Wine Description
Massican Chardonnay from Hyde Vineyard 2022 is an exquisite expression of California Chardonnay, sourced from the prestigious Hyde Vineyard in Carneros. This wine, crafted by the talented winemaker Dan Petroski at Massican Winery, showcases the highest pedigree of Hyde Vineyard’s chardonnay grapes.
Nestled in the southern part of Napa Valley, Hyde Vineyard boasts a rich history dating back to 1979 when Larry Hyde founded it. The vineyard’s rolling hills, kissed by the morning fog and blessed with southeast exposure, create an ideal terroir for Chardonnay. The specific parcel of Musque clone of Chardonnay used for this bottling was meticulously planted in 1992, resulting in exceptional fruit quality. This exclusive single-vineyard offering is made by carefully fermenting and aging the Massican Chardonnay 2022 in French Oak before bottling.
Massican Chardonnay from Hyde Vineyard 2022 opens with an enchanting bouquet that tantalizes the senses. The combination of citrus zest, honey, and spice in the scent create a delightful harmony that easily captures your attention.
On the palate, this wine continues to impress with its vibrant and layered flavors. I perceive a crisp green apple flavor at first sip, and afterwards, a rich and smooth lemon creaminess. A subtle touch of sea salt adds an intriguing saline quality, enhancing the overall complexity and depth of the wine.
Critically acclaimed, this wine has received high praise from esteemed wine experts. Perfumed with grapefruit skin, green apple, and apple blossom, it exemplifies freshness and complexity. The well-structured palate offers bright bursts of citrus, slate, and lemon peel, with the oak playing a supporting role, adding spice and tension to the overall experience.
Freshness and fragrance are the hallmarks of Massican Chardonnay from Hyde Vineyard 2022. The enticing aromas of lemon verbena, fresh ginger, lemongrass, and a hint of crunchy sea salt give way to a delightful medley of juicy nectarine, tangy tangerine, and dried mango flavors. The finish is long and satisfying, leaving a lasting impression on the palate.

Eleanor Katz –
Fantastic. Lemon notes, hints of floral, electrifying acidity, yet a satisfyingly fuller finish. Adore it.
Jay Swanston –
Perfectly balanced and bursting with flavor. Amazing.
Ray Johnson –
Lemony nose, medium ripeness. Good acidity, lemon upfront, peach finish. Improved with time. Better at room temp.
Meredith Slagle –
A beautiful golden hue with tropical and citrus fruit aromas and a hint of toast. Intense and balanced, showcasing tropical fruit flavors. A long, satisfying finish. Exceptional Napa chardonnay.
Leonard Iezzi –
The wine has a complex nose with almond paste, tart lemon citrus, minerals, herbs, and a touch of butterscotch. It has a rich palate with layers of ripe pit fruit, balanced by brisk acidity. The finish is fresh with ripe apple fruit, subtle hints of minerals and citrus.
Kelsey Todd –
Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay breaks expectations, with a mix of saline, tangerine, and tart citrus. It’s a complex and fascinating wine that combines elements from different countries and grapes. The clear expression of Chardonnay without makeup brings a Chablis-like quality. Room to grow with plenty of fruit and electric spine. Missed out on previous vintages, hoping to rectify in the future.
Jessica Valdez –
Crisp, lemony Chardonnay with citrus notes and a hint of oak. Medium-bodied, bright yellow. Grapefruit and saline on the nose. Tastes of green apple, grapefruit, pear, and minerals. Tight, almost oily finish. 13% alcohol. Enjoy now, not for long-term aging. Tart and lean, more Chablis than Carneros. Unique and enjoyable, solid price.
Patricia Dow –
Impressive Massican Hyde vintage. Broad with minerality, spiciness, and lemon citrus. Fanned mid-palate, distinct Hyde resemblance. Lovely.
Linda Hester –
Lean and refreshing Chardonnay. Light yellow color; nose of orange peel, salt water, and crushed rocks. Tastes of green apple, lime, grapefruit, and quince. Tight and acidic finish. Well-made and refreshing.
Michael Granada –
Short Review: This Chardonnay has softened since last tasting, still lean with no oak. Light yellow with softer aromas of marmalade, apple, and ocean air. Tastes of grapefruit, lime, gooseberry, and lemon zest with a zippy finish. 13.3% alcohol. Refreshing, but lean for under $50.
Joseph Mercurio –
Integrating beautifully, Hyde Chardonnay now shines with lemon, apple, and spice notes. Its medium body and refreshing finish make it a delight. ABV: 13.9%.
Tamar Walker –
Youthful and vibrant with a lean frame, but deep in flavor. Fascinating texture, zesty acidity, and abundant minerals. Bright lemon, apple, floral, and almond notes. Exciting to try again in five years.
Mary Harris –
Loved it! Citrus notes, baking spice on the nose. Acid, green apple, ginger on the palate. Smooth and easy to enjoy.
Joseph Toney –
Surprisingly sweet, yet delightful citrus notes.
Tom Dowling –
Impressive! This aged Massican Chardonnay was a delightful surprise. Perfect for any occasion, it paired wonderfully with prosciutto melon apps. A standout from California’s vineyards.
Theodore Romero –
Excellent.
Leigh Nichols –
Impressive minerality, verve, and breadth. Peak: 2021-2024.
Danita Luten –
A bright and mineral-driven Napa Valley Chardonnay. Lemon, tart apple, and minerality with good length. Medium body, very good acidity. Made from 100% Chardonnay sourced from Hyde Vineyard in Carneros. $45.
Daniel Bartholomew –
This wine is aging gracefully and can be enjoyed for years to come. However, I personally prefer its youthful vibrancy and liveliness.
Benjamin Gray –
Superb wine, even after two days with just half a glass remaining.
Wendy Johnson –
Hyde Vineyard’s 2017 Massican impresses with its rich Hyde characteristics of lemon-lime, green apple, and wet stone. Though I prefer Ramey and Aubert, this wine offers great value. Enjoy with a brief decantation.
Jeffrey Gutierrez –
I was wrong. Brilliant wine. Hyde fruit, spice, lemon. Refreshing, smile-inducing, even on a pandemic Monday!
Sophia Stromquist –
2017 rendition still improving. Crisp fruit, lingering spice finish. Aromatics draw me in. Fresh, balanced, not your typical California Chardonnay.
Ronald Porter –
Delicious, balanced with subtle oak. World class.
Ethel Vogt –
Shortened Review: Medium gold color with a nose of minerals and lemon. High acidity, salty, and medium body on the palate. Medium finish. Excellent balance and has the potential to age well. Another great California chardonnay.
Mark Sheffer –
Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay 2015: Perfect condition, with crunchy pear fruit, clean minerality, and subtle spice. Shows more acidity (Massican) and more richness (Ramey), but clearly related. Cuts through richness in food, still fresh and primary. Delicious now, with potential for aging.
Daryl Hobart –
Clean, mineral-driven Chardonnay with citrus notes and a crisp finish. Enjoyable, though somewhat one-dimensional.
Jerry Heiskell –
Massican Hyde Chardonnay: Vibrant acidity, citrus notes, salty undertone. Hard to resist finishing the whole bottle on a work night.
Ann Mullins –
Exquisite taste.
Maria Rains –
Dan’s wine is an incredible value. Great job!
Jeffery Ulibarri –
Pale yellow with medium acidity and low alcohol content. Dry cork, green apple notes, and a long finish.
Elizabeth Wilkinson –
This Chardonnay is a beautifully balanced wine with yellow fruit notes, sweet and young. It has a medium++ body and shows potential for further development. Wish I had more!
Guy Pilcher –
Young and vibrant, this Hyde wine exudes tart apple flavors. The barrel influence emerges on the finish. Give it another year to fully develop its identity. A work in progress.
Donald Hodges –
Fantastic! Perfect balance, acidity, and a lingering finish.
Stacey Flores –
Color: light gold with hints of canary yellow. Nose: lemon zest, wet rock, crisp pastry, pear confit, lime pie, fennel pollen. Palate: high acidity, medium body, textured. Notes of pear, pastry, and citrus zest linger. Finish: long. Promising, rich, tastefully done. Age for 2 years. Best after 1.5h at room temp.
Earl Lang –
Citrus, spice, and orchard fruit aromas. Medium-bodied with balanced acidity. Slightly less verve than expected, but still enjoyable and probably at peak.
Christopher Willis –
Delightful Chardonnay with a vibrant citrus touch, reminiscent of Massican. Personally, I lean towards the SB.
