Jose Zuccardi Malbec 2016 is sourced from Paraje Altamira and contains a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon from Gualtallary. Each variety is naturally fermented in concrete vats, using wild yeasts, and is then aged in foudres and second-use barrels for 24 months.
The Top 100 Wine List, a classic Wine Spectator has been publishing since 1988, is a selection of the labels that have stood out in the course of the year for their outstanding quality, value, availability, and ability to thrill. The list encompasses a vast array of wineries, regions, and successful vintages from all around the globe.

4 reviews for Zuccardi Jose Zuccardi Malbec 2016

    1. WS

Explosively fruity aromas and flavors of blackberry, dark cherry and plum tart are creamy and filled with rich savory and cooking spice accents. Powerfully structured, showing dark chocolate and mocha on the finish, with hints of dried mint. Drink now through 2025. 5,000 cases made, 2,000 cases imported.

    2. WA

The 2016 José Zuccardi was produced with grapes (90% Malbec and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon) from Altamira and Gualtallary in the Valle de Uco. This is the continuation of the old Z bottling, but here the wine is aged mostly in 2,500-liter oak vats rather than in smaller barriques. There are herbal notes reminiscent of green tea leaves, spices and berries. The palate is serious and has chalky tannins, as they select grapes from places in the Valle de Uco that have limestone soils. It seems like they have found the way ahead for this wine in 2016; it’s fine, precise and elegant. 40,000 bottles were filled in August 2018.

    3. DEC

A serious Malbec, built for the long haul. Intense, harmonious black fruit aromatics; hints of spice, savouriness and a whisper of florality, opening up with time in glass to include notes of richer black cherry and mulberries. Ageing in concrete and old oak foudres for 12 months gives fine tannins and a silkiness to the mouthfeel. Incredible depth of spicy cassis fruit, with a base note of dry earthiness and ground black spices. Layers unfurl as the palate opens up: ripe plum, velvety mulberry and raspberry notes, a touch of pomegranate, underpinned by fresh acidity. Poised, with a long, lingering finish.

    4. PTD

Some real freshness on the nose, but it’s also a bit sour on the end. Taken to an extreme perhaps? Shows what can be done rather than what the consumer might find most delicious? Concrete and limestone combo a bit stonily demanding. Although 24 hours later from an open bottle it was much more welcoming with the fruit more in evidence.
