Vintage: 2021

The Bethel Heights Estate Pinot Noir 2021 is a delicate and vibrant wine crafted by renowned winemaker Ben Casteel. It showcases an expressive blend of fruit from the three estate vineyards encompassing forty years of careful vineyard management: Justice, Bethel Heights, and Lewman estate. Grapes grown in the two oldest vineyards bring with them a brooding, earthy complexity, while the youngest vines provide youthful exuberance.

The 2021 vintage encountered mild yet climatically shifting weather conditions with varying sunny and stormy days. Casteel and his winemaking team carefully adjusted their methods to capture the best of these conditions with great success. The result is a wonderfully balanced, albeit complex, pinot noir with fresh and crunchy flavors.

In the glass, the wine presents a deep garnet color. On the nose, aromas of redcurrant, cherry drops, and citrus rind are complemented with floral and mineral notes. On the palate, the wine reveals a medium-bodied structure with medium-grained tannins and zingy acidity. Flavors of raspberry and red plum are catchy and lingering on the vibrant finish.

This estate Pinot Noir has been rated well by both James Suckling and Wine Spectator, with 94 and 93 points respectively. It has a great potential for cellaring with up to ten years, but is just as delightful when enjoyed now. It is also an environmentally-friendly addition to any wine collection, certified sustainable by LIVE and Salmon Safe. In conclusion, the 2021 Bethel Heights Estate Pinot Noir is one of the best releases from Casteel, and a great example of Oregon’s cool-climate winemaking talent.

57 reviews for Bethel Heights Vineyard Estate Pinot Noir 2021

  1. Barbara Wright

King salmon paired perfectly with this wine. Decanted for 45 minutes, initially closed but opened up with cherry fruit. Good color and body. Stocking up on more.

  2. Nicole Grimm

Balanced cherry flavor pairs well with King Salmon. Lovely. Glad to have more.

  3. Viola Neely

Bethel Heights Vineyard: Great value for solid Pinot.

  4. Valerie Gross

Bethel Heights Vineyard’s 2013 Pinot is a clean and fresh wine with great depth of character, despite the wet weather. Highly recommended.

  5. Keith Sawyer

Nice wine with black cherry, currant, plum, cranberry notes and hints of rosebush on the nose. Simple with not enough layers, needs more time in bottle.

  6. Rosemary Sizemore

2013 vintage better than 2012. Good pinot but lacks nuance, a bit simple and in-your-face. Drinkable without decanting.

  7. Lorenzo Bailey

Dry and fresh with soft cherry, berry and floral notes. Hints of baking spice on the palate. 3/5.

  8. Eric Navarro

Hot and acidic with strawberries and spice on the nose. Typical Pinot with substantial fruit but not complex.

  9. Joseph Watkins

Yes, this wine lives up to the hype. Great QPR. Aromas, flavors, color depth, and structure all excellent. Will evolve over 4-5 years. BH nailed it.

  10. Monica Branch

Complex and fruity with integrated mineral and earth. Ready to drink now but will evolve nicely over the years.

  11. Leah Siebert

Dark cherry with earthy undertones, medium-bodied with good acidity and structure. Flavors of cherry, black raspberry, warm spices, and earth. 89+ pts.

  12. Etta Keeton

Tasting notes: Red fruit and brown spice on the nose. Flavors lean towards red berries and pomegranate with good acidity but lacking depth.

  13. Dexter Clark

Review: Bright ruby color, cherry, blackberry, and floral notes on the nose. Palate of red berries, raspberry, and red licorice with gentle minerality. Medium weight, elegant. Great showing for a supposedly off vintage. Drink now.

  14. Dorothy Sowder

Delicate pinot with earthy, fruity aroma. Sweet cherries and raspberries on a solid finish. Great for pinot purists.

  15. Eva Brown

Oregon tasting at Coopers’ Hall, Devonshire Square: Darker with a mineral taste and fresh finish. 3+.

  16. Jeffrey Smith

Tart fruit and earthy tones dominate this interesting old world wine with medium expressiveness.

  17. Nelly Clark

Balanced and youthful wine. Good now with aeration but benefits from aging. B/B+ grade, great value at $21.

  18. Elane Alesci

Oregon Wine Geek Week Grand Tasting had a decent nose and perfume, but the palate was a bit tight and angular. Improved when tasted again 2 days later.

  19. Earl Wirth

    Excellent.

  20. Calvin Ross

Deep cherry and blackberry flavors with hints of forest floor and white pepper. Touch of vanilla from new oak. Enjoyable.

  21. Laura Barrette

    Very well-structured.

  22. Luis Martinez

Great wine – Tim Fish, Wine Spectator.

  23. Juanita Haffner

Pleasant, light and tart with berry notes.

  24. Laura Myers

Young, chewy, smooth with dark fruit notes and good value.

  25. Shavonne Bambacigno

“Drink now, age for a few years. Lovely color, flavors with room to grow.”

  26. Anthony Alicea

Pinot Noirs from Vintage Wines Ltd. have ripe berries with an herbaceousness and slightly bitterish finish with a tangy sweetness to the dusty tannins. Needs 12-18 mos, then drinking for 3-4 yrs more. 93 pts ea WS & Suckling, 92 & “Editors’ Choice” WE @ $32, and 91 WA.

  27. Edward Janczewski

Pinot in the City (Chicago, IL) – Bright and energetic with sneaky good length.

  28. Eleni Severance

Balanced Oregon PN with cherry and earthy tea notes.

  29. Isaias Hood

Pinot Noir from the oldest vineyard in Eola-Emity Hills. Aged for 10 months in French oak. Unpretentious purity. Wine Tally score: 8/10.

  30. Stacy Reynolds

Nice acidity, under ripe fruit. Good for an entry level Ella-amity wine.

  31. Josephine Karow

National NYC’s wine was decent, with fruit and earthy tones, but served too warm and slightly acidic.

  32. Kevin Kazunas

Young with good bones for improving. Black cherry, dark berry, earth, forest floor, tea, some vanilla oak notes on nose. Cherry, earth, some spice, vanilla on palate. Medium body, good acid, noticeable, but fine tannins.

  33. Heidi Betts

A medium-bodied Pinot with dark cherry, black tea, and earthy notes. Good acidity, well-integrated alcohol, and rustic tannins. Lacks charm for now, but may improve in the future. Drink 2022-2027.

  34. Francis Shilkuski

Burgundian style, with blackberries, tobacco, and cinnamon aromas. Palate has dark fruit and layered flavors with silky tannins. Stewed cherry with excellent acidity. A homerun wine.

  35. Jeff Lynch

Great value Oregon Pinot. Mild fruit, long finish, easy to drink.

  36. Joseph Diaz

Pure red fruit with a subtle nose. The palate has a bit of heat and woody/earthy notes.

  37. Angela Aslanian

Lively and fresh with a bit of medicinal funk.

  38. Larry Ashmore

Decent value New World pinot. Easy, ripe, plush. Screwcap is ideal for 375ml splits.

  39. Rita Williams

Improved from previous bottle with bright fruit and added complexity. Simple, easy-going Pinot with soft tannins and mild acidity. Enjoyable and in a good spot.

  40. Glenda Portwood

Medium-bodied with soft tannins and notes of red fruit.

  41. Hugh Flores

Purple color, dark cherry fruit, forest floor, baking spice. Good acidity, fine-grained tannins, great structure to age. Best 6-8 years, may improve with age. Successful 2019.

  42. Barry Payne

    “Ready to drink.”

  43. Patricia Day

New Zealand-like with pleasant green notes on the nose and a hint of pepper on the palate.

  44. Eric Gerula

Fruit-driven, lacking earth. Will improve in a year or two.

  45. Anita Lewter

    Great wine, 8/10.

  46. Ginger Torres

Review: OPN – PnP. Black cherry, dark berry, forest floor, black tea, vanilla oak. Medium body, medium acidity, fine tannins. Exuberant fruit. Ages well.

  47. John Stewart

Oregon Pinot with a screw top. Fresh taste, 13.3% ABV, 88-89 rating.

  48. Heather Wilenkin

BH Estate wines are impeccably balanced with earthy and sweet spice notes. Perfectly paired with salmon or non-spicy Asian cuisine. A must-buy at only $30.

  49. Manuela Los

Thin and lackluster, possibly due to a bad bottle. Other bottles were only slightly better.

  50. Ione Chandler

Great value Pinot with balanced structure, soft tannins, and dark fruit notes.

  51. Meagan Macias

Soft crimson color with fragrant floral aroma. Ruby red cherry and ripe plum flavors with light leather notes. Impressive finish. Pair with sharp provolone and figs appetizer and Parmesan orzo entree.

  52. Rachel Hutnak

Aromas of black cherry fruit, tea notes, spice and earthiness. Medium body, medium acid, drying tannins in the finish. Good structure to age. Best between 2024 and 2029.

  53. Lucille Lee

Great value, dark fruit notes with hints of cinnamon, licorice and black tar. Evolves nicely over 3-4 years.

  54. Jean Wethje

This wine was the worst of our 3-bottle 2021 Willamette tasting. It had rubbery, sulfuric burnt matchstick aromas on the nose and harsh tones.

  55. John Gomez

Young and immediately drinkable wine with pure red fruit flavors and minimal earthiness. Not very complex but elegant and restrained.

  56. WS

Sleek and handsomely structured, with expressive raspberry and red plum flavors laced with black tea, forest floor and hints of mineral, building tension toward medium-grained tannins. Drink now through 2031.

  57. Alexander Intrieri

Spicy nose, cherry fruit, dark tones, bitter oak notes – not a favorite.

Aromas of redcurrants and cherry drops with citrus rind, lilac and crushed stones. Medium-bodied, fresh and crunchy, with chalky tannins and vivid acidity. Bright, blue-fruited finish. A little chewy at the end. Drink or hold.
