Wine Description
Remelluri Gran Reserva Rioja 2014 is a unique and timeless red wine crafted by Telmo Rodríguez in the Rioja Alavesa wine region of Spain. This remarkable blend is made in small batches from some of the estate’s oldest and most important vineyards. It contains 58% Tempranillo, 28% Garnacha, 11% Graciano, and 3% other indigenous grapes, which are aged for 70 years and cultivated on terraced vineyards at varying heights between 590m and 850m. The harvest from these formidable vineyards was conducted on October 12 ” October 24 in the challenging weather of 2014 and then artfully transformed by the bottle-resistant, low-intervention winemaking approach of Telmo and his team.
The resulting Remelluri Gran Reserva reveals a complex marriage between climatic conditions, wine making process and terrior. The wine features a deep garnet color and a nose that releases a medley of aromas such as blueberry, black-cherry, smokey nuances and just a hint of Christmas spice. On the palate, this sophisticated red offers up a wealth of flavor, including juicy notes of Blackberry, plum and black cherry, framed by a structure of fine-grained tannins. All components come together to reveal a long, polished finish that hints at the effect of time and the sheer effort that went in to creating this wine.
Noted for its immense appeal, Remelluri Gran Reserva has achieved impressive ratings in reviews from well-known wine critics, including 94 points from Wine Advocate, 94 points from James Suckling, and 96 points from Falstaff. An ideal choice for special occasions, this wine deserves to be noted for its deliciousness as well as its remarkable potential for aging. With this in mind, Remelluri Gran Reserva Rioja 2014 should be opened and enjoyed, but also cellared for many years to come.

Angela Maldonado –
Good modern Rioja with a refined palate, powdery tannins, and fresh acid. Although a bit too oaked at first, it had a good undercurrent of red fruit with hints of herb, spice, and tobacco. Great poise and lightness for a wine of its size and power.
Julia Card –
Rioja ($90) has big fruit with an expansive nose. It has a new-world, ripe fruit palate and an “international” style. It’s enjoyable, but not my preferred style and not worth the price.
Fatima Greer –
Intense Rioja with vanilla, blackberries, and spices. Edgy and pungent on the palate.
Norris Pearce –
“Bold and concentrated Rioja blend with rounded tannins and great fruit intensity for a promising future.”
Angela Dugar –
“Remelluri’s latest wine boasts a kernel-filled aroma and rich fruit depth, accompanied by a robust tannin finish superior to their Reserva 2008.”
Victor George –
Delicious, full-bodied yet elegant wine with light acidity. Worth investigating and will improve with age.
Trina Allison –
Medium-bodied with lively acidity and balanced structure. Notes of red fruit, leather, mold, and earth on the nose. Successful use of oak barrels. Dry finish with moderate tannins.
Sylvia Dotson –
French-oaked Rioja with over-ripeness tendency, hints of prune-like taste. Drink now to be safe. 13.5% ABV, sealed with cork.
Glenda Tasker –
Balanced and elegant Rioja with complex aromas of walnut, vanilla, cedar, plums, cherries, and liquorice. Intense and full-bodied with firm tannins and a persistent aftertaste. Well-integrated alcohol and medium+ acidity. Outstanding example of non-traditional yet not too modern Rioja.
Christopher Brobst –
Review: Rioja Reservas and Gran Reservas – Opaque, sweet nose, very tannic, very long.
John Shropshire –
Fresh black fruit with a tannic palate and a slightly oaky finish, but overall a good wine.
Mattie Lozada –
Vindredi (Spanish Riojas, plus…) in Bellevue, WA: Spicy start, elegant body with dark fruit, fine tannins on finish.
Laura Walker –
Youthful appearance with ripe fruit, spicy oak, and mineral freshness. Velvety with a long, fresh finish. Wow-wine that successfully balances modernity and authenticity. Drink from 2019 for two decades. Shaves 2-3 points off the score if rough and coarse in the future.
Scott Denning –
Average Tempranillo, delicate and feminine with a caramel streak. Relatively generic, not memorable. May improve with aging.
Douglas Provost –
HDH Auction wines (Tru, Chicago IL): Aromatic nose with dark red cherries, smoke notes, licorice, coffee, vanilla beans, and strawberries. Medium/full bodied with medium+ tannins and acidity. Needs more time to fully show itself, but good depth and balance with a dark red fruited base.
Robyn Flores –
Decant for one hour or more for best results. Fruit flavors are just starting to emerge. Cellar for 5-10 years for optimal enjoyment.
Paula Washington –
Good wine, but cork may be too loose and wet. Not as impressive as previous bottle. Tannins have slight edge. Possible low-level TCA. No deterioration on second day.
Beatrice Waters –
Smooth with good structure. Pleasure to drink now, but will improve with age.
Catalina Garcia –
Powerful yet elegant Rioja with blue fruit, sweet tobacco, and roasted notes. Exclusive French oak, medium body, and nice acidity. Highly recommended for modern style Rioja lovers.
Victoria Gismondi –
Excellent value, medium(+) bodied Rioja with fresh black fruit, medium acidity, silky tannins, and a long, spicy cherry finish. Luscious with secondary and tertiary flavors of nutmeg, toast, cedar, chocolate, and tar. Drink now or enjoy later, will last at least 10 years. Perfect with slow-cooked lamb. Cheers! 🍷🍷
Ileana Stevens –
Dry and restrained, this Rioja developed well over 2 hours and showed classic characteristics. A good balance between fruit and oak make it worth aging for another year or two.
Peggy Sterner –
Dark red with a red rim. Subtle nose, rich and lingering taste with full blackcurrant notes. Wait five years to see how it develops.
Ashley Williams –
Oak and citrus notes with hints of vanilla.
Buddy Gorby –
Drink now with aeration or wait 5 years for full pleasure. Young, firm and delicious with promising potential.
Lana Fuller –
Modern and pleasing red with good body and more fruit than herbal. Slightly too international.
Deborah Carpenter –
A fantastic wine with strawberries, spices, and round tannins. Leave it on the fridge for 2 days with the cork and enjoy. Long live ahead.
Karisa Macdonald –
Plum and cigar notes. Great, but needs aging.
Emily Templeton –
Aging brings in-between state to earthy, tobacco flavors. Refined tannins give it a cashmere texture.
Scott Romiro –
Remelluri Rioja: Smooth and supple with a hint of fine tannin. More Garnacha and Graciano. Better wine than the Reserva. ***
Chris Siegel –
Underripe fruit and hard tannins dominate this Gran Reserva. Minimal oak influence.
Jason Harrison –
Well-balanced Rioja with a smooth and rich taste, although somewhat anonymous and late to the game.
Alan Williams –
Medium ruby color with a great nose of blackberry, sweet spice, and clove, with oak spice of coconut. The palate has more ripeness than the nose with blackberry jam and quite strong flavors of oak. It has a long finish with great balance.
Daniel Ollar –
Rating: 91 Points.
Kenneth Divine –
Luxurious deep red with earthy and dark berry aromas. Velvet smooth texture with rich fruits and silky tannins. Red cherry, bitter cherry, and hints of Brunello di Montalcino on the finish. Medium acidity balances the slightly sweet undertone. Perfect with spicy food.
Dennis Hall –
Bouchoné: Excellent wine.
Wallace Appleton –
Delicious Rioja alternative. Big wine with deep dark fruit and long finish. Perfect for holiday meal. Ready now but can age for 10+ years.
Luke Cross –
Rioja Remelluri has a wide, silky texture with sharp acidity and a long finish. It has notes of flesh, cinnamon, thyme, mahogany, leather, and red berries. It is best opened at least when it is fifteen years old.
Jorge Layman –
Full-bodied and smooth with a fruity taste. Still tannic on the finish, but overall delicious. Best consumed within 3 years.
Yolanda Prok –
Classy, long-lasting and fruity. Great now and will age well. Can’t resist.
Kristen Blair –
“Rich, chocolatey tannins and deep mixed fruit with fantastic mouth coverage. Will be a classic Rioja in a decade or two. Great stuffing and balance.”
Ross Martinez –
Great pairing with Mexican food. Dark berry and herbal notes. Near peak, but has potential to age longer. Save for a few years.
Angel Mitchell –
Forgot the bottle after coravin tasting; maderized.
Jewell Schuetze –
Excellent.
Janice Martinez –
UWS a random set of wines (@ JB), : Tasty and mature wine with pleasant oak, mild acidity and tannin. Really nice wine.
Lucien Weuve –
Smooth medium-bodied wine with dark fruit flavors and an earthy finish. Needs more time to resolve the vanilla oak. Lacks character and terroir presence. 88+
Jena Banton –
Fantastic Rioja with less oak influence than Vina Ardanza. Surprisingly youthful with tongue-coating tannins, cherry, and dark fruit. Well balanced, an absolute delight.
Peter Ladner –
Lighter style Rioja with notes of red cherry, blackberry, tobacco, and earthy tones. French oak used. A great choice at $55 per bottle.
Gloria Trogdon –
“Superb Rioja, better than 2009. Nutty start, fruity with a dominant cherry taste. Earthy tones at the end. Highly recommended.”
Deborah Booker –
Enjoyable Rioja with dominant dry fruit flavors and a perfect tannin-acid mix, finishing with a meaty/earthy note.
Nadia Cross –
Excellent.
William Shull –
Dense cherry nose, with flowers, herbs, lavender, licorice, and tobacco. Fruity, dry, and perfectly balanced, with a subtle acidity and long mineral finish. Modern Rioja style. A wine to savor quietly. (96-97+)
Charles Crouch –
Okay, price dependent but satisfactory.
Karen Franco –
Graceful wine with deep garnet color, notes of violets, raspberry, eucalyptus, and boysenberry. Grippy tannins with a dry finish. Pair with BBQ pulled pork wraps, onions, pickles, jalapeños and charred shisitios.
Brigette Murphy –
Delightful Gran Reserva Rioja with a perfect blend of blackberry, cherry, blueberry, fig, cedar, dill, and baking spice.
Anna Massie –
Decent Rioja with subtle savory notes, but too dark and overpriced for my palate. Would opt for Ardanza instead.
Sharon Gerry –
Good wine, but not as good as 2010 and 2012. Strong tobacco flavor.
Michelle Stocks –
Rioja: Great berries, fruit upfront, beautiful tannins. Lacks 2010 finesse.
Kenneth Brown –
A balanced, complex and velvety wine with ripe dark cherries, cassis, dried herbs, and elegant leather notes. Enjoy now or until 2032.
Alfred Shell –
Excellent young Spanish wine with smoked meat, sweet fruit, and juicy flavors. Best to bury it if you have one.
Leon Eldridge –
Superb wine with blackberry, plum, and cherry notes. Silky and well-balanced with integrated tannins. My wife wants to drink this every day of the week.
Robin Wright –
Smooth tannins and nice fruit, but not outstanding.
Francis Moore –
Dark cherry color with intense fruit aroma, earthy elements, and a hint of leather. Light-bodied with fine tannins, velvety texture, and just enough acidity. A different but impressive Rioja.
Dean Kersey –
Tasted the 2012 Reserva, twice the price of the 2014 version. Despite high ratings, it lacked uniqueness. Nice aromas and juicy flavors with a long finish of spice, black pepper, cinnamon, red fruits, prune, and smoke. Upgraded from 91 to 92, but not worth the price.
Micheal Richards –
Dark color, black fruit, tobacco, sandalwood, spicy wood and pencil shavings on the nose. Soft start, high concentration, beautiful freshness. P 94 JS 97.
Dora Anderson –
Nose: dark fruit, earthy, herbs. Palate: heavy, strong tannins, high alcohol. Drinkable, but declining.
Emelia Ellis –
“Fresh and tart with cherry and pine notes. Youthful with medium ruby color and drying tannins.”
Joyce Cole –
Typical Rioja, but not exceptional even after 12 years. Best without aeration and paired with beefy quesadillas.
Jamila Dowell –
Review: Red wine with medicinal and spicy notes, closed on the palate with a lack of tension.
Charla Counts –
Dark berries, oak, red and dark berries, sweet spices, chocolate, good acidity and tannin. Beautiful wine.
Leah Lindsay –
Review: Too tannic and austere. Strong alcohol and oak scent. Requires 3+ years of aging.
Aisha Jobe –
Bought a six-pack, had three bottles which were too closed and tannic. Holding off on remaining bottles for now.
Sheri Gonzales –
Dark fruit and herb notes, tannic and alcoholic with no oak trace. Age it for years.
Crystal Kolb –
Solid matured Tempranillo with oak, dark berries, smoke, and nice texture. Great performance after 30 mins, stays strong for a while. Nose weakened but fair on second day.
Wilma Schultz –
Purple-red Rioja. Closed initially, but improved after 2 hours in a decanter. Light body, medium acidity, fruity, no wood notes, long aftertaste. Superb sipper with a bright future.
Ann Perez –
Appearance: Medium intensity, Garnet color. Nose: Pronounced intensity, floral notes of rose and violet, red and black fruit, herbal and oak notes. Palate: Dry sweetness, medium(+) acidity and tannin, high alcohol, medium(+) body, pronounced flavor intensity, long finish. Quality: Outstanding. Personal Score: 94. Drink now, not suitable for aging. Epic: 3’9.
