Joy Castro –
New Napa arrival tasting featuring 30 wines mostly from 2017, with a few 2018 whites and new releases from 2016 and 2015. Approachable and offers immediate drinking pleasure but lacks refinement, depth, and concentration. Diamond Creek Volcanic Hill 2017 and Viader 2017 were the standout wines. Detert East Block Cabernet Franc 2017 has a unique character.
Kellie Coleman –
Floral and fruity notes with earthy and chocolate undertones. Strong tannins.
Ray Jones –
Dark plum and currant notes, with a hint of spice. Well-rounded body. Long finish with moderate tannin. Needs a long decant.
Darlene Moeller –
Napa Cabernet with black fruit, herbaceous notes, and hints of graphite, tobacco, and cassis. Requires decanting for at least 3 hours and aging for further improvement.
Richard Tewksbury –
Young but promising, with dark fruit, spices, and cigar notes. Needs a long decant and will be best in 5+ years. Strong oak due to 100% new oak in inaugural vintage. Worth cellaring.
Jorge Boulanger –
Dark, strong, and velvety with blackberry and plum flavors. Decant for 6 hours. Built for aging.
John Capps –
Intense and savory Cabernet with forceful flavor that needs time to blossom. Aromas of black cherry, pencil lead, mocha, and roasted red pepper. Soft and ripe flavors of blackberry, tapenade, ribeye, and cocoa bean. 93-94 rating now, with upside in 2023 or later.
Douglas Shaw –
Deep, dark purple magenta color. Notes of toffee, coffee, blackberry, cassis, and subtle mint chocolate on the nose. Smooth, dry palate with full tannins on the finish. Needs another year to develop.
Virginia Strange –
2018 version is ripe and polished with rustic tannins. Big potential but needs a few more years.
Agnes Olney –
Well-made, Bordeaux-esque Cab with notes of black cherry, blackberry, flint, sage, date, and honey gummy bear. Dry, satiny palate with modestly chalky acidity and lower intensity tannins on the longish finish. Enjoyable now, with good aging potential. Winemaker: Francoise Peschon.
Phylis Sprague –
Dark, mountain fruit Calistoga wine with blackberry cassis flavors and silky tannins. A long finish that improves on day two. Ordered 3 more bottles. Hold. 97+
Harold Valera –
Initial beautiful nose with herbal and earthy notes. Weird sediment on the palate, but resolved after swirling. Abundant tannins recommend decanting. At 10-12 hours, blackberries and earthy notes. Score based on 10-12 hour tasting, wait 5+ years to open next bottle.
Betsy Warburton –
Great potential, quality fruit and winemaking on display. Needs more time as it has a pedestrian streak. 3-day follow-up recommended. Potential 97-98 rating in the future.
Andrea Williams –
Deep purplish magenta color. Buttery dark caramel, tarry blackberry, black cherry, lavender and dandelion on the nose. Smooth, dry palate with full tannins. Needs one more year to integrate.
Josephine Franklin –
Austere but fresh, lacks pleasure and fruit generosity. Wait 10 years.
Warren Estrada –
Impressive wine, but needs patience. 12+ hours of air made it a well-rounded, gorgeous wine. Day 3 rating: 95+.
Kevin Mclaughlin –
Beautifully balanced with notes of cherry, tobacco, citrus, and earth. Classic Napa Cab vibe. Lovely acidity and chewy tannins on a long finish. Cheers!
VIN –
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon from Heimark is unbelievably elegant, even more than it was last year. Deep, dark and racy, the 2018 possesses tremendous depth and intensity that just builds with time in the glass. Black cherry, lavender, mocha, spice and crushed rocks lend nuance to this potent Calistoga Cabernet. The 2018 is outrageously delicious. Don’t miss it.
