Syrah from Afar with a Champagne Flight to start (Long Island, NY), : 10/12 syrahs tasted single blind. Nose has lots of red and black fruit with some meatiness. The color is dark red leaning to purple. On the palate gobs of ripe red raspberry and blackberry with some spiciness – fruit is very primary here without a lot of secondary characteristics coming through. Seems new world and on the very young (actually I thought this was drinking much younger than an ’09). Suspect this will continue to improve with more cellar time – revisit in 2025.

As to the two Syrahs, both are 100% varietal and were mostly destemmed, seeing just 5% whole clusters. The 2019 Syrah Cinematique Larner Vineyard from Ballard Canyon saw mostly neutral barrels, with one-third being new. Its deep purple/ruby color is followed a floral, incredibly pure, medium to full-bodied Syrah offering loads of raspberry and blackberry fruit as well as spring flowers, ground pepper, orange blossom, and hints of bouquet garni. About as seamless and elegant as they come, it’s perfectly balanced, has ripe tannins, no hard edges, and a monster of a finish. This is power and elegance put together brilliantly. Drink it over the coming 7-8 years.

To me this shit was absolutely crazy, an unbelievable wine that reached dizzying levels of complexity and precision while also showing serious depth and richness. As of today, it’s only the 3rd wine out of almost 400 which I’ve given a 97, and the most expensive of the 3 (I really consider QPR in my scoring.) So far, 97 is my highest score- I’m leaving room at the top for now as I really haven’t tried many of the ultra-high-end wines, although QPR will be a factor there too, once I get the chance., Nose started with incredible funk, which I love and cherish in well-made wine before it blows off; musty library style like an old Geueze beer, just super exciting and engaging. Before too long in the decanter (1 hour) the funk decided to hang in the corner and let the rest of the wine take center stage, and it turned out to be a Cirque du Soleil show. Highly varying scents: deep, spiced blueberry/blackberry, mostly very fresh, floral and lifted with nothing overly extracted, rich but balanced allspice and vanilla oak tones, Kirsch, black licorice, new leather, cracked pepper, subtly sweet bacon fat, a kiss of maple, and best of all, a little bit of the funky tone left over from opening. Layered, addictive, and beguiling. It’s not as “explosive” a scent as some other higher-end Syrah examples from generally warm-climate regions, but still extremely expressive, and miles beyond most in terms of genuine complexity., Palate was one of the few that actually met the complexity of the nose, showing gently funky, meaty tones mingling with fireworks of fruit, somehow ranging from very dark (rich blueberry pie) to bright and tart (wild red mulberries). There’s a genuinely amazing amount of acidity here for a 14.5% ABV wine from Santa Ynez, what I would call high acidity, lingering and electric; even more impressive after 10 years of aging. In general feels lower than the listed ABV until you finish most of it by yourself, because wow. By now the tannins are perfect; silky enough to be super-drinkable on its own, but just chalky enough that it stood up beautifully to a prime NY strip. , So, this is still very expensive (I got it for $65, a steal IMO, but nowadays often goes for close to $100.) That said, it’s a genuinely high-end Rhone-like CA syrah in a world where that honor is thrown around too easily. I found myself thinking it was very close to a younger Levet Côte-Rôtie with even more multifaceted and expressive character. Lato included a pinch of Viognier in this one, a good decision, even if we still don’t know what it really does. Truly Cinématique !!
