Domaine Drouhin Vaudon Description
Nestled in the picturesque region of Chablis, France, Domaine Drouhin Vaudon stands as a testament to the artistry of winemaking. Established by Robert Drouhin in the 1960s, this esteemed wine producer has carved a prominent place in the heart of wine enthusiasts worldwide.
Situated in the northeastern part of France, Domaine Drouhin Vaudon is part of the renowned Burgundy producer and négociant house, Joseph Drouhin. The estate boasts an impressive expanse of vineyards spanning almost four hectares in the grand cru vineyards Vaudésir, Les Clos, Les Preuses, and Bougros. Additionally, they tend to seven hectares of Chablis Premier Cru vineyards and a substantial 68 hectares of village-level Chablis land on both sides of the serene Serein River.
What sets Domaine Drouhin Vaudon apart is its commitment to organic and biodynamic practices. Since 1990, their vineyards have been cultivated using organic methods, and in 1999, they transitioned to biodynamic principles, making it one of the largest biodynamic estates in Chablis. Such conscientious cultivation results in wines that truly reflect the essence of their terroir.
The winery is renowned for its exquisite range of Chardonnay wines, spanning from Petit Chablis to Chablis Grand Cru. Their wines reflect the classic Kimmeridgian soil of the region, a harmonious blend of limestone, clay, and fossilized oyster shells. This unique combination lends a distinct character to their wines, making them an embodiment of Chablis’ identity.
To preserve the purity of the grapes, Drouhin Vaudon harvests their fruit at yields 20 percent below the authorized levels. The grand cru and some premier cru grapes undergo a gentle fermentation and aging process in old French oak barrels, lasting up to 12 months. Meanwhile, the village wines undergo fermentation and aging in stainless steel for up to eight months, ensuring a delightful freshness in each sip.
Visiting Domaine Drouhin Vaudon is a truly enriching experience. The winery is housed in a historic 18th-century watermill, providing an enchanting backdrop to the winemaking process.
