Crafted in the heart of Rioja, Spain, by the renowned Bodegas Muga Rioja Reserva 2019 is a testament to the winery’s dedication to traditional winemaking techniques while embracing modern nuances. This exquisite blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha Tinta, Mazuelo, and Graciano grapes flourishes on the calcareous clay soils of the tertiary era, lending the wine its distinctive character. Under the meticulous guidance of the winery’s skilled winemaker and consulting winemaker, whose names are synonymous with quality and craftsmanship, this vintage is a celebration of the terroir’s richness.

The vinification process begins with manual harvesting, followed by fermentation in wooden vats under controlled temperatures. The wine matures for 24 months in casks crafted in Bodegas Muga’s own cooper’s workshop, utilizing wood sourced 80% from French oak and 20% American. This meticulous aging process is complemented by fining with fresh egg whites before the wine spends a minimum of 12 months in the bottle cellar, enhancing its complexity and finesse.

The 2019 Bodegas Muga Rioja Reserva captivates with its bright ruby-red color, medium depth, and a garnet-tinged rim. Its bouquet is a complex symphony of wild forest fruits, notably blackberries and blueberries, interwoven with delicate hints of spices. The palate is greeted with a long, elegant, and wonderfully balanced taste. The integration of sharp acidity and soft tannins crafts a harmonious experience, culminating in a fruit-filled, prolonged finish. This wine’s impeccable structure and balance promise excellent aging potential.

The Bodegas Muga Rioja Reserva 2019 is versatile, making it an exceptional companion to a wide range of dishes. It perfectly complements the richness of a ribeye steak, the varied flavors of charcuterie, and the hearty warmth of casseroles, elevating each meal to a gastronomic delight.

Critical acclaims have lavished praise on this vintage, highlighting its exceptional quality and character. Wine Enthusiast awarded it 92 points, captivated by its deep hue, complex bouquet of black plum, cinnamon stick, and citrus zest, and the velvety tannins enveloping flavors of black cherry, pomegranate, milk chocolate, violet, caramel, and eucalyptus, leaving a lasting floral note.

Wine Advocate, with a 94-point rating, emphasizes the wine’s balance, nuance, and complexity. The 2019 vintage, muga rioja wine, emerging from a dry and warm year with low yields, delivers concentrated wines. The winery’s strategic approach to oak aging, utilizing younger barrels for shorter periods, is lauded for enhancing the wine’s inherent qualities, embodying the essence of both Muga and Rioja.

James Suckling also awards 94 points, admiring the wine’s structured and linear profile. The creamy, fine-tannined backbone, alongside notes of graphite, cherry, plum, and black truffle, crafts a medium-bodied, racy, and beautiful expression of the region.

The Bodegas Muga Rioja Reserva 2019 is not only a reflection of its terroir but also a tribute to the winery’s commitment to excellence. Its critical acclaims underscore its position as a standout wine, promising an unforgettable tasting experience.

Is Bodegas Muga a good wine?

Bodegas Muga is renowned for producing high-quality wines with a deep respect for tradition and terroir. Their wines, especially the Rioja Reserva, are celebrated for their complexity, balance, and aging potential, making them a favored choice among wine enthusiasts and critics alike.

Who owns Bodegas Muga?

Bodegas Muga is owned by the Muga family. The winery, located in the Rioja region of Spain, has been family-owned since its founding in 1932. The Muga family is deeply involved in all aspects of the winery's operations, from vineyard management to winemaking, ensuring the high quality and tradition for which their wines are known.

Is Muga Rioja sweet?

Muga Rioja, particularly the Reserva and other red wines produced by Bodegas Muga, are not considered sweet. They are primarily dry wines, characterized by their balance of acidity, tannins, and alcohol, with a focus on the expression of fruit, terroir, and nuanced flavors developed through aging. While there may be a perception of fruitiness or a slight richness due to the grape varieties used and the aging process, these qualities do not equate to sweetness in the sugar content sense. Muga's wines are crafted to showcase the complexity and elegance of traditional Rioja wines, which are typically dry.

Wine Enthusiast
This deep-hued wine has a bouquet of black plum, cinnamon stick and citrus zest. Black cherry, pomegranate, milk chocolate, violet, caramel and eucalyptus flavors are wrapped in a sheath of velvety tannins that endure on the tongue and gums with a light floral note.

Wine Advocate
The 2019 Reserva, sold as Crianza in Spain, comes from a dry and warm year with low yields and concentrated wines. The grapes from the Haro zone, the four from Rioja, Tempranillo, Garnacha Tinta, Mazuelo and Graciano fermented destemmed and lightly crushed in oak vats with indigenous yeasts, and 80% of the volume matured in French oak and the rest in Centro European and American oak, 20% of them new, for 22 months, during which time the wine was racked every eight to nine months. This is serious and young but balanced, nuanced and complex. They are shortening the time in oak, as they feel they have better and younger barrels and think the wines need less time in oak and more time in bottle. This is very Muga, very Rioja and very good.

James Suckling
This is a structured and linear Muga Reserva with a creamy and fine-tannined backbone and graphite, cherry, plum and black-truffle character. Medium-bodied, racy and beautiful
