Wine Description
Medium garnet with crimson hues. Intense and evocative aromas of briary black currant, blackberry, blueberry, Satsuma plum, with lifted notes of sage, bay leaf, crushed flowering herbs, black pepper, anise and hints of cedar. The palate is rich and complex with well-defined blackberry, mulberry, red plum and black currant fruit, layered with sage, black pepper and bay leaf, and carried by fine-grained, mature, velvety tannins for an almost endless finish.
100% 105-year-old single-vineyard shiraz grown on the Henschke Mount Edelstone Vineyard in the Eden Valley wine region, managed with organic and biodynamic practices.
The beautiful and historic name Mount Edelstone is a translation from the German Edelstein meaning ‘gemstone’, a reference to small yellow opals once found in the area. The Mount Edelstone Vineyard was planted in 1912 by Ronald Angas, a descendant of George Fife Angas who founded The South Australian Company and played a significant part in the formation and establishment of South Australia. Unusual for its time, the vineyard was planted solely to shiraz. The ancient 500-million-year-old geology in the vineyard has given rise to soils that are deep red-brown clay-loam to clay, resulting in low yields from the dry-grown, ungrafted centenarian vines. First bottled as a single-vineyard wine in 1952 by fourth-generation Cyril Henschke. By the time Cyril purchased the vineyard from Colin Angas in 1974, Mount Edelstone was already well entrenched as one of Australia’s greatest shiraz wines. Crafted by the Henschke family for 65 years now, Mount Edelstone is arguably the longest consecutively-produced, single-vineyard wine in Australia.

David Hicks –
Palate a bit shot at the end if the wine tasting! Dark red. Nose ia chocolate with a touch of something brighter. Smooth mouth feel, smooth plum on middle. Not much spice but a touch of oak. Long finish that lingers
William Steward –
Concentrated & complex Shiraz of great freshness and herbality. Organically and biodynamically farmed 111 year old single vineyard. Wine is aged for 18 months in 86% FR and 14% US oak, 26% new. Pronounced layered aroma of blackberries, blackcurrants, eucalyptus, plums, black pepper, herbal and medicinal notes of sage, bay leaf, meaty and tomato leaf hints. Full body, concentrated and complex intense and fresh flavours of black fruits, herbs, pepper, rich finely grained high tannins, medium acidity, long finish.
WS –
Succulent and complex, with ripe cherry, salted black licorice and a fresh whiff of mint and rosemary. Delivers dark chocolate, baked plum buckle and gunpowder tea flavors that linger on the long, expressive finish.
WA –
Scents of cracked pepper, licorice, mint and resinous herbs mark the nose, backed by black cherries and perhaps a bit of cassis this year, while the palate is medium to full-bodied, silky and streamlined. Although the 2017 Mount Edelstone Vineyard Shiraz doesn’t have the richness and expansiveness of the greatest vintages, it’s impressive in its own way, with terrific energy, length, gentle, soft tannins and herbal complexities for days.
DEC –
Kaleidoscopic, this glorious vintage is terroir translucent, transporting you to the vineyard with its signature aromas of dried sage, Eucalyptus olida (aka Strawberry Gum), wild mint, wattleseed, nutmeg and tinder. Soaring and super-expressive, these scents bring compelling dimension and meld exquisitely on the sweet, juicy plum and bramble palate, with its cocoa nib and earthy hints. Graceful, willowy tannins and mineral acidity make for a long, fluid, markedly perfumed finish. Irresistible already!
JS –
This has quite elegant red plum, raspberry and so much spice in this cooler vintage, together with gentle earthiness, then red plum and such expressive fragrance. Opens up to such primary complexity with air. There’s sleekness to the palate – acidity has thrived in this cooler vintage – and it carries a sense of depth and purpose in terms of fruit expression and is so focused. Long, very fresh finish. This cooler vintage suits Mount Edelstone. Lower yields with good concentration.
