Wine Description

Giant Steps Pinot Noir 2021 is a delightful result of the challenging growing season of the Yarra Valley. Thanks to the extended slowripening period, the white pepper, Earl Grey tea, cherry and raspberry notes of this wine have been intensified. Winemaker Mel Chester has created an elegant yet highly crowdpleasing blend of 60/40 Upper/Lower Yarra Valley vineyards that have been carefully handpicked and openfermented, with 60% of the grapes kept as whole berries, giving Giant Steps Pinot Noir 2021 a unique character.

This wine begins with a spicy and chocolaty aroma with a subtle hint of red and dark berries, combined with dried herbs and orange jam. Upon tasting, a mediumbodied and silky flavor is revealed, stemming from its supple tannins, and ending in a vibrant and juicy fruit finish. Giant Steps Pinot Noir 2021 showcases the influence of climatic conditions, with its wellrounded complexity of flavors that is depicted with the use of these unique vineyards.

Overall, this wine is an excellent quality Pinot Noir from the Yarra Valley, with a long finish that could easily age from now until 2034 with proper cellaring.

  1. Samuel Mclaughlin

Straightforward Pinot with cherry aroma and taste.

  2. Richard Jaime

Smooth, rich Pinot with good fruit weight.

  3. Carla Chean

Smooth, rich pinot with potential for aging. Lacks the ethereal quality of great pinots. Label is impressive.

  4. Jeffery Heinsohn

Bright ruby red color with pink edges. Intense nose of red fruits, florals, and spices. Palate with good intensity and some sweetness. Overall, a lovely feminine Pinot.

  5. Faye Revilla

Drinkable, needs aging for a year.

  6. Margaret Pasley

Intensely flavored wine with a surprisingly mature taste. Soft with good acidity, great for pairing with food. Giant Steps LDR Pinot/Syrah blend is also worth trying. Follow this winery.

  7. Mary Collyer

Impeccably balanced with a feminine feel. Delicate handling of whole bunch percentage adds depth. Young and exciting. Drink now or later without regrets.

  8. Donna Cage

Pinot Challenge: 86. RMWA: 93 for RMWA, 87 for applejack. Floral nose, fruity taste, slightly acidic. Good with cheddar, salami, meat & olive pasta.

  9. Carlos Gomez

New releases from Giant Steps and Yeringberg at Prince Wine Store South Melbourne are warmer, riper, and more approachable.

  10. Brenda Randrup

Fresh, light red with a lovely nose of red fruit, flowers, and underwood. Good acidity and a pretty finish.

  11. Geraldine Lopez

Red berry bouquet with herbal and earthy notes. Layered palate with impressive power. Similar to 2012 Jackson Estate Vintage Widow and Cayuse style. Stelvin enclosure. Let it breathe. 91-92.

  12. Mary Hendon

Light and approachable drink-now Pinot with red fruit and spice, but nothing extraordinary.

  13. Mark Woolridge

Rustic Pinot with smoky notes and moderate strength but lacking in Pinot fruit. Some development, medium length.

  14. Olga Spencer

Fantastic pinot, drink now or in a year. Amazing fruit flavor.

  15. Roy Hill

Review: This wine lacks complexity and is overrated. The palate is better than the aroma, but it’s still not great. It’s okay as a table wine.

  16. Vernita Gahan

Pale and balanced aromas and flavors. Pleasant but simple.

  17. Eileen Elliott

Plum Market Luxury Tasting at Bad Hunter, Chicago: Ripe, minty with good weight and faintly sweet finish. Better than 2018.

  18. Victor Le

Balanced and elegant with notes of beetroot, strawberry, cherry, and black tea. Light-bodied with good acidity and a nice finish.

  19. Charles Pitts

Enjoyable Australian Pinot, but lacks complexity in fruit flavors. No rush to finish the bottle.

  20. Noreen Harley

Incomplete review. Needs more details to provide an accurate answer.

  21. Doreen Strobel

Strong Pinot Noir with heavy tannins and a hint of strawberry aroma.

  22. Emily Lowe

Light and perfumed with raspberry and cherry notes, but alcohol is too strong and not well integrated. Starts plain but develops into typical berry flavors. Potential for aging, recommend resting for at least one year.

  23. Stephen Salvas

Decent wine with cranberry and cherry jam aroma, medium body, and a medium finish. Could use more complexity. Drink now.

  24. Aileen Crowell

Surprisingly elegant and delicate wine with earthy aroma and touch of spritz. Could easily be mistaken for a Burgundian.

  25. Jesus Zucker

Excellent value wine with luscious, dense raspberry and black cherry fruit, balanced acidity and silky tannins, and savory notes of loamy quality, orange peel, rose petal, smoky oak, and white pepper finish.

  26. John Weeden

Improved on day two with crunchy acidity and juicy red fruit, but fairly generic beetroot and stemmy.

  27. Marian Brookes

Notes of sweet cherries and raspberries with a touch of white pepper and warm spice. Comparable to a New Zealand Pinot.

  28. Bryan Morrison

Earth, mineral, sour cherry, mushroom notes. Medium length. Benefits from decanting.

  29. Jay Villanueva

    Excellent bottle, drinking perfectly now.

  30. Dale Stockwell

Pinot on par with good Burgundy. Lovely nose with berry and vanilla notes. Precise and easy to drink. Best for Burgundy lovers. Enjoy now or in the next 3-5 years.

  31. Louis Balk

Intense and fresh with red fruit, underbrush, sage, and spices. Great value and a new experience for me in terms of Australian PNs.

  32. Mark Wright

New world nose, fresh red fruits, sweet spices, and earthy notes. Elegant, rich, and medium-bodied palate with a clean and simple finish. Ready to drink now and can be kept for a few more years.

  33. David Kezar

Well-made with ripe fruit flavors of strawberry and rhubarb, supported by cinnamon and allspice notes. Acidity is balanced. Not my preferred style of Pinot Noir, but will appeal to some.

  34. Dorothy Perdue

A$28 wine with hints of pepper, tart cherries, and meaty oak. Brightly acidic with gritty tannins and a piquant cherry fruit finish. Good for a few years.

  35. Dennis Jessup

Juicy fruit with black plums, berries and sweet spice, slightly meaty underpin. Tight tannic burr, a little too much and flat.

  36. Carroll Phillips

Pale ruby with a gorgeous rose petal and powdered matcha nose. Juicy pomegranate reigns, along with raspberry jolly rancher, green tea, orange juice, and sandalwood. A clean finale with light echoes of green tea, making it a fun, lip-smacking wine. Drink now-2028. 93.

  37. Lisa Jones

Fruity with forest floor notes. Nice wine.

  38. Gilbert Howard

Young and fruity pinot with cherry and raspberry flavors. Back end has a hint of candied flavor. Great for light and fruit-forward cravings.

  39. Anthony Ellis

Velvety body with robust tannins and a long finish of raspberry, spice, and bitter chocolate.

  40. Hilario Jackson

Light wine with prominent strawberry notes and subtle oak undertones. Pleasant.

  41. Eddie Buchholz

Aged well. Sweet berry taste lingers. Great value.

  42. Kathleen Demetriou

Bright garnet colour with red fruit notes, oak and forest floor. Rush of red fruits with mushrooms and orange peels. Well balanced with a long finish. Loved it.

  43. Mary Juneau

Lively and crisp with interesting finish, fruit is subdued.

  44. Dawn Lozano

Review: Giant Steps Single Vineyard Pinot Noir – Clear, pale ruby color, with aromas of red cherries, raspberries, and pomegranate. Dry, high acidity, medium alcohol, low tannins, and medium flavor intensity. Tangy, refreshing finish with a hint of forest floor. Excellent quality and value for a young Pinot Noir. Can develop over the next 5 years.

  45. William Suber

Fresh Pinot Noir at Bistro Moncur, Sydney. Red berries, floral notes, juicy with a slight sour note. Flour textured tannins.

  46. Barbra Pezzuti

“Pleasurable Australian pinot with ripe strawberries and vanilla oak notes. Clean acidity, but lacks forest floor or bramble.”

  47. Lola Duckett

Sorry, there is no review provided for me to rewrite. Please provide the existing review so I can assist you better.

  48. Russell Abbott

Tart with tight tannins, gamey and slightly meaty with pretty jubey fruit lozenge underpin. Not showing well today.

  49. Blair Haynes

Dominant elderflower aroma with hints of earth and red fruit nuances. Medium acidity and tannins, with a strong but not overpowering taste. Lengthy floral finish, although lacking in fruitiness.

  50. Norman Dominguez

Clean, fresh, and red strawberry flavors.

  51. Michael Menard

Light-bodied with sweet red fruit, dried cherry, and a hint of smoke. High acidity and a medium to long finish make this fresh wine perfect for young consumption.

  52. Erma Stribling

Review: Light ruby color, ripe cherry aroma, low tannin, medium acidity, one-dimensional.

  53. Jose Faux

Great value, better than single vineyard options.

  54. Andrew Grosso

Kate’s wine bar offers a light wine that is perfect for those who love a refreshing and subtle taste.

  55. Nan Brock

Excellent pinot, balanced with good fruit.

  56. Paul Hayman

Delicious Yarra Valley Pinot with fresh strawberry and mulling spices. Youthful, but drinks beautifully and at a decent price.

  57. Alfred Stoglin

PnD let air for 1hr. Medium ruby. Aroma of cherry rhubarb yogurt green tea thyme and strawberry leaf. Dry, medium body, cherry rhubarb strawberry thyme and green tea flavors. Very good. Suitable for further ageing.

  58. Jacquetta Davis

Simple and easy to drink with notes of dark cherry, raspberry, and strawberry. Lacks depth and character and isn’t comparable to single vineyard wines.

  59. Eric Mckean

Light red color, cherry, strawberry, floral, and oak flavors. Earthy on the palate. Interesting and enjoyable Pinot.

  60. Eugene Frohman

Pale with red cherry, rhubarb, and Nibs aromas. Medium tannin and refreshing finish. Pinot has a nice expression, drinkable for 5 years.

  61. Rodney Tovar

Pinot Noir: Pleasant fig, pomegranate, red pear fruit with spice and earth depth. Round, generous and refined. 3/5/23.

  62. Jeffery Dominguez

Good, but not quite up to par with previous years. A bit too herbaceous with green, unripe berries and relatively high acidity.

  63. Edwin Ryan

Consistent nose and palate of ripe strawberries and vanilla oak. Lacks complexity but has a cleansing acidity.

  64. Richard Johnson

Great wine with a bouquet of cranberry, cherry, and currant. The finish is filled with red fruit flavors. Don’t understand the negative comments. Similar to New Zealand wine.

  65. Rosemary Vincent

Quaffable red wine with notes of red fruits.

  66. Jeffrey Jamili

Vintage has lifted notes of cranberry, wild raspberry, raspberry leaf, rosehip red florals, spices, and graphite. Sneaky tannin on the palate with a careful layering of detail and real structure without distracting from the immediate joy of the fruit expression.

  67. Linda Crowe

Lively cranberry, raspberry, floral and spice notes with a subtle tannin on the palate. Great structure without overwhelming the fruit.

  68. Karla Mccalpane

    Excellent! Fruity and flavorful.

  69. Todd Nava

Wine not up to par with Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list. No faults, but disappointing compared to other wines tasted recently. Guests thought it was okay. Drinking the Rainbow can be a rough road.

  70. Julia Welter

New world Pinot at its peak, with hints of Central European spices and fruity compote. A steal for its price.

  71. Gertrude Tuttle

Light wine with smokey nose and palate. Improved after 15 mins.

  72. Connie Bryant

Rating improved. Still herbaceous, good acidity. Fresh, crisp, easy to drink. Pinot notes in aroma, slim, cool-climate pinot in mouth. Great for terrace, fish or veal.

  73. Diane Poarch

Sweet nose, savory palate, light tannin, bit of heat on finish. Not my style, but not bad.

  74. Terri Schwartz

Bright garnet color with fresh red cherry and red berries aromas and flavors, hint of bergamot and sweet baking spices. Notes of pepper spice and caramel on a medium finish. Medium-bodied, fresh, juicy, and vibrant. Unique expression of Pinot Noir. Easy drinker.

  75. Beth Stodden

Pale ruby with violet, strawberry, and red cherry notes. Herbaceous with a touch of vanilla and oak. Hints of leather, mushroom, and cooked fruit. Low tannin, high acid, medium alcohol and body, long finish.

  76. WS

Stunning, with terrific focus and intensity to the core of Earl Grey tea, firm, juicy cherry, raspberry and white pepper flavors. Notes of clove and green cardamom linger on the finish, with a touch of salted caramel. Drink now through 2034.

  77. WE

Small but mighty describes the 2021 vintage in Victoria. This may be Giant Step’s more affordable Pinot from a multi-vineyard blend, but it’s as delicious and delightful as the single-vineyard stuff. Fleshy primary cherries and strawberries are underpinned by white spice, vanilla bean and soft florals, with a mineral core. The palate is crunchy and vibrant, with a silky lusciousness, purity of fruit and a long finish. Elegant but also highly crowd-pleasing, the wine has a tannin structure that means it could age gracefully through 2028 to 2030.

  78. JS

This shows a spicy and chocolaty character with an array of ripe red and dark berries, dried herbs and orange jam. Medium-bodied and silky with dusty tannins and vibrant, juicy fruit flavors that lead to a supple, savory finish. Drink now.

Pinot Noir grapes exhibit a distinct elegance. Their thin skins and tightly clustered berries make them susceptible to disease and challenging to cultivate. However, the rewards of this persnickety grape are extraordinary. Pinot Noir wines possess a remarkable flavor profile, often described as silky, with vibrant acidity, delicate tannins, and an array of aromas. Expect to encounter red fruit notes like cherry and raspberry, accompanied by earthy undertones, floral hints, and sometimes a touch of spice. Renowned regions such as Burgundy in France, the Willamette Valley in Oregon, and California's Sonoma County have become synonymous with exceptional Pinot Noir production. Each region brings its own terroir and climate, contributing to the wine's character. Burgundy, for instance,... Read More
