Wine Description
Boars’ View ‘The Coast’ Pinot Noir 2018, crafted by the esteemed winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown, is a remarkable expression of the Sonoma Coast appellation. In this vintage, nature cooperated to create a wine that captivates with its intricate flavors and impeccable structure. The wine is made from 100% Pinot Noir sourced from Boars’ View Vineyard near Cazadero, and it showcases a blend of Calera, Mt. Eden, and Swan clones.
The wine presents itself in the glass with a deep, garnet color that alludes to its richness. On the nose, aromas of cranberry compote, sandalwood, and lavender gracefully waft, enticing the senses with their complexity. As you delve into the palate, layers upon layers of flavors unfold. The dense texture carries flavors of black cherry, nutmeg, quince, plum paste, and lilac, creating a symphony of taste. The indulgent fruit quality is beautifully balanced by a mouth-watering acidity that draws out the wine’s extended floral finish.
The 2018 vintage was a winemaker’s dream, characterized by warm days without extreme heat spikes, allowing for even development of sugars in the grapes. The ample yields provided the opportunity for crop thinning and cluster selection, resulting in true and complete ripeness. The balance of crop load to vine vigor ensured optimal quality.
Renowned wine critic Jeb Dunnuck awarded this wine an impressive 95 points. The Pinot Noir The Coast underwent complete destemming and spent 10 months maturing in a combination of François Frares, Remond, and Gauthier French oak barrels, with 50% new oak. This meticulous winemaking process shines through in the wine’s bouquet of sweet black raspberry fruits, baking spices, forest floor, licorice, and earthy undertones. With its full-bodied richness, harmonious acidity, and an excellent finish, this vintage surpasses its predecessors, promising enjoyment for the next 10-12 years.

Edith Zendejas –
Velvety pinot with ripe cherries and a touch of quirsch. Deliciously huge after the kutch.
Janice Connors –
Ripe black fruit aroma with new oak. Forward fruit flavor with a hollow mid.
John Lewis –
Intensely perfect Pinot.
Paula Mendez –
Schrader Wine Dinner at Spago Beverly Hills: Rich, big and wonderful Pinot.
Christa Johnson –
Luscious, fresh and seductive, this wine boasts sweet cherries, spice and a juicy, ripe red berry finish.
Robin Deakins –
Review: The Schrader wine didn’t hold up against the competition and was the only one I didn’t mind pouring out.
William Hindle –
Over-extracted and disappointing given the price and label. Dense dark fruit notes in Kong Hans BYO Pinot and Chardonnay.
Stacy Norman –
Wine lacks typicity, has a bitter finish, but has a good nose and mid-palate with dark fruits.
Olive Sultan –
Decanted for an hour. Crushed ripe blueberries and cherries on the nose. Loads of overripe fruit, not your typical Pinot Noir.
Christopher Wadsworth –
Intense pinot with spicy oak, cherry, blueberry, and blackberry flavors. Lovely brute.
Iris Goldberger –
“Great Pinot with lasting pleasure to drink despite forest floor/funk flavor.”
Sarah Speedy –
Solid pinot, California style. Not for those who dislike the taste.
Albert Ackerman –
Lush cherry and spice nose. Fruity explosion with a long finish. Very good wine.
Matthew Hor –
8 hours open, 2.5 hours decanted, off the charts.
Donald Voris –
Raspberries, cherries, leather, and a touch of mint. Needs aging. Long, smooth finish with cherry notes.
Dennis Coffey –
Balanced and lively with lots of fruit and fantastic texture. Perfect for aging.
Joseph Landers –
Showing very nicely right now. With enough decant time this wine sings and has a long finish. It has great mouthfeel and plenty of appreciable berry. Very nice stuff. Puts Russian River dreck to shame.
Jose Cooper –
Opaque medium-dark red with crushed dark berries and a bit of baking spice on the nose. Palate presents an extracted bruiser with minerality and spice.
Denise Brown –
Great medium-bodied Pinot for Cab lovers. Perfect with charcuterie and cheese.
Katie Mullins –
Tightly wound and young with earthy notes and subtle raspberry. Needs 5 years to improve.
David Traylor –
Great wine, but not typical Pinot. More like Syrah. Not surprised as it’s my second bottle.
Gloria Schmidt –
Good Pinot, but overpriced for its flavor profile. Decant for an hour, light aroma of cherry, earth and cola. Medium body with a continuous acidity streak. Goes well with soft cheeses. Not complex, but still enjoyable.
Christopher Dunn –
Maria enjoyed the wine, consistent with notes from 7/28/2016.
Vernon Norman –
Great for fans of cabernet and pinot.
Charles Wyatt –
Big pinot noir, not a great value. Enjoyable as a red wine.
Barbara Wallace –
Silky red fruit Pinot with earthy minerality. Delicious.
Aide Dockery –
Excellent!
Andrew Hamilton –
Intense strawberry and cherry dominate the palate, with nice acidity and structure. Expect a long life from this Schrader Pinot.
Gary Unterreiner –
Modern and solid Pinot Noir. Fruit-forward with a backbone of tannin and great acidity. Age for 5-10 years before opening.
Corey Simms –
Simple Sonoma Pinot, not memorable for the price. Lowered score after two-day consumption.
Stephanie Turnage –
Outstanding big Pinot with cherries and red fruit on the nose, and an earthy finish.
Andrew Kurtz –
Overpriced and lacks complexity. Too much alcohol, not enough subtlety or interest.
Ann Neumaier –
Fantastic pinot, concentrated fruit, balanced, long finish. Great effort!
Glenn Mcginnis –
Alcohol noticeable, consistent with previous notes.
Lou Panora –
Well-balanced with refined fruit extraction and spicy undertones. Impressive!
Melissa Sanford –
Perfectly paired with grilled salmon, this delicious pinot boasts ripe fruit and a velvety texture that’s well balanced.
Thaddeus Broussard –
My wife thought it was a Cabernet (first Sauvignon, then Franc, with “good bones”) while I would’ve pegged it for a Syrah. I’ve got no issues with this wine’s atipicity, but there’s really not much to it other than a welcoming buzz… Undoubtedly the most overpriced bottle of wine I’ve ever purchased, thus. Could’ve used more new oak, which is something I’ve never uttered before. 14.5% stated ABV.
Victoria Singleton –
Cherry fruit dominates with background flavors of wet leaf underbrush, mushroom, and sage. High acidity makes it worth aging but slightly unbalanced now. Keep it for a few years.
William Spencer –
“Maria enjoyed this pop and pour wine with consistent notes from 2016.”
Carmen Reynolds –
Pleasing but not complex. Not a typical pinot, big in style, yet integrated. Would drink again but not worth the price.
James Lau –
Consistently elegant Pinot Noir with a Schrader stamp. Similar to Oregon’s Beaux Freres, and a personal favorite. Ready to drink upon opening. TRB!
John Corwin –
Decent showing for a CA Pinot, but not a great QPR.
Kevin Boggio –
Fantastic wine. Needs to be aired and decanted for best results. Rich flavor of plum with a lasting finish.
Erika Dressler –
Average Pinot Noir, not worth the high price.
Cherri Legace –
Full-bodied Pinot with velvety texture, raspberry, cherry, and spice notes. Medium finish and nicely balanced.
Elizabeth Brooks –
Disappointing wine, not worth the price.
Richard Starke –
The wine is overdone, almost losing its varietal character. It’s a Pinot for Cab drinkers, lacking purity of fruit, with intense and disjointed elements. Disappointing to drink.
Jacob Ostroski –
Light color, light red fruits, bright cherries, light palate, fair bit of alcohol.
Jennifer Taylor –
Good, but overpriced compared to similar RRV PNs.
Cody Bjornson –
Pleasing Pinot noir with solid aromatics and generous fruit on the palate. Medium body, but short finish. Plateau for several more years. Rated 92-93 but not worth the price.
Henry Kilcoyne –
Excellent.
Cynthia Donohue –
Review: CBCC Gov Trophy winner- Solid & modern Pinot Noir, fruit forward with blackberry, strawberry & raspberry flavors, balanced finish. Drink now or age for 5-10 years.
John Combs –
Wine remains strong as per 4/3/2020 notes.
Jennifer Coffee –
Nice nose with dark fruit, but too intense and alcoholic for my preference.
Robert Oneal –
Great wine, decant for best results.
Barb Griffis –
Bold and flamboyant with a guilty pleasure aspect. Has a broad appeal but lacks complexity with aging.
Virginia Stumpe –
Decent Cab, but not outstanding.
Michael Tarr –
Cab lovers Pinot! Not my fave Pinot but it has its place.
Bradley Lane –
Ripe, expressive sour cherry fruit, unusually concentrated for a Pinot Noir with a finish that goes on for a minute. Silky smooth tannins after a 30 minute decant. I tend to enjoy big, concentrated wines and this is a bullseye.
Mildred Baker –
Same as before.
Tommie Mann –
Full bodied pinot with cola notes and good length. Nice treat. Better options at $250.
Randolph Zamora –
Complex and structured Pinot Noir with black cherry, forest floor, lavender, clove, and cinnamon notes. Drink now or age up to 5 years.
Thomas Bueno –
Delightful and ready to enjoy.
Martha Nguyen –
Impressive Pinot for a Cabernet lover. Not your usual thin and sweet Pinot. A bit pricey but worth the try.
Mohammad Field –
Unusual aromatics of underbrush, asphalt and cherry cola. Cola flavors with earthy quality of mushroom, wet leaves and freshly mowed lawn. Nicely balanced and worth aging.
Ruth Chambers –
Intense black cherry notes and full-bodied character define this robust California Pinot.
Wilma Kroetch –
Unremarkable red wine lacking pinot characteristics and fruit.
David Danford –
Balanced, fresh and tart aroma of raspberries and red currants. Palate has integrated tannins and balanced acidity with tarry notes of cherries and wild strawberries. Medium length with sweet spice and tomato leave notes. Decant 20 min, best after a couple of years.
Pamela Giddens –
Great family night with excellent wine.
George Young –
“Beautiful deep color, nice fragrance, and robust flavors. Exceptional now and will improve with age.”
Charles Willmore –
Dark cherry and red plum with mushroom, mineral, and baking spices. Muscular density with a refined finish.
Felix Lawson –
Average Sonoma Pinot, disappointing quality for price. Cork didn’t seal after Coravin. Careless shipping packaging. Better options available for lower price.
Jason Steele –
1st bottle Coravin’d was defective with a chemical smell, probably too much Ethyl Acetate. 2016 bottle was average, around 89 or 90 after half an hour of breathing. Ethyl acetate is formed as spoilage yeast in winemaking.
Louella Dees –
Robust elegance with a mild to medium flavor density. The outstanding finish lingers for days with a spice trail that builds late. Paired well with a lamb burger, Mexican calabaza squash and a salad of chilled sautéed brussel sprouts. Boars’ View’s The Coast is their top-tier pinot noir.
Helen Daniels –
PN has a dark color with little smell and fruit, some pepper. Not much after flavor, better after swirling. Not bad, not great, not worth more than $45.
