Another stunning Syrah from Cayuse, the 2020 En Cerise Vineyard is made from 100% Syrah that is aged for 18 months in 15-20% new French oak barrels. Blue plum, Spanish olives, smoked brisket, and dried white grapefruit zest combine perfectly on the palate alongside that phenomenal stoney minerality that is always present in these wines. Tannins are silky smooth and merge well with the nearly perfect levels of acidity. Highly recommended

This is meaty, with ripe dark berries, plum skins, smoked bacon, cocoa and ground spiced and pepper. Medium- to full-bodied with firm, chalky tannins and a polished texture, with crushed-stone minerality and dried orange peel. Lengthy and persistent, with a savory finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

A stunning wine from a tough vintage, the 2020 En Cerise Vineyard Syrah is drinking beautifully right now. Red currants, copious minerals, kumquat zest, Nori and pulled pork flavors combine with stony accents on the palate. Finishing long with bright red fruits and citrus accents, this comes off very clean, with no rough edges. Enjoy now and over the next five plus years.

Cayuse Vineyards Sleeping Vines
Situated in the enchanting Walla Walla Valley on the border of Oregon and Washington, Cayuse Vineyards has carved a niche for itself as a distinguished wine producer. Founded in 1997 by Christophe Baron, hailing from a Champagne-making lineage near Charly-sur-Marne, Cayuse embraces the essence of Rhône grape varieties, with a spotlight on the illustrious Syrah. Nestled within the nascent Rocks District of Milton-Freewater AVA, Cayuse's vineyards exclusively grace Oregon's soil. However, its wines bear the Walla Walla AVA label, straddling the two neighboring states. Over 60 acres of estate-grown fruit span Cayuse's five vineyards, all planted within this rocky terrain. The vineyard roots initially self-rooted, but in 2000, grafted vines were introduced to combat... Read More
Syrah, a dark-skinned red grape, has earned its place in the wine world as a producer of full-bodied wines boasting robust fruit flavors. While its origins have stirred debates, the northern Rhône Valley of eastern France is indisputably its modern viticultural home. Additionally, in Australia, Syrah reigns supreme and is often known as Shiraz, gaining a distinct personality in this land down under. One of the defining features of Syrah is its adaptability to various viticultural regions across the globe. It flourishes in temperate to warm climates, where it can manifest its true potential. The climatic conditions and soil profiles of these regions play a crucial role in nurturing this grape variety. Syrah wines emanate a captivating bouquet. In their youth, they can be quite... Winemaker of Cayuse Syrah En Cerise Vineyard 2020

Christophe Baron

Renowned winemaker Christophe Baron's journey reads like a serendipitous tale of fate and terroir. Hailing from Champagne, Baron's course was set for Oregon's Pinot Noir until a visit to Walla Walla Valley redefined his destiny. Entranced by a distinct stony terroir, now part of the Rocks District of Milton-Freewater AVA, he founded Cayuse in 1996, cultivating it from a modest 5 acres to an impressive 45. From this basalt cobblestone soil reminiscent of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Baron crafts wines exuding minerality and earthiness. Notably, his Bionic Frog 2007, an eloquent Syrah aged in French oak, radiates black olive and salt nuances, a testament to his vine-soil love affair.

Nestled in the southeastern corner of Washington state, extending gracefully into Oregon, the Walla Walla Valley AVA stands as a testament to the fusion of geography and passion that defines great winemaking regions. This picturesque valley cradles vineyards on both sides of the border, flourishing amidst the hills that embrace the meandering waters of the Walla Walla River, a tributary of the Columbia River. Walla Walla's vinous journey is a tale of revival and innovation. It traces back to the 1850s when settlers, captivated by the region's potential, planted the first vines. However, the Idaho Gold Rush and the... Read More
