Philippe Bascaules, a renowned figure in the world of winemaking, has been shaping the destiny of Inglenook as its Director of Winemaking since 2016. His journey in the lush vineyards of Napa Valley began in 2011, coming from the prestigious wine region of Bordeaux. At Inglenook, his innovative winemaking techniques, combined with a sense of careful restraint, align perfectly with the Coppola family’s vision of reviving Inglenook’s historic reputation and exploring the rich possibilities of its land.

Bascaules’ philosophy towards winemaking is intriguing and poetic. He believes that an exceptional wine should not only exhibit remarkable aromatic complexity and structure but also retain an element of mystery, reminiscent of a captivating perfume. This pursuit of a delicate balance between robustness and subtlety is a hallmark of his approach.

His roots trace back to southwestern France, where he excelled academically, showing a keen interest in nature, science, and mathematics. This triad of interests laid the foundation for his eventual love affair with winemaking, a passion he discovered at the age of 22. His academic journey led him to attain a degree in Agricultural Engineering, specializing in œnology, from Montpellier University. This educational background provided him with a deep understanding of the scientific aspects of winemaking.

Beginning his career at the illustrious Château Margaux, one of France’s top First Growth Bordeaux estates, in 1990, Bascaules climbed the ranks to become its Estate Director a decade later. His time at Inglenook, coupled with his experience in crafting globally acclaimed wines, has enriched his expertise in all areas of winemaking. Bascaules’ vision is deeply connected to the unique characteristics of each vineyard site.

He strongly believes that every step in the winemaking process, from the initial handling of the grapes, plays a crucial role in defining the quality of the final product. This attention to detail and foresight mirrors the founding principles of Inglenook, showcasing Bascaules’ commitment to excellence and his profound respect for the craft.
