Crafted by the skilled hands of Winemaker Andy Erickson, the Mayacamas Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 stands as a stellar example of mountain-grown excellence. Originating from the esteemed Mayacamas estate, nestled within the 475-acre property on Mount Veeder, this wine embodies the unique terroir of its 12 Cabernet Sauvignon blocks, positioned between 1,800 to 2,200 feet above sea level.

Upon first glance, the color of the wine presents a deep, garnet hue, beckoning with its vibrant allure. On the nose, the aromatic profile is a complex tapestry of scents, beginning with an enticing blend of zesty sweet bay leaf and sassafras. This melds seamlessly into a heart of steeped red currant and mulberry fruit. The palate experience is further enriched by a backdrop of bright acidity and iron-laced tannins, giving the wine a distinct character and invigorating energy.

The winemaking process at Mayacamas Vineyards is marked by meticulous attention to detail. Grapes are hand-harvested in the cool dawn to ensure pristine condition. Following careful sorting and destemming, the must undergo a fermentation and maceration period ranging from 10 to 25 days. The wine matures in a mix of oak cooperage, including both large format foudres and barriques, for an extensive 36 months, followed by an additional year of bottle conditioning before release.

This blend, varying by vintage, may include hints of Cabernet Franc and/or Merlot, adding layers to its elegant, polished profile. On the palate, the wine unfurls with notes of blood orange, crushed raspberry, mint, and exotic spices, offering a lingering, majestic presence. This is a wine that not only captures the essence of Mayacamas Cabernet but also promises exceptional longevity. Ideal for enjoyment from 2025 through 2045, it epitomizes the winery’s dedication to producing wines that are both reflective of their origin and timelessly elegant.

The Mayacamas Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 has been lauded by critics for its distinctive character and promising longevity. Wine Spectator awarded it 96 points, highlighting its energetic blend of fruit, savory, and mineral elements and an old-school style that suggests a lengthy future. Vinous gave it an impressive 97 points, praising its return to an elegant, polished style, with a majestic profile of blood orange, crushed raspberry, and exotic spices. Wine Advocate, with a 96-point rating, commended its true-to-history medium-bodied, crisp nature, offering a complex array of dried herbs and mixed berries. Jeb Dunnuck also gave it 96 points, emphasizing its outstanding balance, rich palate of cassis, violets, and graphite, and polished tannins. Lastly, James Suckling rated it 95 points, captivated by its seductive aromas of dark cherries and spiced plums, and a velvety, well-balanced palate. These acclaims collectively underscore the wine’s exceptional quality and its embodiment of the classic Napa Valley winemaking tradition.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon remains true to the winery's historic style, offering complex notes of dried herbs and mixed berries, carried across the palate by a wine that's medium-bodied, crisp and somewhat lean by modern Napa standards. It finishes long and dusty, promising well for the future.

Moving to the current releases, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is clearly on another level. Cassis, violets, spring flowers, and graphite, as well as a beautiful sense of minerality, all emerge on the nose, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, fine, polished tannins, fabulous balance, and a great finish.

    James Suckling
Seductive aromas of dark cherries, mulberries, spiced plums, wild herbs and dried spices. Medium to full body with finely grained tannins. Textural and suave with a voluptuous array of berries, cherries and raw cocoa on the palate. Velvety and well-balanced with a focused developing finish.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon marks a return to a more elegant, polished style following the two powerhouses that are the 2017 and 2018. Silky, aromatic, and beautifully perfumed, the 2019 is majestic from the very first taste. There is plenty of depth and structure, as well as the balance to support decades of very fine drinking. Blood orange, crushed raspberry, mint, and exotic spice nuances linger. Even in the early going, the 2019 is shaping up to be majestic.
