    1. JD

The 2019 Armada comes from a higher density planting just beside the estate, and it’s always a more dense, backward wine. Darker, black fruits, smoked meat, ground pepper, iron, and just subtle bloody, meaty nuances emerge from this beauty, and it’s medium to full-bodied on the palate, with building, firm tannins, wonderfully integrated acidity, and a great finish that makes you salivate due to its sense of salinity and minerality. It needs plenty of air if drinking any time soon but is another tour de force in Rocks Syrah! It has 20-25 years of prime drinking ahead of it.

    2. JS

A lovely nose of plum, gravel and sweet tobacco. Wonderfully balanced and supple on the palate. Medium-to full-bodied with gentle tannins. Cool profile. Rather graceful expressions of red fruit and cocoa. So charming. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

    3. OB

A vibrant wine that shows great verve and concentration from this slightly cooler vintage. Right away the nose is very alluring with soy sauce, forest floor, white truffle and Mandarin orange rind with red cherry candy… With loads of mouth-watering acidity, this is exceedingly difficult to put down. Concentrated red and dark fruits parade with stony minerals, and suggestions of white pepper dusted bacon on the palate. Complex and delicious, this is one of the great wines made in 2019. Drink 2022-2032.

Distinctive and fragrant, with dynamic blueberry and huckleberry flavors accentuated by smoky meat, black olive and espresso notes as this expands toward refined tannins.

The aromas are fruit forward for this area and producer, with notes of plum and red fruit, along with olive, peat, sea salt and spice. Medium-bodied, textured flavors follow, with spice notes lifting the finish.

Rich, juicy and lush with a ripe dark red and black-fruited core of fruit, the 2019 Syrah Armada Vineyard offers dusty purple flowers and savory elements with notions of smoked meat. Medium to full-bodied, the Syrah is firm, focused and refined while offering wonderful savory and umami essences as the generous wine gains in complexity. Still firm and with a taut mineral tension, the wine subsides with a spicy and lingering finish that will benefit from a couple more years of bottle aging to release its tight grip. Be patient and give it time.

The 2019 Syrah Armada Vineyard is dark and woodsy in the glass, with brambly wild berries and smoky herbal tones giving way to ash, olive brine and seared meats. This is a powerhouse, with dense textures ushering in a wave of dark mineral-inflected fruits and savory spice, yet balance is maintained by a core of saline-infused acidity. There’s an abundance of energy here, yet also grippy tannins, creating a youthfully chewy sensation as the Armada finishes structured yet surprisingly fresh. Cellaring will be required, yet also appreciated, once the 2019 awakens from its youthful slumber.

    Christophe Baron

Christophe Baron, a visionary winemaker with roots in Champagne, France, has carved a niche in the Walla Walla Valley, Washington, transforming his passion into a diverse array of exceptional wines. His journey, which began with an intended focus on Oregon's Pinot Noir, took an unexpected turn upon his discovery of the unique, stony terrain in the Rocks District of Milton-Freewater AVA. In 1996, this led to the establishment of Cayuse Vineyards, which he nurtured from a humble 5-acre beginning to an expansive 45-acre estate.
