Wine Description
Aleste 2018 shows a more concentrated iteration of the vintage, reflecting the warm, sheltered, low altitude vines on the side of the famed Cannubi hill.
On the nose, the aromas leap from the glass, showing red and dark cherries and raspberries, with the spice notes so typical of Cannubi Boschis.
On the palate, the deeper concentration is also more closed than in its brother the Le Vigne, showing grippy, mature tannins that will require a few years to soften up and integrate fully.
The finish exhibits good freshness and long silky tannins.

Critical Acclaim
Wine Spectator
An open-knit Barolo highlighted by plum, cherry, leather and tar flavors. Supple in texture before firming up, with dusty, refined tannins lingering on the finish. This should evolve nicely with some bottle age.
Wine Enthusiast
Fragrant purple flower, woodland berry and menthol aromas form the nose along with whiffs of spice. The elegant, medium-bodied palate offers juicy pomegranate, red currant and oak-driven spice set against an acidic backbone. Taut, fine-grained tannins leave a drying close. Drink 2025–2033.
Wine Advocate
Made with fruit from Cannubi Boschis, the Luciano Sandrone 2018 Barolo Aleste is plump and ripe, but this wine also shows a more delicate character that is its ace card. The aromas are filigreed and fine with dark fruit, spice and licorice. The effect is integrated, and the wine shows a lovely, softer personality to balance out this mildly concentrated expression.
James Suckling
Dried red berries and dried flowers, almost tobacco on the nose. Citrus and minty notes add character. Medium-to full-bodied, elegant and silky palate that thickens out with fine, creamy tannins as it progresses. Super texture to this, gently coating the palate. Rather firmer just at the end for now. Really refined and elegant. Best from 2024.

Monica Guffey –
Dégustation chez Luciano Sandrone: Couleur soutenue, nez impressionnant, plus sur la puissance que Le Vigne, sous-bois, fruits noirs, bouche pleine et grasse, tannins encore présents, beau potentiel pour un très beau Barolo.
Pamela Montero –
Slightly above the Le Vigne from 2018.Classical Cannubi notes with some violets, sour cherries and chalky minerality.Probably on of the age worthy Barolo’s in 2018 but still less potential than usual for this cru.
Marlene Martino –
Luciano Sandrone visit & tasting (winery): Pale Ruby blackPronounced aromas and flavors of ripe tannic fruits, oak-vanilla, spice, complex, long finish, high aging potential, can drink now or age further.as expected still very young and tannic Barolo – though very promising to become a great Barolo.

La Festa del Barolo (Los Angeles) Grand Tasting (Marino Restaurant, Los Angeles): Oaky like Le Vigne, but lighter and more elegant. At least there is some wine here.
Armando Lozada –
Festa dal Barolo AM tastingRd fruited, floral and spice driven nose. Cannubi perfume with good soil and minerality sense. Structured and well balanced if not my favorite style.

La Festa del Barolo 2023 (The Pool, NYC): The 2018 Barolo Aleste wafts up with a darkly alluring bouquet of crushed black currants offset by lifting hints of cedar and mint. This is a soft-textured yet cool-toned effort, with tart wild berry fruits motivated by brisk acidity. It finishes grippy and full of tension with a reverberation of raspberry under an air of inner rose.

La Festa del Barolo: Masterclass (and burgers) (The Pool/Grill): With Luciano’s passing a few weeks ago it was amazing that the Sandrone’s made the event and I’d be surprised if there were many dry eyes in the house after they did their tribute to him. In our visits it is amazing the breadth of winemakers who talk about Luciano like the grandfather of Barolo. It seems he was always ready to lend a helping hand and play mentor and while the wines may or may not be the ones I love I do appreciate what influence he had. Reminds me of Robert Mondavi stories. For those who don’t know, this is the Cannubi Boschis renamed after Barb’s two children – Alessia (likely the future winemaker) and Stefano. It’s a charming story about a man who cares more about his family than trying to maximize the potential value of a label. The wine itself is a bit more of the modern style, some drying tannin here, a bit more heft to it. Give it a lot of time and perhaps we find that that style really does support the aging.

La Festa del Barolo 2023: The ’18 Aleste seems to balance the modern and traditional style of Barolo in a very attractive package. This is in line with most of my experience with Sandrone, i.e. tasting the Le Vigne across a few vintages, but sometimes Sandrone has featured wines at La Festa that I did not prefer (i.e., the 2013 Vite Talin).I found the nose on the Sandrone somewhat muted at the tasting, but I think it was better when tasted again at lunch. I found classic aromatics of meaty, dark red fruit, fresh sweet roses, and fresh herbal tones. On the palate, the wine was on the medium to light bodied side, with a medium level of fine grained tannin. On the palate, the wine showed a beautiful sweetness with dark red fruits, sweet spices, and red florals.

Muscular but fine. Should develop very well.

The 2018 Barolo Aleste is gorgeous, but also very quite today. There’s terrific purity to the dark red/purplish fruit and a good bit of volume too, but readers will have to be patient. Bright acids and firm tannins lend energy. I admire the presence and texture here. The Aleste, from Cannubi Boschis, benefits from a site that can handle moisture. This is nicely done.
