Don Melchor Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 showcases deep violet in color, intense, and with great aromatic complexity of red fruits together with floral notes of violets and roses. On the palate, it is a tasty wine with a soft spell and superb freshness, along with the elegance and power so characteristic of Puente Alto. It is a wine with a velvety texture, lush body, and a very long and persistent finish.

Vineyard Notes: Located at the foot of the Andes Mountains, the Don Melchor Vineyard is located on the north bank of the Maipo River at 650 meters above sea level. The vineyard is
127 hectares, comprising 90 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon, 7.1% of Cabernet Franc, 1.9% of Merlot, and 1% of Petit Verdot. The average age of the old vineyard is over 30 years old.

    1. Darrell Quigley

Short and concise: James Suckling’s review.

    2. Paul Chilcutt

      Exceptional.

    3. Justin Nolting

This wine is a perfect balance between Bordeaux and Napa Valley. It has a lovely nose of flowers, graphite, mixed berries, and a hint of spice. Silky, elegant, and youthful flavors of dark currants, blackberry, blueberry, cassis, mint, and herbs. It pairs well with carne asada tacos.

    4. Lorraine Goodrich

Impressive young wine with eucalyptus, menthol, pepper, and vanilla on the nose. Beautiful blueberry, kirsch, and blackberry flavors with hints of seaweed and spices. Smooth and well-made, it gets better with time. Best young Melchor I’ve had. Will age well.

    5. Tania Davidson

Silky, complex, and perfect. This single vineyard gem rivals pricey California Cabs. Monumental!

    6. Diane Swanson

Excellent wine, deserving of a perfect score.

    7. Thomas King

Needs aging. Too acidic on finish, detracts from overall experience.

    8. Thomas Deen

      Aromas: flowers, blackcurrants, raspberries, peaches.

    9. Catherine Tibbs

This wine lacks character and feels manufactured for critics. It’s smooth and balanced, but lacks uniqueness. It’s hard to distinguish between South American wines. While enjoyable, it doesn’t compare to a superior wine like Pontet Canet 2016.

    10. Patricia Marusarz

Blackberry, oak, licorice, hint of caramel. Well-made wine without any disagreement, but it makes me wonder if it deserves this score. Maybe the wine I bought wasn’t well stored.

    11. Elaine Marquardt

Initial disappointment turned into pleasant surprise. After a day of air, intense red fruit, acidity, and moderate depth emerged. Competes with the ’10 and ’12 vintages, but in a unique manner. Recommend aging for a few years.

    12. Lorie Fischer

Deep purple hue. Aromas of gasoline, black fruit, and cedar. Tastes of asphalt, blackberry, and oak. Full-bodied with a touch of tannins. Enjoyable, but lacks the wow factor.

    13. Mara Stancil

Intense ruby color. Aromas of blackberry, pomegranate, oregano, and black pepper. Smooth, dry palate with lingering acidity. Earthy and well-built. Improved with time.

    14. Stacey Williams

Overripe nose, eucalyptus notes, medium body, fine tannins, improved with air. Medium+ finish. Give it a few years.

    15. Robert Travis

Powerful, yet soft tannins highlight this great wine, bursting with red fruit flavors.

    16. John Croft

Vibrant ruby hue. Aromas of black and red berries, licorice, oak, with a touch of menthol. Dry, balanced, soft acidity, integrated tannins. Medium full body, medium finish.

    17. Jorge Hatley

Vibrant ruby with red plum, cherry, blackberry, dried fruits, hints of bell pepper and eucalyptus. Dry, medium acidity, high alcohol, ripe tannins, and a satisfying finish. Excellent wine.

    18. Deborah Crape

Outstanding Cab Sav. Powerful yet velvety tannins. Perfect balance. Delightful taste.

    19. Norma Senteno

Delicious wine, best after 60-minute decant.

    20. Gussie Hunt

      Exceptional!

    21. Kiley Geter

Excellent wine, slightly young. High acidity, Chilean nose of green bramble and dark earth. Dark ruby color, sour cherry, raspberry, black plums, leather, vanilla, and spice from the barrel. Requires aging, pleasant long finish.

    22. Autumn Scroggins

      Corvin: Excellent choice.

    23. Johnny Sylvester

Decant for 2+ hours, engineered but pleasant.

    24. Maxwell Reynolds

      Gorgeous wine. Love it.

    25. William Santos

    26. Janice David

Fresh black fruits, mineral, black currant, and graphite on the nose. Medium+ acidity, high tannin. Velvety tannin, long finish. Youthful.

    27. Robert Hamed

      Requires aging before enjoyment.

    28. Jose Cleveland

Promisingly potent wine. Requires 10-15 years to harmonize. NR for now, but immense potential awaits!

    29. Bradley Murphy

Decant for 5 hours. Addictive nose with chocolate, berries, mint, and more. Endless, layered finish. Full-bodied and elegant. Stylish and unctuous. One of the world’s greatest Cabs. My favorite. Drink from 2025.

    30. Willie Hagan

This wine boasts a complex blend of menthol, graphite, cassis, black cherry, vanilla, chocolate, violets, sweet tobacco, white pepper, and hints of orange zest.

    31. Elvia Richter

Smooth, elegant, and very typical Cabernet Sauvignon. Flavors of blueberries, blackberries, and black cherries. Medium to full body. Not awe-inspiring, but wonderful. Still young. Good purchase.

    32. Donna Cheek

Decadent. Intense start, lingering finale. Decant required.

    33. Jeremy Hawley

Decanted for 4 hours, this wine impresses with notes of berries, mocha, and mint. Pour reveals black cherry, currants, and a hint of smoke. Enjoyable for 5-10 years.

    34. Harold Gualtieri

Overpriced. Mellow. 3-hour decant. Not noteworthy.

    35. Wendy Shirley

      Delicate, but revealing.

Inviting aromas of chocolate-covered cherry, dried rose petal and petrichor set the stage for this well-structured red, which balances concentrated berry and mission fig flavors against vibrant acidity, lending a lush, mouthwatering quality to a finish that swirls with cassis, spices and fine tannins. Full bodied, this classic Cabernet Sauvignon displays ripe red-plum aromas followed by oak spice. It has a very fine balance on the palate between ripe fruit and good acidity that will keep this fresh as it evolves. Oak flavors are a bit intense but still pleasant providing notes of chocolate in the supple finish.

Packed full of vibrant fruit, plum, blackberry and tar. Exceptional concentration of fruit and sophisticated tannins. Oak and spice but lots of juicy curranty fruit.

    James Suckling
Deep and serious with black olives, blackberries, blueberries, tobacco leaf, sweet red capsicum, ash, dried meat and a hint of black chocolate. This is a more direct, full-bodied Don Melchor, filled with solid blackberries and wrapped by tight, fine-grained tannins. Long and deep. 92% cabernet sauvignon, 6% cabernet franc, 1% merlot and 1% petit verdot. Better after 2024.

Rich, dense, black fruit and volcanic rockiness on the nose. The palate is dense and structured. Firm, acid backbone, high tannin with a crushed-velvet quality, rich black cherry and cocoa with just a whisper of vanilla and spice hiding behind a sheer wall of fruit. Well balanced but would benefit from about four more years before touching it.
