Pete Soergel Description

Pete Soergel’s journey from the apple orchards of Pennsylvania to the esteemed vineyards of California’s Russian River Valley is a tale of passion, perseverance, and the pursuit of excellence in winemaking. A third-generation farmer, Pete inherited not only a green thumb but also an indefatigable work ethic from his forebears. His early experiences in the family business, tending to apple orchards and working in the market, laid the foundation for a career deeply rooted in agricultural tradition.
The shift from orchards to vineyards began after Pete graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Horticulture. Encouraged by his Aunt Diane, a well-connected curator and collector with a keen appreciation for the finer things in life, Pete ventured west to California. This move was inspired by an introduction to Michael and Mary Calhoun of Landmark Vineyards, facilitated by his aunt. With no prior experience in the wine industry, Pete embarked on what would become a transformative journey in his life and career.
Pete’s inaugural harvest in 2006 at Landmark Vineyards marked the beginning of his love affair with California’s wine country. The temperate climate, stunning landscapes, and vibrant outdoor lifestyle of Sonoma quickly endeared themselves to him. Eager to broaden his horizons, Pete then traveled to New Zealand, working a harvest at Framingham Wines in Marlborough, further solidifying his passion for viticulture and winemaking.
Upon returning to the United States, Pete’s burgeoning career took a significant leap forward when he joined Kosta Browne as a harvest intern. His dedication and skill earned him a full-time position as cellar master following the 2007 vintage. This experience, working with one of the cult producers of Pinot Noir, was invaluable, shaping his approach to winemaking and deepening his understanding of the craft.
Pete’s journey came full circle when he returned to Landmark Vineyards, this time to work alongside winemaker Greg Stach. His mentor, Shane Finley, later beckoned him to Lynmar Estate, where Pete initially served as assistant winemaker. Under the guidance of Lynmar’s production team and through several successful vintages, Pete honed his craft, demonstrating a unique ability to capture the essence of the estate’s terroir in each bottle of wine.
In 2017, Pete was appointed winemaker at Lynmar Estate, a role that he describes as living the California dream. At Lynmar, he has found the perfect amalgamation of a world-class vineyard, state-of-the-art production facilities, and a supportive ownership team. Pete now spends his days crafting wines that are a true reflection of the Russian River Valley’s unique character, focusing on nuance, balance, and originality.
Pete Soergel’s story is a testament to the idea that following one’s passion, supported by a foundation of hard work and dedication, can lead to remarkable achievements. Today, as the winemaker at Lynmar Estate, Pete continues to draw from his rich agricultural heritage while pushing the boundaries of winemaking to produce exceptional wines that are celebrated for their depth, complexity, and connection to the land. His journey from the orchards of Pennsylvania to the vineyards of California is not just about making wine; it’s about crafting experiences that resonate with wine enthusiasts around the world, embodying the spirit of exploration and excellence that defines the heart of a true winemaker.
