Stephanie Pope Description
Stephanie Pope’s journey into the world of winemaking is a narrative of passion, education, and serendipity, illustrating how diverse experiences can lead to fulfilling a professional destiny in crafting exceptional wines. A graduate with a B.S. degree in Viticulture & Enology from the prestigious University of California, Davis, in 2004, Stephanie’s academic foundation laid the groundwork for a blossoming career that spans continents and varietals, marked by a commitment to quality and innovation.
Upon completing her studies, Stephanie immersed herself in the practical aspects of winemaking through internships, a step that would shape her career and personal life in profound ways. Her initial foray into the wine industry was with Trefethen Vineyards & Winery in the Napa Valley, a region known for its rich winemaking heritage and diverse microclimates. Seeking to broaden her horizons, she then ventured to the Marlborough region of New Zealand, a land celebrated for its Sauvignon Blanc. While at Whitehaven Wine Co., Stephanie not only honed her skills in crafting wines with distinct character but also met her future husband, intertwining her love for wine with her personal journey.
Returning to Trefethen in mid-2005 as a lab technician, Stephanie’s dedication and skillset quickly became apparent. Her role involved meticulous attention to detail and a deep understanding of the scientific aspects of winemaking, laying the foundation for her future success. The following year, she joined Charles Krug Winery, further solidifying her expertise and reputation in the industry. Her proficiency and passion did not go unnoticed, as she was promoted to assistant winemaker after just a year, a testament to her exceptional talent and work ethic.
In 2008, Stephanie’s career took a significant leap forward when she joined The Hess Collection winery as a winemaker. Here, she focused on crafting the Allomi Cabernet Sauvignon and Napa Valley Chardonnay, wines that would further establish her as a formidable force in winemaking. Her success in these endeavors led to her promotion, where she took the helm of producing Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon and wines of the Small Block series, showcasing her versatility and innovative approach to winemaking.
Stephanie’s commitment to excellence and her unique vision culminated in her appointment as senior winemaker for Hess Persson Estates following the retirement of Dave Guffy in mid-2024. This role placed her at the forefront of overseeing all of the winery’s Lions Head and The Hess Collection products, a responsibility that speaks volumes about her expertise and the trust placed in her abilities.
Residing in Napa Valley with her winemaker husband and their daughter, Stephanie’s life is deeply rooted in the world of wine. Fluent in Italian and an avid photographer, she brings a multifaceted perspective to winemaking, integrating her diverse interests and experiences into her craft. Her journey from an enthusiastic student to a leading figure in the wine industry is a source of inspiration, highlighting the blend of science, art, and passion that defines the essence of winemaking.
