Chateau Haut Bages Liberal Pauillac Bordeaux 2015 is a captivating expression of the historic terroir it originates from. Crafted under the expert hands of winemaker Claire Villars Lurton, this wine embodies the elegance and complexity of its esteemed Pauillac appellation. Claire’s approach, focusing on biodynamic practices, enhances the wine’s natural qualities, bringing out a depth and purity that’s both remarkable and distinctive.

The 2015 vintage shines brightly with a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, meticulously aged for 16 months in a combination of 40% new oak and 60% one-year-old barrels. This careful ageing process imparts a nuanced complexity to the wine, balancing the vibrant fruit flavors with a sophisticated woody undertone.

Upon first glance, the wine captivates with its deep, inviting color—a rich tapestry of crimson and deep purple hues, promising an intense sensory experience. The aroma is a lush bouquet of red and black fruits, with raspberry and blackcurrant notes at the forefront, delicately intertwined with a fresh hint of mint. This aromatic complexity heralds the exceptional quality and character of Château Haut-Bages Libéral.

The taste is an exquisite journey, starting with a sumptuous and precise entry that reveals the wine’s silky and unctuous mouthfeel. The palate is a harmonious blend of the initial fruit aromas complemented by subtle, spicy oak influences. Tasting notes from acclaimed critics highlight the wine’s generosity and firm structure, featuring a dense core surrounded by layers of blackberry and black-currant fruit, leading to a clean, crisp finish.

Critical acclaims for this wine are noteworthy, with scores like 94 points from Wine Enthusiast, praising its structured elegance and promising future. Decanter and Jeb Dunnuck admire its depth and classic Pauillac characteristics, noting its potential to evolve beautifully over time. James Suckling and Vinous commend its rich tannins and fruit intensity, while Jancis Robinson appreciates its bright crimson appearance and lifted nose, hinting at sophistication and lusciousness.

This is one of the three biodynamic estates that are owned by Gonzague and Claire Lurton. The wine is generous while also firmly structured in the style of this property. A dense, dry core surrounded by blackberry and black-currant fruit promises great things. It finishes clean, clear and crisp.

Soft, smooth, deep fruit on the nose, with the oak being used to good effect. There's a flush of intensity to the black fruits - this is a wine for those who like cassis, cedar and liquorice, all delivered with a punch. It will need time to soften, but this is a good showing from Haut Bages Libérale. In biodynamic conversion. 40% new oak.

    Jeb Dunnuck
The 2015 Château Haut-Bages Libéral (65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot brought up in 40% new oak) is an outstanding Pauillac that offers a little old-school vibe in its firm, focused, medium-bodied style and black fruits, earth, graphite and underbrush-driven aromas and flavors. It has impressive purity, integrated acidity, and notable tannin, and should be loved by classic Claret lovers. Give bottles 4-5 years and drink over the following 15.

Plenty of spicy, savory oak influence comes to the fore above a vibrant array of cassis, blackberries and plums. The palate has rich and powerful tannins that roll sturdy and long, carrying plenty of deep cherry and plum flavors. Filled out nicely, but still more to come.

The 2015 Haut-Bages Libéral is a bold, direct wine with lovely fruit intensity, good structure and fine overall balance. Today, the 2015 is quite closed in on itself, but there is good depth and persistence through the mid-palate and into the finish. It will be interesting to see if the 2015 acquires a bit more nuance and finesse over the coming years.

Bright crimson. Lifted and quite intense on the nose. Sweet and polished with a bit of inky pencil shavings on the end. Some lusciousness.
