Craig Phelps –
Bold yet refined, expresses syrah clearly. Leaves you craving for more.
George Naves –
Layered expression of Central Coast with old-world nose, roast beef, blackberry, and spice notes. Drink now as fruit is fading and won’t improve.
Pamela Ramos –
Review: Feminine Syrah with blue fruit and blueberry pie notes. Paired well with kale salad and pancetta/spinach sandwich. Nice.
Robyn Johnson –
Lovely Santa Ynez Syrah, subtle yet enjoyable.
Phillip French –
Balanced with blueberry and floral notes, a hint of smoked meat and earth. Easy to drink with lovely acidity and medium intensity. Nice but not exceptional.
Joyce Kidd –
“Nicely balanced but too big and boozy for my taste. Not my style. Score withheld.”
Maria Walker –
Tasty.
Arthur Schultz –
Too sweet, lacks balance and backbone. Sticky and lacking the cool pepper character of the grape. Not much improvement since release.
Ruben Valenza –
Refined Larner Syrah with smoky cherries, blueberries, and spice on the nose. Balanced mid-palate with charred blueberries and cherries. Persistent, rich, and viscous finish. Pricey, but worth buying again.
Mary Brock –
New world Syrah from Long Island with a sweet taste and hints of cinnamon. Tried it in a tough line-up after a champagne reception.
Linda West –
Syrah from Afar with a Champagne Flight to start (Long Island, NY), : 10/12 syrahs tasted single blind. Nose has lots of red and black fruit with some meatiness. The color is dark red leaning to purple. On the palate gobs of ripe red raspberry and blackberry with some spiciness – fruit is very primary here without a lot of secondary characteristics coming through. Seems new world and on the very young (actually I thought this was drinking much younger than an ’09). Suspect this will continue to improve with more cellar time – revisit in 2025.
Edmund Escobar –
Dark ruby with menthol, smoke, dark fruits, and bacon on the nose. Smooth, full-bodied, and viscous palate with dark fruit flavors. Not as impressive as the 94+ bottle I had on May 6, 2016, but still a solid and excellent wine that comes to life after an hour of opening.
Mary Hardin –
Tight with a meat/pepper element and a nice floral element. Decanted for an hour. Nice – 92+ pts. Touch of heat on the finish.
Daniel Bowler –
“Big and bold Syrah with black raspberries, blue berries, black pepper, and bacon fat. Lush, juicy, supple, and packed with acidity. Impressive and delicious.”
Anna Bandy –
Rich and complex with notes of licorice, dark fruit and a subtle earthiness. Highly enjoyable.
Kirsten Schull –
Top-notch Syrah with blackberry, pepper, cherry, anise, clove, and wet leaves on the nose. Full-bodied with high tannins and acidity, and a long, silky, and spicy finish.
Rita Devereaux –
Larner’s Syrahs are exceptional. Dark fruits, earthy minerals, and java make for a deep garnet experience.
Frederick Evans –
Great depth and complexity, with a perfect drinking window. A blend of Northern Rhone and California. Very nice.
David Turkel –
Nicely aged with room for improvement. Rated at 92/93 with potential for higher.
Michelle Elliot –
Elegant nose with crushed raspberries and sweet licorice. Lush ripe cherry and chocolate fruit on the palate. Slight excesses, but attractive with a smooth and well-grounded structure. Ready to drink with time in hand.
Timothy Jacobson –
Solid Lato-style wine: big and meaty without overdoing it. Tasty, but lacks the complexity of top-tier wines.
Walter Spence –
Impressive slow-oxed wine. Stunning and gorgeous, but slightly preferred the 07 Cinematique. One of the WOTD at an Atlanta Paul Lato Fest.
Kristy Moise –
Rich, deep dark burgundy, full bodied wine, Opened, decanted, and consumed over five hours, Still young, lots of oak and vanilla and all spice off the nose. A little bit gamy, with lots of dark berries being present;, Big and bold, taste follow the nose. Longish finish. This wine is another example of a Lato ‘well-built’ wine. It,s going to get better as it ages, and the oak and vanilla fall away. +2-3pts for sure over the next 3 years or so. Buy a few cases for future drinking. That window will be here soon. Delicious wines.
Brenda Jones –
Clean, smooth syrah with no oak or tannin. Pleasing finish.
Holly Dooley –
Balanced and fruity. Improved with air. Kudos to Paul’s winemaking skills.
Sheri Zeller –
Red fruit and spice on nose and palate. Similar to Paul Lato PNs.
Rogelio Nolen –
Dark fruit-bomb finish with ample tannins. Nose shows bright fruit and bit of cocoa. Best a couple of years ago. From Larner vineyard. Jaffurs also offers superb Syrah.
Louise Meja –
Paul’s Syrah is a winner. It has a slate/mineral essence and is super smooth with a jammy texture. The aftertaste of molasses is simply delightful.
Barbara Capps –
Medium bouquet with faint traditional Syrah elements, but the fruit was a bit thin. Well integrated and balanced. Decant for a few hours and drink now.
Juanita Bell –
Excellent wine with a deeply purple hue, amazing depth, fruit throughout, and a compelling finish. Top tier juice for the big leagues. Winner.
Darcy Doan –
Improved dramatically with Rhone-like Syrah features. Acidity and tannins complement each other with a long, classic finish. Much better than a year ago.
Clint Wilkins –
“Time to drink up. Big Syrah paired with beef tenderloin and swordfish. 2012 Jaffurs from Larner was better.”
Simone Walker –
Sweet with vanilla and blueberry notes, lacking in varietal character. Not for me.
Yanira Mitchell –
“Great potential. Needs aging. Fruity, structured, long finish with notes of lead pencils and ribeye.”
James Cox –
Excellent after 2-hour decant. Wish I had more to age. Willpower needed to let them reach their prime.
Joshua Crisler –
Elegant, dense, and reminiscent of Alban or Sine Qua Non. Artisanal, elegant, and less bold. Impressive and generous, easily drinkable. Very good stuff indeed!
Terri Kimbrough –
Lovely California syrah with kirsch and violet flavors and silky texture.
Jennifer Mccoy –
Inky purple with black raspberries, chocolate, and tobacco on the nose. Juicy acidity. Good intensity. Firm tannins. Riper 11’s.
Rocky Melendy –
Excellent black raspberry wine with ripe nose and palate. Seamless, medium tannins, lush fruit, deep and sweet finish. Good bright acidity.
Thomas Boone –
Hospice du Rhone Grand Tastings featured a rich and ripe black fruit flavor with a medium-plus finish.
Benjamin Hill –
Promising, needs aging. Nice finish.
Tina Pate –
Refined and focused fruit with smoky and earthy notes. Drinkable now, but still a baby. CDP style according to some. 93-94+.
Virginia Roberts –
Floral Syrah, raspberry and white pepper, deep plushness. Youthful, cellar for longer. Drinking nicely.
Alberta Radin –
Bordeaux wine opened with CT group. Needed decanting. Rich ruby color and nose. Palate was velvety and rich, but lacking complexity. Didn’t have time to open to its best. 92++.
Josephine Stiteler –
Expressive nose with black pepper and florals. Medium-full bodied with a deep garnet color. Big, oaky and spicy taste with a long finish. Not the best Syrah in CA due to low acidity. 3 bbl produced.
Shari Brown –
Tannic with fruity notes, smooth finish.
Bonnie Mcdonald –
Well-crafted syrah from a beloved vineyard. Expensive but deserving. Enjoyable now with decanting. Wish it were more affordable. Love Paul Lato wines.
George Winter –
Great wine with notes of blackberry, blueberry, loam, and earth.
Frederick Smith –
Good, herbal syrah with terroir expression, but not great. No rating due to mountain drinking.
Lisa Levingston –
Floral and peppery notes with decent acidity and black fruit. Needs a few years to reach its potential.
Wilma Blakenship –
Vinopia tasting (AG, Stockholm): Excellent, licorice root and berries, soft oak, structured, highly recommended.
Marion Fitzpatrick –
Dark fruits, floral notes, spice, licorice and smoked meats. Good stuff.
Pamela Vancuren –
Highly recommend this $20-30 Aussie Shiraz. Balanced licorice flavor with long finish. Enjoy now or in next 5-10 years.
Lee Williams –
Balanced and delicious.
Tom Long –
Gifted Renotcka this Christmas.
Manuel Rickett –
Dark and bold wine with loads of dark fruit and a hint of Chinese tea. Aged well with many years left. Enjoy with pizza, wings, and ribs.
Patricia Arney –
Magical wine in a bottle.
James Newell –
Approachable wine with gentle tannins and spice notes.
Joseph Maynard –
Enjoyable young Syrah with Pinot Noir-like qualities. Smooth, rich, and pretty with no sharp edges. Best enjoyed now, no need to wait.
Kathleen Prasad –
Well-crafted Syrah with strong nose, roasted meat, coffee, and dark fruit flavors. Has potential to age nicely.
Jose Placha –
Young wine with balanced flavors of graphite, olives, meat, bacon and dark fruit. Integrated oak. Will improve. 92+.
Maggie Vega –
Smooth and elegant Syrah with soft raspberry, blackberry and anise notes. Understated tannins on a long finish. Excellent now, no need to age.
Roy Steinle –
Young and pure with blueberry and raspberry flavors, this wine is a must-try. Great balance and no major heat. It’s destined for greatness and rewards patience.
Cheryl Lhuillier –
Deep and complex California Syrah with blackberry, smoke, tar, mineral, anise, and pepper notes. Drying tannins and long finish. Decant for 2 hours. Great for Syrah lovers and may improve with cellaring.
Carla Hawley –
Decant for an hour, brighter over 3 hours. Drink by 2020, could go longer but may lose greatness. Nice.
Edward Moreno –
Well integrated and balanced with a lovely nose. Superb finish. Decants well after an hour.
Juan Grant –
Paul Lato’s central coast Syrah is stunning and surprisingly subtle. The black currant and cherry fruit is perfectly ripe, and the minerality adds a beautiful freshness. The wine is smooth, balanced, powerful, and subtle all at once.
James Martinez –
Review: MJ’s Syrah is rich with dark plums, smoky flavor, and purple flowers. The palate is well-balanced with acidity, dark fruit, and pepper spice. The wine has nice tannins and will improve with time.
Sandra Davis –
Impressive balance, well-integrated, and a fantastic finish. A hearty wine with notes of black currants and dark fruits. Great value for its price.
Wilbert Gibson –
Epic wine with rich meaty red fruit, well-integrated, pure and without funk. Love it!
Elsie Wilson –
Wow wine. Fabulous nose, balanced, very drinkable.
Oliver Epps –
Serious syrah with a dark, brooding nose of black fruits and earthy minerals. Decanting is recommended.
Kevin Shook –
Last night’s bottle was amazing. Clean and crisp with complexity and depth. Evolved over an hour with flavors of Kalamata olives, jerkied meat, cherry, menthol, and earthy soil. Great with grilled ribeye and lamb chops. Drink up if you have it!
Eugene Auten –
Concentrated and elegant with savory bacon notes and modest fruit. Comparable to Alban. Favorite discovery of the year.
John Fasano –
Elegantly textured and opulent, but requires hours of decanting to truly shine. Bright future ahead.
Judith Harris –
Elegant and complex with black and blue fruit notes. Balanced tannins and acidity lead to a moderate finish. Lucky to have found it for $55.
Walter Gish –
Big, tannic wine that improved over two days of being open. Not overly ripe, could age for five more years.
Leslie Richards –
Exceptional Syrah with exotic aromatics of purple flowers, savory all spice, and Chinese five spice. The palate mimics the nose perfectly, with a balanced and long finish. Worth its weight in gold.
Brandon King –
Lato’s California Syrah is refined and impressive, with intense flavors of black fruit, tar, and sweet licorice. It’s the perfect example of the modern style done right.
Charles Timmins –
Needs time to come together due to excessive oak. Hints of vanilla and blue fruit. Good potential.
Evelyn Stanton –
Not impressive. Needs refinement. Maybe better with time.
Rhonda Bradford –
Day 2 was the charm. Fruit and restrained funk on the nose. Elegant, spicy, complex, yet earthy. Medium-bodied with a long finish. Peak with potential to age.
Barbara Salerno –
New Review: Lato wine is a great surprise. Terroir on the nose, with dark fruit and a touch of smoke. Medium weight, rich dark cherry, and pencil with a touch of grilled meat. 30+ second finish.
Harold Ross –
Elegant, lighter Syrah with spice and some tannins. Accessible now or hold. Pricey for what it is at $75. GOOD.
Christian Stier –
Great wine. Dry with red fruit notes and a wonderful finish. Drinking well now. Curious to see how it evolves.
Scott Daugherty –
Powerful fruit nose, but fading.
JD –
As to the two Syrahs, both are 100% varietal and were mostly destemmed, seeing just 5% whole clusters. The 2019 Syrah Cinematique Larner Vineyard from Ballard Canyon saw mostly neutral barrels, with one-third being new. Its deep purple/ruby color is followed a floral, incredibly pure, medium to full-bodied Syrah offering loads of raspberry and blackberry fruit as well as spring flowers, ground pepper, orange blossom, and hints of bouquet garni. About as seamless and elegant as they come, it’s perfectly balanced, has ripe tannins, no hard edges, and a monster of a finish. This is power and elegance put together brilliantly. Drink it over the coming 7-8 years.
VIN –
The 2019 Syrah Larner Vineyard Cinematique is packed with dark cherry, mocha, plum, lavender and spice, all supported by a good deal of structure that lends energy. The Larner Syrah is a wine of tremendous personality, character and nuance. Give it a few years in bottle to be at its finest.
Lisa Midgette –
2nd favorite in Syrah tasting with Cayuse and Sine Qua Non. Great concentration. Alban was the best.
Margaret Markham –
“Perfect blend of red and black fruits with smoky, spicy bacon notes. Marvelous!”
Mary Rowe –
Drink now. ’12s in cellar. Delicious full-bodied Syrah.
Inez Peer –
New world favorite with rich nose and hidden flavors. Appeals to both old and new world wine lovers. Magnificent.
Jodi Brown –
Rich, round blueberry juice with high-toned fruitiness and a reductive edge; ready to drink without urgency but no regrets if opened now.
Philip Henderson –
Review: Initial flavors of bacon fat, gaminess and fruity notes, but the finish fades quickly. Good pairing with grilled ribeye and onions. Uncertain if it has the structure to age longer. Will wait a few years to decide.
Robert Johnson –
Review: 92+. Coravined glasses, popped the half bottle.
Tyrone Solis –
Beautifully balanced Syrah with a fruit-forward taste. Not too peppery, making it perfect for casual drinking.
Geneva Marshall –
To me this shit was absolutely crazy, an unbelievable wine that reached dizzying levels of complexity and precision while also showing serious depth and richness. As of today, it’s only the 3rd wine out of almost 400 which I’ve given a 97, and the most expensive of the 3 (I really consider QPR in my scoring.) So far, 97 is my highest score- I’m leaving room at the top for now as I really haven’t tried many of the ultra-high-end wines, although QPR will be a factor there too, once I get the chance., Nose started with incredible funk, which I love and cherish in well-made wine before it blows off; musty library style like an old Geueze beer, just super exciting and engaging. Before too long in the decanter (1 hour) the funk decided to hang in the corner and let the rest of the wine take center stage, and it turned out to be a Cirque du Soleil show. Highly varying scents: deep, spiced blueberry/blackberry, mostly very fresh, floral and lifted with nothing overly extracted, rich but balanced allspice and vanilla oak tones, Kirsch, black licorice, new leather, cracked pepper, subtly sweet bacon fat, a kiss of maple, and best of all, a little bit of the funky tone left over from opening. Layered, addictive, and beguiling. It’s not as “explosive” a scent as some other higher-end Syrah examples from generally warm-climate regions, but still extremely expressive, and miles beyond most in terms of genuine complexity., Palate was one of the few that actually met the complexity of the nose, showing gently funky, meaty tones mingling with fireworks of fruit, somehow ranging from very dark (rich blueberry pie) to bright and tart (wild red mulberries). There’s a genuinely amazing amount of acidity here for a 14.5% ABV wine from Santa Ynez, what I would call high acidity, lingering and electric; even more impressive after 10 years of aging. In general feels lower than the listed ABV until you finish most of it by yourself, because wow. By now the tannins are perfect; silky enough to be super-drinkable on its own, but just chalky enough that it stood up beautifully to a prime NY strip. , So, this is still very expensive (I got it for $65, a steal IMO, but nowadays often goes for close to $100.) That said, it’s a genuinely high-end Rhone-like CA syrah in a world where that honor is thrown around too easily. I found myself thinking it was very close to a younger Levet Côte-Rôtie with even more multifaceted and expressive character. Lato included a pinch of Viognier in this one, a good decision, even if we still don’t know what it really does. Truly Cinématique !!
Leah Harstad –
Balanced with dark fruit profile, complemented by smoke, spice, and licorice. Delicious.
Suzanne Warren –
Intense Larner Syrah filtered through Paul Lato’s lens. Not ready yet, but worth waiting for 6 years.
Jessica Scott –
Elegant and restrained with perfumed mix of black fruits, anise, smoke minerals and herbs. Pure and fresh flavors. A very pretty wine.
Matthew Branz –
Balanced with black cherry, raspberry, and baking spices, this wine has sweet tannins and earthy undertones.
Tracey Hoskins –
Dark red with black fruits, sweet kirsch liquor, bacon, raspberry, red apple skins, white pepper, toasted oak, and a velvety mouthfeel. Beat previous bottles. PnP, but better with 1 hr of air over 3 hrs. Very good.
