In the heart of Paso Robles, Tablas Creek Vineyards has crafted a true masterpiece with their ‘Esprit de Tablas’ 2019. This wine, composed of 39% Mourvadre, 30% Grenache, 21% Syrah, and 10% Counoise, is a testament to the winemaking expertise of Neil Collins.

In the glass, the 2019 ‘Esprit de Tablas’ presents a deep, vivid ruby hue that beckons you in. The aromas are a symphony of complexity, with notes of cherry cola, dark berry, and lavender accented by hints of smoke and spice. With aeration, licorice and succulent herb notes gracefully emerge.

Upon the first sip, this wine reveals its charm. It’s gently sweet and broad on the palate, offering a delightful interplay of blackberry, cherry preserve, mocha, and floral pastille flavors. As you explore further, you’ll notice a tightening of flavors through the midpalate, accompanied by a slow, subtle emergence of gently gripping tannins. The finish is impressively long, echoing the initial spice and floral notes that dance on the senses.

Critics have lavished praise on this wine, with Vinous awarding it 95 points for its fine clarity and enduring finish. James Suckling, with a score of 94 points, notes the delightful aromas of crushed rose petals and red cherries, supported by well-integrated tannins. Wine Enthusiast, at 93 points, applauds its vibrant freshness, describing it as an “Editors’ Choice.” Wine & Spirits, with a score of 92 points, praises its plush and lively character with a suggestion that it has the potential to age beautifully.

    1. BL

A rich and spicy wine that combines the meatiness of Mourvedre, the elegance of Syrah, and the fruitiness of Grenache; seamless, lush, and racy with aging potential.

    2. JS

A delightful nose of crushed rose petals, red cherries and rosemary. Full-bodied with fine, well-integrated tannins and dense fruit character. Layered and balanced with a steely, mineral-like backbone. Dried herbs and cocoa come through. Great length. Drink now or hold.

I got a bottle at Costco for $50 a few days ago. It is sour, somewhat tannic, thin like it has been diluted with water, and has no particular character except for some fruitiness. This is a $5 bottle of wine not $50 and the glowing reviews are obviously fake.

    Wine Enthusiast
Proprietor Jason Haas is amplifying the freshness on his family's estate wines, as evidenced in this blend of 39% Mourvèdre, 30% Grenache, 21% Syrah and 10% Counoise. Snappy and vibrant aromas of raspberry and fennel pollen lead into a bright palate of lavender, smashed red fruits and delicate chaparral herbs.

    Vinous
Deep, vivid ruby. Smoke- and spice-accented cherry cola, dark berry and lavender aromas show fine clarity, and licorice and succulent herb notes emerge with aeration. Gently sweet and broad in the mouth, offering appealingly sweet blackberry, cherry preserve, mocha and floral pastille flavors that tighten up through the midpalate. Gently gripping tannins sneak in slowly on an impressively long finish that strongly repeats the spice and floral notes.

    Wine & Spirits
Esprit de Tablas in 2019 blends about 40 percent mourvedre with grenache, syrah and counoise. It’s plush and lively, plainly in the red spectrum of fruit, with a zin-like directness and an earthy, leathery grip of tannin. Somewhat closed, it feels coiled up, with the stuff to age, or to pour with pork.
