The Isole e Olena Cepparello 2020 is a total game-changer in the world of wine, thanks to Paolo de Marchi. This guy’s a wine wizard, and his latest creation is like nothing else. It’s made entirely from the best Sangiovese grapes of 2020 and has been chilling in French oak barrels, showing just how serious they are about making top-notch wine. Since around 1993, this wine has just been getting better and better, and a lot of that is thanks to their vineyards in Barberino Val d’Elsa, right in the prime zone of Chianti Classico, Italy. It’s a beautiful spot that’s perfect for growing grapes.

When you pour a glass of this wine, you’re hit with this amazing bright ruby color that just looks inviting. It’s got this wild mix of smells that’ll take you from sweet flowers to fresh berries with a bit of spice thrown in. Tasting it is another adventure. It’s got layers of flavors, like red cherries and a touch of earthiness, all balanced out with this deep, savory taste and smooth tannins that are typical for a Sangiovese from Toscana in 2020.

Critics can’t get enough of it. It’s been praised left and right for being rich and full of flavors like cherry, strawberry, and Tuscan herbs. It’s a wine that’s expected to just get better with age, peaking from 2025 to 2045. Wine Spectator even gave it a 96 out of 100! Paolo De Marchi really outdid himself with this one, especially since he’s thinking about retiring. It’s like his goodbye letter, packed with flavors of dark plum, redcurrant, and a bunch of other stuff, all at a perfect 13.5% alcohol.

Other wine experts, like Decanter and James Suckling, say it’s still got a lot of room to grow, pointing out its bright cherry taste and how it finishes with a strong, yet balanced, touch. Vinous is all about its bold character and the deep flavors, from dark fruit to a bit of herbal and floral action, calling it a standout representation of the 2020 vintage.

When you stack it up against the 2019 version, the 2020 Cepparello is just on another level with its refined taste and complexity. It’s a shining example of how the winery keeps pushing the boundaries, mixing old-school techniques with new ideas right in the heart of Italy. For anyone who’s into wine, the Isole e Olena Cepparello 2020 is like a sneak peek into the future of Italian winemaking.

    Is Cepparello a Chianti?

In 1980, Paolo de Marchi introduced his signature creation, Cepparello, a wine crafted exclusively from Sangiovese grapes. This innovative approach marked Cepparello as a "Super Tuscan," diverging from the conventional Chianti Classico norms which mandate the inclusion of a white grape variety in the blend.

What is the meaning of Isole e Olena?

In the 1950s, the De Marchi family acquired and merged two neighboring estates, 'Isole' and 'Olena', which both have histories spanning several centuries, leading to the creation of the name 'Isole e Olena'. This estate is nestled in the central area of the Chianti Classico region, positioned equidistantly between Siena and Florence.

    WS 96
    Wine Spectator
Expressive and sumptuous from the get-go, this red features cherry, strawberry, rose, orange peel, mineral and Tuscan herb aromas and flavors. Sangiovese. Best from 2025 through 2045. 4,800 cases made, 800 cases imported.
    WA 96
    Wine Advocate
Supple and smooth, the 2020 Cepparello brings Sangiovese to soaring heights in a manner only Paolo De Marchi can manage. This is his second to last vintage before he would retire and sell this historic estate. The wine opens to medium to full-bodied concentration with dark plum and redcurrant. Those cede to sweet spice, earth, crushed stone, rusty nail and candied orange peel. Give the wine more time to flesh out with cellar age. It registers a powerful 15% alcohol content.
    DEC 93
    Decanter
A long, hot summer with good day and nighttime temperature variations led to an even ripening. Balsamic and medicinal tones introduce a bright, chewy cherry palate with wood and spice notes. Earth and pomegranate touches emerge towards the finish, framed by ripe, grippy tannins and good acidity. Still very youthful, it will improve with age but seems to lack a little bit of the intensity seen in the 2019.

    James Suckling
Attractive red and dark berries with dried flowers, nutmeg and cocoa powder. Dried orange peel and wet earth, too. Medium- to full-bodied, toned and steady with fine-grained tannins that are slightly chalky. Polished and even with a lingering finish. Try after 2026.
    VIN 97
    Vinous
The 2020 Cepparello is dense, powerful and soaring in intensity. A dark, almost somber Cepparello, the 2020 possesses remarkable depth from start to finish. Black cherry, plum, gravel, dried herbs and lavender build in a vivid, stunningly beautiful Cepparello that hits all the right notes.

    Paolo de Marchi

Paolo De Marchi's journey in the wine world is a narrative of vision, passion, and unwavering dedication to the craft of winemaking. Born into a family with roots in Piedmont, Italy, De Marchi's path would eventually lead him to Tuscany, where he would redefine the potential of Sangiovese grapes and the region's winemaking legacy. The De Marchi family, having small vineyards in the north of Piedmont, ventured southward in 1956 when Paolo's father acquired the Isole e Olena estate, encompassing two once-abandoned hamlets and their vineyards. This move laid the groundwork for what would become a monumental chapter in Italian viticulture, spearheaded by Paolo De Marchi himself.
