Wine Description
Pintia wine by Vega Sicilia 2018 is an exceptional wine from the Toro D.O. wine region in Castilla y Leon, north-western Spain. Crafted by winemaker Gonzalo Iturriaga, this wine showcases the unique characteristics of the region and the meticulous winemaking process of Vega Sicilia.
The vineyards of Pintia are located on the banks of the Douro River, benefiting from the region’s extreme climate with cold winters and hot summers. The complex soils, renowned for their abundant pebble content, add to the wine’s distinctiveness. The winemakers carefully select the perfect harvest period to preserve the wine’s freshness and acidity. The 2018 vintage experienced more rainfall, but the grapes showed great promise during the grape skin tasting. The resulting wine exhibits fruity polymerised tannins, a testament to the winemaking team’s expertise.
In the glass, Pintia 2018 entices with its deep, brooding color. On the nose, it reveals an intriguing combination of tarry blackberries, fresh blue fruit, and hints of iron, wet stones, and violets. A subtle note of mocha adds complexity to the aromatic profile. On the palate, this full-bodied wine displays a mineral character that is complemented by a stony feel, delivering an elegant and nuanced experience. Despite its weight, Pintia remains light on its feet, displaying excellent balance and poise. It demonstrates the craftsmanship of Vega Sicilia, offering a wine that can be enjoyed now or cellared for the next decade.
Renowned wine critic James Suckling awarded Pintia 2018 an impressive 96 points, noting its freshness, elegance, and nuanced character. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate also praised this vintage, awarding it 95 points and describing it as one of the finest vintages of Pintia. Wine Spectator awarded it 93 points, highlighting its smooth and creamy texture, flavors of mulled cherry and black plum reduction, and a long, fragrant finish.
Pintia by Vega Sicilia 2018 is a wine that embodies the essence of the Toro D.O. region. With its refined profile, precise winemaking techniques, and critical acclaim, this wine is a true gem, capturing the terroir and delivering an exceptional drinking experience.

Rickie Gibson –
Diluted Toro wine with good grip, but not impressive.
Michael Hogans –
Pintia’s 2014 vintage is impressive. It has a mix of black cherry, moist dark soil, crushed stone, and animal musk flavors. The velvety texture floods the senses with dark red fruits. The long finish has ripe black fruits mixed with exotic spice and citrus.
Jesse Roberts –
Excellent wine, rich and ripe with good use of oak. Round and silky, perfect to enjoy at a young age. Great value to accompany pintxos at Gandarias. 90+ rating.
Janine Hammer –
Vega Sicilia Unico is a medium-weight wine with a great balance of black and red cherry flavors. It’s perfect to cellar for a few years.
Denis Porras –
Intense nose of black cherries, raspberries, violets, and spice. Full-bodied with crisp acidity and high tannins. Needs 5-8 years to reach full potential. Excellent depth.
Daniel Franty –
Exceptional blend, 91+ points.
Sandra Mattingly –
Young with typical notes. More alcohol and tannins than 2014. Enjoy in 2021.
Anna Smith –
A bold and complex 100% Tinta de Toro with notes of dark cherry, plum, fig, soy sauce, earth, oak, and espresso. Full-bodied with plush tannins, moderate acidity, and a long finish. Drinking well now, but will only get better with age.
Paul Nelson –
Intense blackberry and mineral aroma with a hint of oak. Strong tannins at first, but mellows after 3 hours of decanting. Delicious now, but will improve with time.
Mary Jones –
Delicious wine with dark fruit, tobacco, cedar, cocoa notes. Lush palate and semi-sweet chocolate finish. Best to wait 2 years.
Kayla Pothier –
Great oak and vanilla notes, especially after a 3-4 hour decant. Pintia has earned 4.5 stars. Perfect for Chinese New Year 2021.
Charles Bashore –
Purple hue. Cassis, vanilla, and toast notes. Medium+ acidity and tannin, with a smooth finish.
Marion Tseng –
Aggressive oak masks the wine’s true character. Lactic and vanilla notes overpower the dark fruit. Modern, polished, and somewhat manipulated. Better to age.
Arthur Garcia –
Spot-on review by Nutty08: American oak, bourbon barrel, faint dill, ultra dark, lactic notes, wood tannins. I called it “new world modern cabernet” when served blind. Strayed from the original bottling.
Stephanie Kuehne –
Decant for 1.5 hours to experience this chameleon of a wine. Patience required!
Lisa Pennington –
Review: Stóra Toro smakkið – Fíngerð blómaangan, brunatónar, kjötkraftur, og salmíak. Mjög þægilegt vín.
Dawn Cowan –
Ruby colored wine with medium legs, no sediment. Silky texture, medium/full body, medium acidity, long finish.
Nancy Nelson –
This wine is rich with a beautiful mouthfeel. It’s expensive at $60, but worth every drop. It gets 94 points. Drink it till 2030 with grilled lamb, shish kebabs or pasta. Stunning Tempranillo.
Gloria Michaelson –
Precise, intense, yet fresh and powerful. Perfectly balanced with ripe black fruit and a smoky, floral touch. Dense but gentle tannins and a smooth finish.
Melinda Sheldon –
Balanced and complex with sweet black cherry and blackberry notes, hints of tobacco, dark chocolate, and oak. Fairly tannic with a lingering tar impression. Needs a few more years to improve.
Lana Lovie –
Great Pintia. Young but impressive. 92 points. Not decanted.
Robert Pocius –
“Pintia 2016 is slightly less impressive than 2015 but has more potential. 91 pts. Needs aging.”
Patricia Widrick –
Young Pintia, 100% Tempranillo, aged 12 months on French and American oak. Well-balanced black and blue fruit with long finish. Magical in 5-8 years.
Carolyn Evans –
Great QPR. Deep and profound with great complexity, balance, and depth. A definite buy at $40.
James Evans –
2016 Pintia vintage: less alcohol and more freshness due to cooler and drier climate. Red fruit flavor, but little nose at first. Best to wait a few more years to enjoy.
Tony Khatri –
Stunning Pintia vintage with black cherry and black currant notes, gentle tannins, and an intense, multi-layered finish. Drink now or cellar for 3-5 years.
Ronald Steck –
Pintia vintage is stunning with black cherries, black currants, black pepper, hints of licorice, vanilla, and smoke. Full-bodied and multi-layered palate with gentle tannins and intense ever-lasting finish. Drinkable now, cellaring for 3-5 years recommended.
Gladys Dehaven –
Thick and soupy with huge aromatic burst of molasses, chocolate, truffles, figs, dates, stewed prunes. Soft with velvety tannins. Lacks biting acidity, won’t age due to low acidity. Enjoyable, but not my favorite.
Raymond Parker –
“Pintia: Robust, bold, beautiful tannins. Top 3 bottle. Love Pintia. Cheers!”
Anthony Mcconnell –
Aroma is nice but requires 2 hours of decanting.
Darrel Borges –
Dark fruit, cedar, burnt brown sugar. Plum, cherry, chocolate on finish. Needs cellaring or decant.
Dorothy Soloveichik –
Spanish reds: a new experience. Amazing aroma and lots of fruit. Substantial, still young. Very good.
Karie Jones –
Dense medium-bodied wine with layers of black cherry and black currant flavors. Better on the second day and needs more aging, at least two more years. Will become a stately wine.
Nancy Brantley –
Dark, youthful ruby purple. Warm nose of hedgerow fruit. Dark sweet fruit on the palate, a bit confected. Very pure and crisp. A bit young, but could be good with time. Not worth rebuying at this price.
Donald Nolan –
Best Spanish Tempranillo of the night.
David Houser –
“Worth its price, complex.”
Janice Palmer –
Favorite wine, but this bottle seemed off. Uncertain if corked, but nose and finish didn’t feel right. No score.
Kenia Blake –
Vega Sicilia with beef tenderloin at Hótel Edition: Pintia 2017 was better than 2016. Dark tones were perfect. Very fine wine.
Leland Kiser –
Vega Sicilia at Hótel Edition: Unusual light color. Sour scent, dark tones of chocolate, mint, and anise. A raw taste with some sweetness. Lacks dark tones, but no obvious flaws. 2016 may not be a great year for Toro.
Antonio Marshall –
Great wine! Ready to drink now, but can still be aged.
Beverly Brown –
Full-bodied and powerful taste with a hint of unpolished tannins. Best to be opened in about five years.
Lisa Brantley –
Poor vintage or cooked bottle, with a nose that smells like magic marker. Not enjoyable to drink.
Sylvie Garcia –
Good, but not worth the price. Other Toro wines like Termes and URO are better bargains. Potential off vintage.
Kieth Lockwood –
Intense licorice nose, powerful body with dark ripe berries and mild tannins. Likeable and expressive.
Loretta Gamba –
Review: Complex with flavors of black cherries, prunes, blueberries, oak-vanilla, tobacco, dark chocolate, forest floor, coffee, eucalyptus/mint, spices, high acidity, med+ tannins, high abv, full body, long finish. Drink now or age further with 2 hours decanting.
Willie Dininno –
Pintia 2015: Dark crimson with cherry nose, hints of tobacco and chocolate, powerful after an hour’s decant. Bottles 12 and 14 of 23 at Genting Sempah early birthday celebration.
Dinorah Begley –
Young, intense, elevated wine – a stunning monster. Need more bottles!
Arthur Gomez –
Pale ruby color with green notes on the nose. High acidity and tight tannins with a dominant red fruit aroma on the palate. Slightly disjointed with a spicy finish and no further development. Not in its prime.
Diana Olson –
Review: NOTK Spanish Grand Cru tasting at Supernova hotel, Rotterdam. Young and restrained with smokey notes, coffee, black currant, blueberries, and potpourri. Medium+ tannins, medium+ finish. 91+.
Karen Akerley –
Flavors of earth, dust, wood, currants, minerals, and florals. Tight, but will evolve. 92+
Caryl Swain –
Great Toro wine with dark fruit and precision. Vega Scilia quality with a singular, expressive profile. Improved with extended oxidation. 92+.
William White –
Pintia 2015: best tasted in 6 months. Soft and elegant texture with ripe blackberries and cherries, fine-grained tannins, juicy mouthfeel. Great value at $45-50.
Kimberly Webb –
Tasty Toro. Rich fruits, full-bodied.
Sophie Brown –
Rich, smoky luxury with intense flavors of blackberry, vanilla, and cedar. Velvety texture, full body, and a long finish.
David Urquhart –
Full-bodied with intense fig, prune, cassis, pencil lead, and spice notes. Medium+ acidity and high tannin, which is smooth and integrated.
Kyle Monnier –
Review: Sommelier’s blind bottle was guessed as Rioja. Oak-driven, needs time to balance. Aromas of vanilla, tobacco, blackberry, spices, chocolate. Medium+ finish, 20% American oak, rest in French barrels.
Glenn James –
Tightly grippy tannins, savoury dark fruits, clay and earth with a hint of sweet spice. Time will help.
Glenda Rockwell –
Lush black fruits and ample tannins with a slightly hot sensation and medium herbal finish. Perfect for a PnP at a local Spanish restaurant.
Donn Willis –
A well-balanced Toro Tempranillo with notes of fig, leather, clove, prune, plum, and blackberry. The soft vanilla and long finish make it a great choice. Cellaring for 3+ years is recommended.
Elisabeth Arroyo –
Brooding and tannic, with typical Tempranillo notes on the nose. Plum and stewed black fruits on the palate. Needs a 2 hour decant now, but will be worth keeping for another 5-7 years. 92 on the first day, 94 on the second. Next bottle in 2025.
Michael Williams –
Clear, deep ruby with blackberry, strawberry, and vanilla notes. High acidity, tannins, and alcohol. Long finish. Drink now or in 5 years. Wow – still a baby but showing well.
Anne Zappulla –
Great young Pintia, decanted for 30 min. Already very nice, one of my best yet. 92+ pts.
Linda Plackett –
Firm tannins and medium body with red fruits and spice. Nice nose.
Daniel Fletcher –
Rich blackberry and plum with earthy and oaky notes, balanced by acidity and tannins.
Jerry Haskell –
Great wine from top producer. Medium density, mild tannins, currant and cherry fruits. Young with noticeable alcohol, but not overpowering.
Jermaine Winkle –
Crafty wine making with unmistakable quality. Enjoyable and easy to understand. Tastes like a 2003 Right Bank Bordeaux profile after 7 years of aging with roasted plums and black figs, hints of vanilla. Drink now and over 5 years.
Diane Ballard –
Modern and oak-forward.
James Tamayo –
Rich and inky with plums, red flowers, and a hint of mint. Low acidity, pairs well with truffled mushrooms.
Brenda Lovecchio –
Vega Sicilia’s Tempranillo is youthful, dense, and concentrated. Its fresh aroma of blackberries, black cherries, chocolate, and cassis is accompanied by medium acidity and rich tannins.
Randall Foley –
Dark ruby red with intense aromas of toffee, coffee and ripe black fruit. Robust and harmonious with a long and delicious finish. Perfect for celebrating special occasions.
Brian Salisbury –
Dark and sexy but needs time to breathe. Strong oak influence, with hints of vanilla, chocolate, cloves, cinnamon, cherry, and red fruits. High alcohol content, similar to whiskey. Aged longer for better balance. Softens on day two. Double decant and let it breathe. 92/100.
Ricardo Boston –
Round, full-bodied and highly enjoyable. Pairs well with meat and heavier dishes.
Kathryn Johnson –
Medium-bodied ruby with notes of strawberry, leather, vanilla, and wood. High acidity, medium tannins, and a long finish. Drink now, but even better after a few years.
Stephen Stevens –
Intense and concentrated black Tempranillo with elegant structure and tannins. Fantastic wine with pure fruit. Age for 7 years.
