Wine Description
The Walls Mahana 2019 is an opulent and complex expression of the Rhone varietals. It is named after Mr. Mahana, the founder of Freewater, the sister city to Milton in 1889. A unique blend of Syrah and Viognier, it boasts some remarkable flavors that make it a truly distinct wine. Notable aromas of cured meats, olive tapenade and leather are complemented by red and blackberry fruit, floral incense, and a touch of pepper and sandalwood.
This full-bodied wine is both rich and balanced, propelled by sweet tannins. It is aged in over 20% new French Oak barrels, allowing for a slow maturation and generous aging potential of up to 15 years. The Walls winemaker, Todd Alexander, has an experienced eye on this blend, bringing the individual components together for an exquisite expression of the Milton-Freewater terroir.
The moderate climate of Milton-Freewater, Oregon, is tailormade for producing Syrah-style wines. The summer days are long, warm and dry, allowing for steady ripening of the grapes, while the cool nights provide a necessary reprieve for the vines and allow the grapes to develop a beautiful expressiveness. With a favorable balance of warmth and chill, and an abundance of loamy soils, these conditions play an integral role in shaping The Walls Mahana Syrah.
Only 512 cases of this remarkable Syrah were produced, so snatch one up for your collection before it’s all gone. Enjoy this complex and elegant expression of Rhone varietals with roasted meats, robust cheeses, or creamy pastas. The 2019 Mahana will bring a touch of Freewater to any dinner.

John Woodard –
New to The Walls’ lineup, the Mahana is a suave and elegant syrah with funk from Rocks fruit. Impressive and worth adding to your cellar at $56.
Daniel Moster –
Poor quality, tasted like a cheap red wine. Regretted purchasing it after tasting at the winery.
Mary Goodman –
My first trip to Walla Walla; 5/12/2022-5/14/2022 (Walla Walla, Washington), : River Rock Vineyard, Walla Walla Valley. Sappy, red fruit, but a touch sweet. Interesting, not great. 30% Grenache which explains the sweetness.
Robert Leonard –
Valdemar Cellars Walla Walla Syrah Festival Grand Tasting: Pášxa and Walls Table were great. Least favorite of the 4, but still 92 points. Dark berries, coffee beans, roasted meat, white pepper, and olives with a medium finish.
Sherwood Heuschkel –
Enjoyable wine with good mouth feel and complexity. Only 2019 available on website. Possible bad bottle in previous review.
Edgar Hyland –
Young wine with high acidity. Needs a couple more years of cellaring for cherry notes to develop.
Rachelle Musumeci –
Bright red fruit dominates with some Rocks funk underneath. Incredibly smooth with silky tannins. 89 the way I tasted it, but probably closer to 92 at the proper temp.
Tamara Driver –
River Rock’s Walls wine is worth its $40 price. Blue and savory on the nose with added meaty notes on the palate.
Robin Fox –
Full-bodied with rich mouthfeel. Improved after vacuum-sealing on day two. Scored 92.
Jennifer Bennett –
Excellent Syrah, drinking beautifully.
Steven Akins –
Rock-style PnP with cured meats, bacon fat, olive, tobacco, and black pepper. Brighter finish than 2019. Good.
Richard Raney –
Clean red and black fruits, subtle hints of eucalyptus, mint, tobacco leaf, meats and smoke. Refreshing, not overly “Rocks” in style. Good juice!
Timothy Brough –
Deep musky nose with pleasant fruit and modest chalk. Enjoyable, though slightly thin finish.
Floyd Hutchinson –
Impressive depth and complexity, lives up to the price point.

The 2019 Syrah Mahana has a rocking nose of red and blackberry fruits as well as flowery incense, peppery spice, and sandalwood. It has a rounded, mouth-filling texture, full-bodied richness, and sweet tannins as well as brilliant balance, all pointing to a great Syrah that will have 10-15 years of longevity.
