow.

Renowned critics have sung their praises, assigning accolades that reflect the wine’s exceptional caliber. Jeb Dunnuck’s 95-point appraisal celebrates its purity, balance, and medium-bodied elegance. The wine’s pure, clean nose is likened to ripe melon and honeyed apples, with nuanced notes of toasted bread and white flowers. On the palate, the wine’s harmony and freshness are highlighted, suggesting a promising aging potential of 7-8 years, if not more.

The Wine Advocate’s score of 96 points mirrors the sentiment, elevating the Chardonnay’s charm with descriptors of baked apples, lemon cream, and a streak of matchstick. Youthfully coiled and layered, it presents a light-bodied yet satiny profile, a testament to its focus and potential for evolution. The aging journey, during which it spent 16 months in new French oak, awaits those who appreciate the rewards of patience.

Review: A tour-de-force chardonnay with notes of Meyer lemon, hazelnut, and minerality. Reminiscent of Marcassin Hudson Vineyard bottlings.

  6. WA

The 2020 Chardonnay Goldberg Variations Hyde Vineyard, from Wente vines planted in 1979, is lovely at this stage with aromas of baked apples, lemon cream, hay, beeswax, integrated baking spices with streaks of matchstick. Light-bodied and focused yet satiny and layered, it’s youthfully coiled and has the potential to blossom over many years in the cellar. It was aged for 16 months in 75% new French oak, and 135 cases were made.

  7. JD

The 2020 Chardonnay Goldberg Variations No. 3 Hyde Vineyard comes from a great site in Carneros, in the southern part of the Napa Valley. It has a pure, clean, classy nose of ripe melon and honeyed apples as well as notes of toasted bread and white flowers. It’s not quite as complex as some of the other releases here yet is incredibly pure, balanced, and medium-bodied on the palate, with everything in the right place. It has the balance and freshness to benefit from a year or two in the bottle and should have 7-8 years, if not a decade, of prime drinking.
