Introducing the exquisite Flor de Pingus 2020, a standout red wine from the esteemed Dominio de Pingus winery, nestled in the heart of Spain’s Ribera Del Duero region. This wine reflects the dedication and expertise of winemaker Peter Sisseck, a name synonymous with quality and innovation in the world of Spanish wine. The Flor de Pingus 2020 is a testament to the winery’s commitment to producing modern wines that embody a sense of unique individuality and elegance.

Upon pouring, pingus wine reveals its vibrant medium ruby hue, a prelude to its complexity and depth. The color is clear and bright, inviting one to explore further. The first impression is a delightful bouquet of cedar, vanilla, and chocolate, mingling with the rich scents of dark plums and dark cherries, accented by intriguing hints of licorice and anise. This aromatic harmony is both floral and perfumed, setting the stage for a truly sensory experience.

Tasting this red wine, one is greeted with a perfectly balanced medium body. The presence of medium supple tannins and a high alcohol content is immediately noticeable, contributing to the wine’s structure and depth. The flavors are a direct reflection of its aroma, with cedar and vanilla taking the lead, followed by the juicy and ripe nuances of dark plums and dark cherries. The finish is long and satisfying, leaving a lasting impression of the wine’s quality and the skill behind its creation.

Critics have been quick to recognize the Flor de Pingus 2020 for its outstanding qualities. James Suckling awarded it 94 points, noting its linear and toned profile, enriched with very fine tannins that demonstrate both strength and length. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate also bestowed 94 points, highlighting the wine’s harmonious and elegant nature, marked by textured tannins and a controlled ripeness that promises to evolve beautifully over time. Wine Spectator, with a rating of 92 points, applauded its plush texture and the vibrant acidity that elevates the flavors of black plum and crushed black cherry.

The Flor de Pingus 2020 is more than just a wine; it’s a journey through the senses, showcasing the best of what the Ribera Del Duero region has to offer. Its composition, primarily Tempranillo, is a testament to the quality of vines planted in this prestigious area. The decision to use around 20% new oak in its aging process adds another layer of complexity, promising a future where Garnacha may also play a role in its blend.

In conclusion, the Flor de Pingus 2020 from Dominio de Pingus is a must-try for anyone interested in exploring the rich tapestry of Spanish wines. Its blend of harmonious elegance, aromatic floral notes, and well-structured tannins make it a standout choice for those seeking to experience one of the finest examples of wine from the Ribera Del Duero region. 1. WS

Plush in texture and elegant overall, with a fresh spine of acidity enlivening black plum reduction and crushed black cherry fruit, violet and tobacco, vanilla and mineral accents as they wrap around a firm core of fine-grained tannins. Drink now through 2030.

    2. WA

There is around 20% new oak in the 2020 Flor de Pingus, and because it has a little younger vines (there was a land-consolidation project in La Horra in 2006!), there’ll be some Garnacha starting in 2021 and maybe some oak vats for aging too. All this shows the direction, where he found structure and volume in the palate, with textured tannins. It’s harmonious and elegant, aromatic and floral, perfumed and showy, with contained ripeness and around 14% alcohol. The palate is quite powerful, with abundant but fine tannins.

    3. JS

Aromas of perfumes and violets with blueberries follow through to a medium body with very fine tannins that run the length of the wine and show muscle and length. Linear and toned. Give this time to open and show you more. Try after 2026.

Flor is what Peter Sisseck calls "my village wine", sourced from La Horra with a smidgeon from Olmedillo. Featuring 3% Grenache for the first time, as well as 0.5% of white grapes, it's a gentle, precise, beautifully balanced red, with granular tannins, plum, liquorice and wild strawberry flavours and a subtle, palate-caressing finish.
