Blackberry, blueberry, chocolate and peppermint. Iodine, too. It’s full-bodied and chewy with beautiful focus and intensity. Firm and velvety tannins. Really excellent structure here. This is a wine for the cellar. Try after 2023.

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Stone is full-bodied, ripe and suave, offering damson skin, black cherry and a liberal lick of oak-derived vanilla. It's a modern, impressive expression that's stylish and polished, delivering fresh acidity and refined, stony tannins that lightly coat the palate. The lengthy finish is filled with a damson-like fragrance.

Well worth discovering, the finely crafted 2018 vintage (5*) was estate-grown in the Gimblett Gravels and matured for nearly two years in French oak barriques (55 per cent new). Deeply coloured, it is fragrant and full-bodied, with rich, ripe blackcurrant, plum, spice and nut flavours, and refined, supple tannins. A concentrated, intensely varietal and highly approachable red, it's already delicious.

    Hawke's Bay

History: Hawke's Bay stands proud as one of New Zealand's most venerable wine regions. Its viticultural lineage can be traced back to 1851 when the first vineyards were established by missionaries aiming to produce sacramental wines. Remarkably, its first commercial wine sale was chronicled in 1870. As the decades unfurled, the 1920s saw a burgeoning wine industry, with iconic wineries like Te Mata, Mission Estate, and Church Road cementing their presence, many of which continue to thrive today.
