Wine Description
Diamond Mountain overlooks the town of Calistoga in the northern reaches of Napa Valley and is part of the Mayacamas Mountains which frame the western edge of the valley. Lokoya’s Diamond Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon was first crafted in 1995, and is sourced from a selection of blocks on three distinct vineyards: the estate-owned Rhyolite Ridge (1,200 feet) and Wallis vineyards (1,500 feet), as well as the Andrew Geoffrey vineyard (1,800 feet). Situated above the fog line, the vineyards experience cooler days and warmer nights with less temperature variation than on the northern valley floor. High elevation, poor soils and a moderate climate yield full-bodied wines that show rich black cherry flavor and notes of dark chocolate with relatively soft tannins.

Linda Emilio –
Napa 2023: the quieter version; 2/6/2023-2/11/2023 (Napa/Sonoma California): My first impression is this is a slightly quieter wine and needs a bit of time. It starts with mostly just a touch of the darker fruits and these incredibly fine, almost not there tannins. With more time it started to a bit more accessible, a bit more open. More sweet dark cherry notes. The vineyard for this wine wasn’t entirely Lokoya until around 2013 (before that they bought fruit when it was available, but it wasn’t always available). With time this was quite nice though.

Did a flight at the winery and this one won round one. By far the most expressive. Spearmint came through. Great acidity and the chops to go 30 years but delicious now. The bottle was opened and double decanted 5 hours before
WS –
Rumbles along with dark plum, black currant and blackberry reduction notes carried by a slightly chunky structure, with tar, dark tobacco and sweet bay leaf supporting the finish. Youthfully rugged and begging for some cellaring, but everything is there. Best from 2024 through 2038. 968 cases made.
WA –
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Diamond Mountain is a blend of two parcels: Wallis and Rhyolite Ridge, with mainly volcanic soils. Scents of crushed stone, pencil shavings, cassis and cherries lead the way, while the palate is full-bodied but not overly ripe or broad, just finely honed, polished, silky and long, with a dusting of fine-grained tannins on the finish.
JD –
A combination from two sites, the 2019 Diamond Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is another elegant, yet concentrated, structured, and expansive Cabernet from Chris that shines on all accounts. Crème de cassis, black raspberries, graphite, scorched earth, and some floral notes all define the nose, and it’s full-bodied on the palate, with terrific purity, building, ripe tannins, bright acidity, and an undeniable sense of minerality on the finish. This rich, concentrated, structured 2019 warrants 5-6 years of bottle age and will be incredibly long lived.
JS –
This is a big wine with solid tannins that are layered and powerful, yet there’s underlying, layered fruit between the phenolics. Suppleness and good length. Tight at the end. Needs three to four years to open.
VIN –
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Diamond Mountain is a huge, strapping wine packed with inky black fruit, graphite, crushed rocks, menthol, bittersweet chocolate and espresso. This huge, virile Cabernet packs a serious punch in its first impression. Time in the glass brings out a whole range of floral and savory notes that are so typical in wines from this appellation. Give the potent tannins a few years to soften.
