Wine Description
K Vintners The Hidden Syrah 2019 is a robust and concentrated wine sourced from the Wahluke Slope AVA. Crafted under Chuck & Charles Van Mackelberg of K Vintners and winemaker Brennon Leighton, this Syrah reveals a bountiful array of ripe black cherry, blackberry and whole and ground peppercorn on the nose. The palate bursts with intense flavors of black currant, wild sage, black plum, fresh mushroom, black raspberry, cigar wrapper and black pepper. Burly and brooding with superb concentration and balance, the wine exudes fine, taught tannins and a beautiful depth and richness of toasted black fruit against notes of leather and dried rose. The vines that produced this extraordinary wine were grown on the older soils of the Northridge Vineyard at the Wahluke Slope and the wine needs time to properly express itself – it’s recommended to mature it for at least two to three years before opening. An impressive Syrah, K Vintners The Hidden Syrah 2019 is truly a special wine that captures the essence of the Wahluke Slope AVA.

Clyde Collins –
Promising with a long future ahead.
Charlie Smith –
Dark chocolate and berries in the bouquet. Juicy with balanced acidity and sweetness. Youthful promise. 92-93.
Renae Thomas –
Disjointed at first, but opened up after a few hours. Dark, inky, and savory.
Gabriel Jenkins –
Best to wait until 2020-2021 to enjoy.
Velma Mccoy –
Great Syrah, fruity and approachable. Deserves better than dill pickle chips. Really, really great.
Craig Williams –
Complex with black fruit, meat, pencil lead, and brine. Smooth, focused, and long dry finish. Hands down wotn – one of the most complete wines ever. Seriously good, ready to drink now.
William Gasaway –
K’s Syrah is a perfect example of what Syrah should be: spectacular color, nose, body, flavor, and finish.
Erica Smith –
Excellent wine with a dark ruby color, medium high viscosity, and nice fruit on the nose. Enjoyed at Holly Hill Inn during the Cassoulett dinner.
Joe Winstead –
92.5. Deep purple. Smoked meat, blackberries, and licorice on the nose. Meaty and mushroom flavor on top of blackberries. Tangy acidity and well-integrated tannins. Interesting wine.
Florence Kuntz –
Appealing young Syrah with earthy notes and dark fruit. Needs 2+ years in the bottle to reach full potential. Enjoyable anytime.
Stephen Yoder –
Excellent Syrah. Peak in 4-6 years.
Lawana Ashburn –
Amazing wine, consistent with previous notes.
Veronica Johnson –
Smooth and well-integrated, excellent with fillet.
Gilberto Sullivan –
Needs more decanting or aging. Huge nose of smoked meat, tar, and violets.
Terry Aiello –
Vintage Wines Ltd.’s 100% Syrah is an excellent choice for lovers of North Rhone-style wines. It has a long, puckerish finish with dusty tannins and ripe berries. Needs through ’22, quite possibly ’23, then easily making its 10th. 99 pts Dunnuck (4/11/19) & 95 Suckling (8/22/19).
Tiffany Lizarraga –
Drack. No notes. Decanted for six hours. Needed it. Great potential, 92++.
Kenneth Kimball –
Great tannins and dark red fruit, pairs perfectly with grilled ribeye. Love Charles Smith’s K Vintner wines.
Phyllis Tasson –
Great Syrah from CS, balanced with typical acidity. Perfect now, but even better aged. Drink or hold.
Mark Davis –
“Tight and rewarding. Needs time.”
Brittany Ohlson –
2016 vintage: dark fruits, earthy, sweet tannins. More approachable now than previous vintages. 2015 is still the favorite.
Estella Allen –
Garnet color. Medium body. Stewed meats and red fruit aroma. Gained weight on day two. Rounded out nicely and easy to drink. Wow factor needs bottle age. Drink now or hold.
Helen Lanier –
Rich and chewy mincemeat with spicy pepper notes. Requires aging.
Mary Wright –
Excellent Syrah vintage with cherry cola, menthol, grilled meat, vanilla, and wheat dough notes. Powerful with dark fruit and striking acidity. Cellar for a decade or drink now. Perfect with a well-seared flank steak and baked potato.
Jane Shaver –
Good, but underwhelming. Needs another year on the shelf. Expected more based on reviews.
Steve Gray –
[Short version: very interesting and exciting, but unusual/disjointed in some ways, and hard to really figure out. Great structure and energy for the style, good now and showing truly great balance- but needs a little time to harmonize. The only thing it’s majorly lacking for me is a “wow” factor- it’s an impressive package but not one I’m fantasizing about having again and again.], This was tricky for me to rate. I’m a big fan of K Vintners Syrah in general and had been looking forward to trying this for a while. I’ve had many of the $30-$50 K Syrahs, but the only other one I’ve had in this price range was a 2015 Cattle King- which showed pretty similarly to this, with surprisingly bright fruit and unusual savory notes, although this was even less predictable, for better and worse. , Nose of cherry syrup and Chambord, not overripe or anything but definitely rich, dark red fruit more than blue/purple/black, maybe not so typical for powerful Syrah. Accented by all sorts of /almost/ overpowering and unusual stemmy/oak tones, evoking cloves, cracked pepper and even…peanut butter (the only other time I got this weird nutty tone was in a 2010 Yarra Yering No. 2 Syrah. It’s interesting, but I really can’t say I enjoy this element, and it’s pretty powerful.) Nose is definitely complex and has some nice lift to it (not “explosive” but certainly expressive). Overall, lacks a truly enticing character for me., Palate is one of the few that I felt was actually /better/ than the nose (more often the other way around for me)- a lot less complex at this stage with mostly fairly ripe raspberry/plum, but shows a truly elegant balance of all components. Excellent acidity for the style, on the high end of medium+ and showing more than enough energy to meet the fruit. The tannins are extremely powerful but beautifully powdery, not at all overbearing, a real miracle of structure. Best of all was a subtle but gorgeous dark oak tone on the finish, brown sugar accompanying the pretty plum fruit. Day 2 saw very little change in any of the previous notes., I really think this needs time, NOT because it’s too harsh or tight right now, but because I think the unusual complexities on the nose will begin to harmonize, and the palate might gain a little more complexity too as the beautiful acidity and tannin keep it structured for a very, very long time. I think it’s telling that many professional and CT reviews are a little vague in how they describe the actual character of the wine right now beyond the clear quality inherent in the overall structure and complexity. With time, it could become seriously beautiful, not just interesting.

Possible rewrite:
Ready to drink with soft tannins, funky nose, balanced strawberry-tea flavor, and decent finish. Well-integrated syrah worth buying more to age.
Jennifer Rivera –
A full-bodied, square, compact wine with good acidity and minimal oak. Hints of blueberries, blackcurrant, red cherries, herbs, and beef stew. Drink 2023-2030. Technical score: 92. Enjoyment score: 90.
Kari Trudeau –
Expressive syrah with black tea, spice, blackberry, and minerals. Deep, lush palate with integrated tannin. Perfect with charbroiled lamb chop.
Janice Walczak –
Flawless syrah, wild fruit explosion, Rhone elegance meets PNW fruitiness.
Ana Nordstrom –
PLCB’s clearance sale of this wine has a no-return policy. It’s baked and store credit is not an option.
Robert Sherrod –
K wines need time to open up, but once they do, they’re perfectly balanced with nice tannins at the end.
Amber Vaccaro –
Favorite wine. Double decant. Red fruits. Meaty and bloody. Killer texture. Long finish. Gorgeous.
Sandy Rivers –
Coravin day 1. PNP day 2. After a year it still tasted great with consistent notes. Aging will add more weight and complexity. 94+.
Lucile Webb –
“Double decant. Red and blue fruits. Orange peel. Baking spice. Not as good as previous vintages. Needs time.”
Evelyn Marte –
Needs decanting for 4 hours. Deep, dark, black fruit with savory flavors of grilled beef, olive tapenade, seaweed, and black pepper. Drink between 2022-2035.
Ronald Swenson –
30 min air needed. Medium ruby, balanced acidity with rich red and black fruits. Excellent Syrah.
Sheila Day –
Improved with aeration, decant and Vinturi for 4 hours.
Bill Cannone –
Balanced dark fruit with a slight heat. Best after a year.
Ross Faulkner –
Dense layered wine with ripe dark and blueberries, bright red fruit and pepper. Needs time.
Jeff Licudine –
Bone dry with bold tannins and full body. Hints of black fruit but dominated by licorice, mocha, and dark chocolate.
Andrew Langenfeld –
I bought quite a bit of this wine simply because it impressed me. I have been tasting it regularly since it became available in 2014 or so. It hasn’t changed a great deal. Its always been soft and fruity and in an open bottle it lasts for days without oxidizing. It’s an unusually good Washington style syrah, but so far it’s shown very little sign of benefiting from age. I’m still hoping. The great thing is that I have not yet seen any quality variation either.
Don Strief –
Dry with no finish or length, possibly heat damaged. Not enjoyable.
Angel Taylor –
Probably one of my favorite varietals right now, so my review might be clouded a bit. , Blue fruit, currants, beef fat and voilet just jumped from the glass and the bottle right after opening. Became a bit subdued and thin after a 4 hour slow ox, only to find its own again after a couple of more hours. Blueberry and raisin started to shine, with just a boatload of minerality and white pepper on the palette. , Paired really well with a 4 hour brined and grilled bone in pork chop with a bowl of red beans, chard and andouille sausage. , Interested to see what this might do with another couple of years in the bottle, but drinking really well right now.
Mary Fineran –
Review: Intense nose of cinnamon, allspice, black cherry, iodine, and wet wood chips. The palate is powerful with black cherry, black plum, minerals, smoked meats, and fat tannins. The finish is long with cherry compote, smoky notes, dried herbs, toast, and chewy oak. A big and well-made wine.
Matthew Lipe –
Elegant Syrah with layered purple fruit.
Cathey Asher –
Smokey, earthy not as fruit forward as others.
Dianna Ward –
Disjointed and funky. Not a good top WA Syrah.
Steven Berkley –
Similar to Domaine de la Thalabert, but more tannic and overall better.
Emma Hsu –
Elegant, linear, and soft with notes of dark cherry and blueberry, but lacks integration and balance, resulting in a slightly sloppy and wilted taste.
Cheryl Valentin –
Blackberry and fresh flower aromas. Bold structure with peppery notes. Great now, better in a couple of years with food.
Willie Eckles –
Good, but not exceptional. Took a while to open and wasn’t as good as the last bottle. No flaws detected. Enjoyable with snacks.
William Bennett –
Recommend decanting. Lots of black fruit, oak, and mocha. Perfect chew with well-integrated black tea tannins. Drink now – 2031.
Sandra Stephens –
well-balanced, feminine elegant wine–medium-bodied, soft, supple, delicate…
Bessie Andrews –
Jammy – bursting with fruit flavors.
Beth Gonzalez –
Great value for money with an impressive nose of smoked herbs and grilled meats. Savory palate with notes of soy, black tea and sweet dark fruits. Lacks tannic grip but overall an excellent wine.
Lynn Jones –
Dry cherry, watermelon, pepper notes, and grippy tannins. Finish adds ginger beer, unripe raspberries, alderwood, and earthy oak.
Walter Jones –
Concentrated and rich with notes of graphite, underbrush, rosemary, and roasted meat. Decant for 2-3 hours to fully enjoy. Hold remaining bottles for 2-3 years.
Mike Clark –
Excellent starting point.
Stuart White –
Faded fruit and softer finish. Savory and mineral driven. Long finish. Better consumed in its youth.
Celeste Putnam –
Notes of smoke, tea, and BBQ. A bit hot.
Robbie Reid –
Great value for money, not overly fruity.
William Rice –
Decanted and drank after 30 minutes. Perfect with filet, BBQ ribs, and Rosmarin potatoes. Dark, medium to full-bodied with blackberries, black cherries, and figs. Luscious and slightly tannic. Good to drink now.
Hugo Skaggs –
PLCB sent damaged wine over 2 years old. No returns accepted.
Judith Wilson –
Soft Syrah, easy-drinking with tea notes and smooth finish. Lacks complexity.
Stacey Chavez –
Washington Syrah with slow legs, 14.5% alcohol. Nose of violets, oak, tobacco, blueberries. Full-bodied, smooth taste with oak, raisins, chocolate, lavender, dark cherries, blackberry. Medium leathery finish with acidity.
Peter Lavelle –
Well balanced wine with a lengthy, elegant, and supple finish. Syrah flavor profile with a touch of sweet dark plum, but slightly inconsistent.
Steven Smith –
Powerful and well-balanced wine with dark fruit, spice, and vanilla mid-palate. Medium to strong tannins and long finish. Great aging potential.
Herman Phillips –
3-4 hour wait rewarded. Nice wine.
John Crouch –
This was disappointing. Flavor profile seemed more like a mediocre Cabernet than a syrah, with cherry and some darker fruit flavors. Short finish, overall just kind of blah. Wouldn’t buy again even at the discounted Costco price.
Paul Scully –
Powerful and bold tannins with balanced notes. Perfect with steak. Black cherry flavor. Ageable for 10+ years.
Thomas Guzman –
Flavors of raspberry, cranberry, and licorice with an earthy and peppery finish. A perfect example of a Southern Rhone wine.
Arlene Leech –
Great mid-weight syrah with blackberry and dark fruit notes and sweet tannins. Ready to drink now, but can last for 3-5 years. Excellent value for money.
Douglas Jacocks –
Needs patience. Dominating tannins, acidity, and alcohol. Fine and firm tannins with strong astringency. Underripe berries, herbs, occasional tobacco. Better with food.
Gwendolyn Albers –
Deep ruby-colored syrah with notes of dark berries, orange, and spice. Medium+ bodied with balanced tannins and finesse. Enjoyable – will try again.
Daniel Sepulveda –
Shy at first, gains meatiness overnight.
JD –
The 2019 Syrah The Hidden comes from the Northridge Vineyard and is another rich, burly wine that needs bottle age. Both red and black fruits, charcoal, smoky oak, and pepper define the bouquet, and it’s full-bodied, has building tannins, and a great finish. I wouldn’t open a bottle for at least 2-3 years.
JS –
Ripe black cherry, blackberry and whole and ground peppercorn on the nose. Full-bodied with fine, taught tannins. There is excellent depth and richness here with toasted black fruit and notes of leather and dried rose. Very well balanced with great complexity and intensity.
