Goldeneye Description
Nestled in the cool-climate embrace of Anderson Valley, Goldeneye Winery stands as a pioneer in California winemaking, particularly renowned for its dedication to crafting exceptional Pinot Noir. The winery’s roots trace back to 1990 when Dan and Margaret Duckhorn, after fifteen years of producing world-class Bordeaux-varietal wines, embarked on a journey fueled by their growing love for Pinot Noir.
The search for the ideal winegrowing region led them to Anderson Valley, where they believed the cool-climate edges of modern California viticulture would allow Pinot Noir to express varietal purity and a distinct sense of place. Goldeneye Winery officially opened its doors in 1996, seizing an 80-acre ranch at the headwaters of the Navarro River. This inaugural estate, named Confluence Vineyard, possessed ideal clay soils and a marine-influenced climate, laying the foundation for world-class Pinot Noir production.
The winery’s commitment to cultivating their estate program saw the planting of the first vines at Confluence Vineyard in 1997, marking the beginning of a long-term endeavor. The careful growth of their estate program continued, and in 2000, after a decade of planning and experimentation, Goldeneye released its debut Pinot Noir to widespread acclaim.
Expanding their viticultural footprint, Goldeneye acquired Gowan Creek, a 70-acre vineyard, in the same year. This acquisition reinforced their dedication to developing a world-class estate program. In 2003, The Narrows Vineyard, situated on a historic mountain ranch at the northernmost tip of the valley, joined the Goldeneye family. Known for its mature Pinot Noir vines and extreme growing conditions influenced by cooling marine influences, The Narrows added complexity and intensity to Goldeneye’s wine portfolio.
A decade later, Goldeneye celebrated its 10th harvest in Anderson Valley by producing a limited-edition anniversary bottling named Ten Degrees. This wine, crafted from the ten finest barrels of Pinot Noir, paid homage to the temperature variance of up to 10 degrees across their estate vineyards.
In 2008, the winery embarked on a new chapter with the groundbreaking ceremony for a state-of-the-art Pinot Noir winery at Gowan Creek Vineyard. The Gowan Creek Winery, completed in 2009, showcased cutting-edge, energy-efficient, and environmentally conscious design, earning LEED Gold certification in 2010.
Goldeneye’s commitment to sustainability and excellence extended to its winemaking team. In 2019, Kristen McMahan joined the ranks, quickly rising from enologist to assistant winemaker to winemaker. Kristen’s work ethic, palate, and scientific acumen propelled her to the forefront of Goldeneye’s winemaking legacy.
From the vibrant red fruit purity of Confluence Vineyard wines to the voluptuous depth and blue-fruit complexity of Gowan Creek, and the terroir-driven rusticity of The Narrows Vineyard, Goldeneye’s wines reflect the beauty, sophistication, and profound sense of place that define Anderson Valley’s winemaking excellence. Goldeneye Winery continues to shape the landscape of California winemaking, embracing the legacy of its founders while pushing the boundaries of Pinot Noir craftsmanship in the cool embrace of Anderson Valley.
