Andrew Wright Description
Andrew Wright’s journey from the arid landscapes of the Sonoran Desert to the lush vineyards of Napa Valley is not just a geographical shift but a profound transformation into a celebrated winemaker. His career, now deeply rooted in the fertile grounds of Merryvale Vineyards, is a testament to his passion for winemaking, a craft he stumbled upon almost serendipitously.
Born and raised where vineyards were scarce, Andrew’s initial exposure to winemaking came unexpectedly during a post-college road trip through the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. This experience ignited a fervent curiosity about viticulture and oenology, propelling him to devour wine literature and sample a myriad of wines. This phase was crucial as it broadened his palate and helped crystallize his winemaking philosophies.
Andrew’s professional journey began in the unlikely wine country of Sonoita, Arizona, where he took part in planting vines for Callaghan Vineyards. Working in the high desert’s challenging conditions, Andrew developed a gritty determination and a penchant for experimentation. His tenure at Callaghan laid the foundational skills necessary for his subsequent role at Arizona Stronghold, where he transitioned from vineyard labor to cellar operations. These early years in frontier winemaking honed his approach to crafting wines with intention and purpose.
In 2012, Andrew’s career took a significant turn as he moved to the world-renowned Napa Valley. There, he joined the teams at prestigious estates such as Harlan, BOND, Promontory, and The Napa Valley Reserve. His role at Fruition Sciences exposed him to advanced viticultural technologies and methodologies, enriching his expertise and expanding his scope of influence to include esteemed clients like Merryvale.
At Merryvale, Andrew ascended to the role of Winemaker, overseeing all aspects of wine production at the iconic St. Helena winery. His philosophy on winemaking is holistic, viewing it as an intricate blend of philosophy, agriculture, science, and art. He is particularly fascinated by the Profile Estate Vineyard at Merryvale, where he explores the unique interactions between soil, vine orientation, and microclimates. These elements converge to produce wines of exceptional power, complexity, and elegance, each vintage offering new insights and opportunities for refinement.
Andrew’s academic background, with a degree in History from the University of Arizona followed by winemaking studies at UC Davis, provides him with a unique perspective on the evolution of winemaking practices and their historical contexts. This depth of knowledge informs his approach to each growing season and harvest, striving to produce wines that not only showcase their distinctive terroir but also resonate with connoisseurs and casual drinkers alike.
Living in St. Helena with his family, Andrew finds balance in life outside the vineyard. His personal interests include cooking, a hobby that complements his professional focus on flavors and blending. Hiking through the scenic trails of Napa Valley offers him a physical as well as a mental respite, while his attempts to play guitar serve as a playful outlet for his creative expressions.
Andrew Wright’s career is a vivid illustration of how unexpected turns can lead to fulfilling destinations. From a novice with a nascent interest in wine to a master winemaker at Merryvale, his journey is a compelling narrative of passion, dedication, and continuous learning, making him a distinguished figure in the world of winemaking.
