Bruce Devlin Description
Bruce Devlin, a winemaker with a penchant for hands-on craftsmanship, has etched his name in the world of winemaking through a journey fueled by a deep-rooted passion. His odyssey into the realm of grapes and fermentation began with a unique trajectory, as Bruce initially harbored dreams of becoming a brewmaster. After a brief stint in forestry at Humboldt State and a flirtation with photography at San Jose State, his destiny unfolded at UC Davis, where he earned a degree in Fermentation Science, solidifying his commitment to the alchemy of winemaking.
In 1994, Bruce embarked on a transformative student work exchange program in Germany, delving into the heart of winemaking while laboring at Weingut Reichsrat Van Buhl in the renowned Pfalz region. This experience, immersed in the world of Germany’s famous Rieslings, marked a pivotal moment in Bruce’s journey, fostering a profound appreciation for the artistry of winemaking.
Following his German sojourn, Bruce and his wife, Danielle, traversed the globe, making wine in diverse terroirs, from Austria to France, South Africa to Australia. This global expedition became the crucible for honing Bruce’s skills and shaping his distinctive winemaking style, evident in the exceptional wines produced over the past two decades.
In 1999, Bruce made a significant move to Napa Valley, joining Ballentine Vineyards, where he became an integral part of a legacy rooted in Cabernet Sauvignon and other red varietals. Simultaneously, Bruce and Danielle embarked on their own vinous venture, Three Clicks Wines, a label paying homage to the telegraph operator’s code for the end of prohibition.
Bruce’s winemaking philosophy seamlessly blends science, art, and a deep respect for the grape. His adaptability shines through in the face of the annual challenge of harvesting estate-grown wines, creatively responding to the nuances that Mother Nature bestows upon each vintage. Beyond the vineyards and cellars, Bruce, alongside his wife and son, Blake, finds joy in the diverse tapestry of experiences in Napa Valley – from culinary explorations to kayaking adventures and skiing escapades around the world.
Bruce Devlin’s story is one of relentless exploration, a journey marked by a commitment to craftsmanship, a global perspective on winemaking, and an unwavering passion for creating wines that reflect the uniqueness of each terroir and vintage. In the ever-evolving world of wine, Bruce stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of a winemaker whose hands are perpetually immersed in the soil, coaxing out the best from the vines and crafting wines that tell stories of time and place.
