Crafted by the esteemed winemaker Veronique Boss-Drouhin, Domaine Drouhin Vaudon Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2020 is a testament to the rich history and tradition of the region. Situated between Valmur and Blanchot, it is the largest and most renowned Grand Cru, boasting a generous and powerful character due to its ideal exposure.

As one of the cradles of Chablis, this exceptional wine holds a fascinating story. The term “Les Clos” likely refers to the wall that once enclosed the vineyard, though it no longer stands today. Devastated by the phylloxera disease in the late 19th Century, the vineyard was resurrected in the 1960s by Robert Drouhin, one of the visionary proprietors from Beaune.

The unique soil, composed of Kimmeridgian limestone filled with ancient marine fossils, contributes to the wine’s distinct flavor, providing a profound connection to its terroir. The dedication to organic and biodynamic viticulture across the 93-hectare estate at Maison Joseph Drouhin reveals the winery’s commitment to respecting the soil, vines, and the environment.

Upon tasting, the Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2020 captivates the senses. Its pale gold-yellow color, tinged with green, is a prelude to the refined and delightful nose, reminiscent of lily, honey, and preserved lemon. The palate is greeted with an astonishing depth and velvety sensation, interwoven with delicate marine nuances. The wine leaves a lasting impression with its intensity and long aftertaste.

As it ages, this grand cru evolves into an even more complex and subtle delight, unfolding additional layers of intricate aromas. It stands as a wine of unparalleled finesse, showcasing the true essence of Chablis terroir.

In the winemaking process, the grapes are carefully hand-harvested in open-work crates, ensuring the utmost quality. Slow pressing of the whole bunch in a pneumatic press separates the juice, with special care given to the juice from the last press. Aging takes place in oak barrels of 500 liters, avoiding the use of new barrels, which allows the wine to develop gracefully over 12 to 15 months.

Renowned wine critic Jasper Morris awards this wine an impressive 94 points, praising its pale color and rich, waxy nose, supported by underlying minerals. The wine displays a beautiful balance between fleshiness and acidity, showcasing the true essence of the vintage.

Drouhin Vaudon Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2020 is an exceptional expression of the terroir and the winemaker’s dedication to producing wines of the highest quality, truly embodying the finesse and elegance that Chablis is known for.

2 reviews for Drouhin Vaudon Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2020

    1. David Reid

Drouhin-Vaudon’s 2020 Clos impresses critics but lacks typicity, feels flabby with dominant wood, and showcases apple, spice, and phenolic notes.

    2. Gladys Wagner

Consistent, beautiful bottles. Near their peak. Sacrificed freshness for evolution. Mineral, cold stone fruit, citrus, light flint, well-managed oak. Very pretty wine, 92-93. Would like to try it older, but unsure about risking our own bottles.

Pale colour. The nose has a waxy richness sitting on top of the minerals, richer than usual. Flesh apparent, softer and fatter but then comes back to the fruit it should have and a useful thread of acidity.
