Wine Description
Shafer Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch 2021 is a remarkable expression of Carneros-grown Chardonnay, skillfully crafted by winemaker Elias Fernandez of Shafer Vineyards. This single-vineyard wine is sourced from small-clustered clones of grapes that are carefully selected for their low yields and distinct flavors. The winery’s commitment to sustainability is reflected in the vineyard’s name, Red Shoulder Ranch, paying homage to the Red-shouldered Hawks and other birds of prey that contribute to their eco-friendly farming practices.
In the glass, the 2021 vintage captivates with its radiant and elegant presence. Its color, reminiscent of golden straw, sets the stage for a captivating sensory experience. As the aromas waft from the glass, one is greeted by the enticing scents of melon, honeysuckle, apricot, pineapple, and flint. These harmonious notes intertwine seamlessly, creating an olfactory symphony.
On the palate, this Chardonnay unveils a graceful dance of flavors. Energized fruit acidity takes the spotlight, infusing the wine with a lively mouthfeel. Vivid green apple and lemon zest flavors grace the palate, accompanied by a snappy finish. Subtle oak nuances play a supportive role, remaining secondary and allowing the fruit to shine. The absence of malolactic fermentation ensures that this Chardonnay retains a refreshing, clean, and mouth-watering character.
Renowned critics have showered the Shafer Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch 2021 with accolades. Wine Enthusiast awards it an impressive 95 points, noting its full-bodied nature, balanced by energized fruit acidity. Jeb Dunnuck also praises its fresh and vibrant style, highlighting its lemon, citrus fruits, honeyed minerality, and spice. Chad Ortiz –
Luscious peach dominates with subtle apple notes. Bold and delicious, a beloved, straightforward delight.
Howard Gates –
This wine resembles Sauvignon Blanc with green notes, lemon, and high acidity. It is pale lemon in color, relatively simple, and perfect for a summer picnic. It was matured in French oak barrels, with hints of vanilla emerging after being open for a while. Not suitable for creamy sauces due to the absence of malolactic fermentation.
William Calhoun –
5-star wine found at The White Barn in Kennebunkport, Maine.
Ethel Campbell –
Vibrant notes of pineapple, honey, and apricot. Exquisite.
