Nestled in the breathtaking Fort Ross Seaview AVA, RAEN Winery, under the visionary stewardship of proprietors and winegrowers Carlo and Dante Mondavi, with Melanie McIntyre as the associate winegrower, presents the RAEN Fort Ross Seaview Pinot Noir Sea Field Vineyard 2021. This exquisite raen pinot noir, crafted from the unique 777 clone, is a testament to the Mondavi legacy, showcasing their commitment to organic, regenerative, and biodynamic farming practices across their raen vineyards.
The 2021 vintage, deemed one of RAEN’s finest achievements, encapsulates the essence of their holistic approach to viticulture. The vines, thriving in the ancient, diverse marine soils of the Franciscan Complex, yield a raen pinot that is a celebration of the land and sea. The Sea Field Vineyard, a monopole stretching 4.8 acres at an elevation of 1,000 feet, is the birthplace of raen wine that resonates with an ethereal elegance.
In the glass, this raen vineyard pinot noir displays a transparent jeweled ruby hue, indicative of its pristine character and vibrancy. The nose is a symphony of aromatic complexity, where ripe cherry, crushed strawberries, and fresh rose petals intertwine with plums, blood orange, and a whisper of incense, creating a captivating and complex bouquet.
On the palate, the raen winery pinot noir unfolds a tapestry of flavors. Wild strawberries and ripe black raspberry dominate, elegantly interlaced with subtle violet flowers and white tea. Underlying notes of savory herbs and powdery dirt add depth, while sweet, well-integrated tannins provide a smooth, elegant mouthfeel. This medium-bodied raen pinot is dry, with a natural perception of sweetness and well-balanced acidity, enhancing its aging potential.
Critical acclaim for this raen fort ross seaview pinot noir is substantial. Wine Spectator awarded it 95 points, highlighting its mulled blood orange, strawberry, and raspberry fruit, married with a vibrant savory edge and hints of red tea and incense. The finish, underscored by crushed sea shell hints, adds lingering tension. Jeb Dunnuck praised it with 99 points, emphasizing its superb aromatics and sweet tannins. James Suckling gave it 98 points, noting its extreme aromatic profile and full-bodied, firm structure. Vinous recognized its floral intensity and flavor complexity with 95 points, acknowledging its potential to reveal more nuances over time.
The raen wine review consensus suggests that this Pinot Noir pairs exceptionally well with a variety of dishes. Its medium body, vibrant acidity, and rich flavor profile make it an ideal companion for grilled salmon or tuna, roasted duck or chicken, mushroom risotto, and a cheese platter featuring softer cheeses like Brie or Camembert. Vegetarian dishes featuring root vegetables or roasted beets also make delightful pairings, echoing the wine’s earthy notes.
In summary, the RAEN Fort Ross Seaview Pinot Noir Sea Field Vineyard 2021 is a masterpiece of winemaking. It encapsulates the beauty of its terroir and the dedication of the Mondavi family to producing world-class wines. This raen wine review highlights a creation that is not only a reflection of a perfect growing season but also a celebration of the harmony between nature and the art of winemaking.

15 reviews for RAEN Fort Ross Seaview Pinot Noir Sea Field Vineyard 2021

    1. Mary Scott

      Excellent.

    2. Timothy Courtney

Thanksgiving wine with high expectations met. Beautiful garnet color, precise and focused. Red fruits with strawberry and a hint of cherry. Medium-bodied with fine tannins.

    3. Rodney Jones

Young and fresh Pinot with cherry and strawberry flavors and a bit of floral notes. Great acidity and enjoyable.

    4. Terry Kennedy

Good Fort Ross-Seaview, light, minerally, great aroma, short finish. Overhyped due to pedigree, overpriced. Prefer Peay Scallop Shelf, 40% cheaper and better QPR.

    5. Betty Mcnicholas

Double Blind Pinot from monthly wine group: Youthful, ripe strawberry and red berries with tangy tartness. Cool freshness and restraint. Surprisingly young.

    6. Riley Porter

Soft, dusty red with muted red cherry and raspberry. Seamless entry. Not enough richness, depth, or complexity. Will hold onto remaining bottles and wait.

    7. Reva Porter

      Fruit-forward and easy to drink.

    8. Paul Holtmeier

Park90’s American Pinot had a sweet fruit profile that felt artificial and distracting.

    9. Ruth Sparks

Balanced, elegant, and delicious with notes of wildberry, flower, red plum, and mineral. Drinks well now with air, but will age beautifully. Enjoyed with shoyu chicken.

    10. Carlos Davidson

Drinkable now, may improve in 3-4 years, but overpriced.

    11. Brian Salano

Medium weight and color with restrained fruit and astringency. Needs more time to develop. Regionally unique but didn’t resonate with me.

    12. Cornelius Sellman

Light with good body and fruit, elegant with a long finish and good acidity. While a strong effort, for the price, I’d recommend other Sonoma coast wines like Hirsch or Peay.

    13. Lisa Clanton

Intense black cherry, spice, cola, and floral aroma. Medium acidity and tannins. Needs a few more years in the bottle to fully mature.

    14. JS

Extremely aromatic with plums, crushed strawberries, rose flower, powdery dirt, before turning to cherries. Hints of flower stems. Perfumed. Full-bodied and very, very firm. Rather steely. Tight at the end. It opens beautifully in an hour or so. Drink after 2025.

    15. VIN

The 2021 Pinot Noir Sea Field is intensely floral and full of flavor, with cool-climate savoriness driving a core of bright, red-toned fruit. Deceptively medium in body, the 2021 has a ton of complexity waiting to emerge. Time in the glass brings out compelling inner perfume and quite a bit of nuance. But, it is tightly wound and quite reticent at this stage.
