Diamond Mountain District

Nestled at the northern tip of Napa Valley, the Diamond Mountain District has a history that dates back to the 1860s when Joseph Schram planted the first vineyard on what is now the Schramsberg Vineyard property. However, it wasn’t until 2001 that this region received official recognition as an American Viticultural Area (AVA). Since then, it has risen in prominence as a producer of exceptional wines.

Diamond Mountain District’s location is integral to its unique character. This AVA, covering 5,000 acres, is perched above Calistoga and boasts an elevation ranging from 656 to 820 feet above sea level. It’s ensconced within the Mayacamas Mountains, separating Napa Valley from Sonoma Valley.

The terroir here is unlike any other in Napa Valley. The sun-drenched slopes, rocky terrain, and well-draining, infertile soils stress the vines, encouraging deep root growth. This struggle for survival results in small yields of grapes that are intensely flavored, offering an exquisite balance of sugars and acidity.

Diamond Mountain District enjoys a warm climate, although it’s not as scorching as some other Napa Valley regions. The typical morning and afternoon fog that blankets the southern part of Napa Valley don’t reach this AVA reliably due to its elevation and northern position. This unique climate allows for a longer growing season, allowing grapes to achieve full phenolic ripeness in cooler years.

While Cabernet Sauvignon reigns supreme here, as it does across much of Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain District also cultivates other Bordeaux varieties like Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Zinfandel, a quintessential Californian grape, finds its place here too. A smattering of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc vines produce white wines, and even rarer varieties like Grüner Veltliner and Marsanne can be found.

Wines from Diamond Mountain District are renowned for their boldness and structure. Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines dominate, offering a symphony of flavors that reflect the region’s unique terroir. These wines are often characterized by their intense fruit flavors, well-integrated tannins, and remarkable aging potential. In cooler years, the wines exhibit exceptional balance and reward those with the patience to cellar them.

In conclusion, the Diamond Mountain District is a hidden gem within Napa Valley. Its rich history, distinctive terroir, and the exceptional wines it produces make it a destination for wine enthusiasts seeking the finest expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon and more. With every bottle, it reveals the timeless allure of Napa Valley’s winemaking tradition.
