Domaine Alain Graillot Crozes-Hermitage La Guiraude 2019 stands as a pinnacle of Syrah excellence. Alain, a visionary winemaker, personally selects the fruit for this cuve, a barrel selection from the estate’s finest Crozes-Hermitage lots. The wine, a stem-fermented masterpiece, embodies both power and elegance, destined for graceful aging.

In the glass, the La Guiraude 2019 unveils a deep, glass-staining ruby, foreshadowing the richness within. Aromas of cassis, cherry-cola, and olive paste greet the senses, mingling with exotic spices and pungent flowers. The palate is an orchestra of sweet black and blue fruit, accented by notes of allspice, salty olive, and candied violet. Impressively deep and energetic, the wine’s youthfully chewy tannins add grip, leading to a remarkably long and focused finish echoing floral and mineral nuances.

Wine Advocate awards this vintage 95 points, describing it as a full-bodied, rich effort with bold flavors of blackberry jam and a velvety finish. Vinous concurs, bestowing 95 points, praising its impressive depth, energy, and a focused finish that emphatically repeats floral and mineral notes. Alain Graillot’s La Guiraude 2019, a non-terroir specific gem, stands as a testament to exceptional vintages and the enduring artistry of one of Rhone Valley’s finest winemakers.

    1. Kenneth Black

Concentrated, lush, rich, and deep, the berries are sweet, dark, and opulent, yet with freshness and complexity, finishing with olives, herbs and more of those intense, sweet fruits. Drink from 2022-2034.

    2. Gloria Dover

Drinking really well immediately out of the bottle with rich dark cassis, earth, and olive brine. Palate staining, surprisingly expressive, balanced with hidden structure that did not excessively tighten up, and good depth. Dare I say almost gonon like with upfront fruit appeal mixed with an underlying wild feral aspect that is hard to put down.

    3. WA

The 2019 Crozes Hermitage la Guiraude was bottled in March 2021, but it is just being sold this spring (2022). It’s a full-bodied, rich effort, almost a bit over the top, with bold flavors of blackberry jam, uncluttered and unsoftened by much in the way of new oak. It’s concentrated and intense, a bit chewy without being overly hard, with a long, velvety finish.

    4. VIN

Glass-staining ruby. Cassis, cherry-cola, olive paste, exotic spices and pungent flowers on the highly expressive nose. Shows impressive depth as well as energy to its sweet black and blue fruit, allspice, salty olive and candied violet flavors, which take on a mineral aspect with air. Youthfully chewy tannins add grip to an impressively long and focused finish that emphatically repeats the floral and mineral notes. I’ve no doubt that this wine will reward patience, and my drinking window is probably overly conservative.
