Orin Swift Papillon Napa Valley 2021, masterfully crafted by renowned winemaker Dave Phinney, is a remarkable testament to the art of blending Bordeaux-style varietals. This exquisite red wine, composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, has garnered critical acclaim, including an impressive 93 points from Wine Advocate.

Upon pouring, the Orin Swift Papillon reveals a captivating dark crimson hue with flashes of neon purple and a ruby rim, indicative of its depth and complexity. The wine’s tears move slowly down the glass, hinting at its rich texture. Aromatically, the Papillon wine opens with an inviting bouquet of boysenberry jam, complemented by the delicate floral notes of violets. The complexity deepens with undercurrents of chocolate-covered blueberry, while nuances of Cara Cara rind, graphite, and brioche add an intriguing layer of sophistication.

The palate experience of this Papillon red wine is equally impressive. The entry and mid-palate are characterized by a brightness that persists throughout, balanced by a considerable weight that speaks to its structure. Flavors of cassis and blackberry dominate, interwoven with baking spices that add warmth and depth. The Orin Swift Papillon’s texture is enveloping, featuring chalky, drying tannins that contribute to its distinguished mouthfeel.

Critically acclaimed for its bold cherry and cassis aromas and a full-bodied, velvety palate, the 2021 Papillon Red Wine finishes with a long, zestful tail. The wine’s 13 months maturation in French oak, 44% of which is new, imparts a subtle, refined oak character that complements its fruit-forward profile.

In summary, the Orin Swift Papillon Napa Valley 2021 is a brilliant expression of Napa Valley’s capability to produce Bordeaux-style blends. Its harmonious combination of varietals, expert winemaking, and careful aging results in a red wine that is not just a delight to the senses but also a reflection of the high standards and creative vision of Orin Swift Cellars.

Still not bottled at the time I tasted it, the 2021 Papillon Red Wine is a five-variety Bordeaux blend (Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot) that spends 13 months in 44% new oak. While not that complex, it does offer up bold cherry and cassis aromas on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied and velvety, with a long, almost zesty finish. Best After 2024
