This exceptional offering from Elk Cove Vineyards, nestled in the heart of Willamette Valley, resonates with the unique terroir of the region. The Roosevelt Pinot Noir, a gem among the Elk Cove estate Pinot Noirs, stands as a paragon of Oregonian viticulture.
The Elk Cove Roosevelt Pinot Noir 2021, sourced from the esteemed Roosevelt vineyard, presents a mesmerizing hue of medium ruby-purple. This color, emblematic of the intense and concentrated fruit harvested in the remarkable vintage of 2021, captures the eye with its vibrant intensity. The Elk Cove Pinot Noir Willamette Valley, specifically from this vineyard, reflects the meticulous care in viticulture and winemaking, evident in its striking appearance.
On the nose, this Elk Cove Pinot Noir review would be incomplete without mentioning its complex and expressive aroma. A bouquet that intertwines crushed cherries and smoked meats with streaks of graphite and pipe tobacco, it offers a delightful prelude to the flavors that await. The addition of notes like blackberries, violets, and seared steak, complemented by hints of orange pith and leather, further enhances the sensory experience.
The palate of the Elk Cove Willamette Valley Pinot Noir unfolds in layers of sumptuous flavors. Dominated by ripe cherry, blackberry, and raspberry, the Elk Cove Pinot Noir is enriched with nuances of vanilla, cocoa, cinnamon, and clove. The integration of these components results in a full texture and mouthfeel, making every sip a journey through varied and harmonious flavors. The silky tannins and elevated acidity ensure a structure that is both plush and dynamic, with a vibrant finish highlighted by notes of green tea and orange peel.
The 2021 vintage at Elk Cove Vineyards Pinot Noir was shaped by a series of climatic challenges, from rainfall during bloom to a once-in-a-millennium heat dome event. However, the resilience of the vines, particularly the 5-26 year old vines in Roosevelt vineyard, combined with organic practices and careful cluster thinning, yielded a harvest that was not just high in quality but also bountiful. This is reflected in the Elk Cove Pinot Noir Roosevelt, where the intense color and flavors burst forth, a characteristic hallmark of Elk Cove’s red Pinot Noirs.
Critical acclaim for the Elk Cove Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, particularly the Roosevelt, has been overwhelmingly positive. Rated 96 points by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, the Roosevelt is praised for its intensity and expressiveness. Wine Enthusiast’s designation as a ‘Cellar Selection’ with 93 points and Wine Spectator’s commendation for its elegance and dynamic flavor profile, further solidify its standing. The Roosevelt is as majestic as the elk it is named for. Aromas of blackberries, violets and seared steak are accented by notes of orange pith and leather. Silky tannins and elevated acidity support a set of flavors that range from ripe blackcap raspberry to tangy hibiscus tea. Drink 2025–2036.

The 2021 Pinot Noir Roosevelt is intense and expressive this vintage. Medium ruby-purple, it opens with streaks of graphite and pipe tobacco accenting a core of crushed cherries and smoked meats. The medium-bodied palate is impressively concentrated yet offers soft, silky tannins and seamless acidity. It’s full of fragrant fruit and has a layered, spicy finish. It’s a touch more coiled than the other 2021s in this lineup and will benefit from 3-5 years in bottle.

    Decanter
Intensely ripe and opulent, this Pinot Noir from the estate Roosevelt Vineyard, which is about 1ha and planted to high density, is farmed to create wines of intensity. Aromas of Ripe boysenberry and rich cola spices jump forth from the glass. The palate continues with jammy blackberry fruits, cinnamon, clove and streaks of umami-based minerality.

Elk Cove has really knocked it out of the park with its 2021 Pinot Noirs. The Roosevelt is another stunning example of Oregon Pinot at its best. This one spent 10 months in 38% new French oak barrels and showcases a lovely medium ruby-blue core with a fluorescent pink rim in the glass. It opens up to a very earthy and spicy nose – think notes of wet-tilled earth, tobacco leaves, dried lavender and crushed black peppercorns alongside those lovely blue-fruited aromas and flavors. Acidity is on point and integrates perfectly with the stratified structure, giving it lovely depth and presence. Highly recommended and editor’s choice.

From a vineyard planted in 1993 behind the winery in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, the 2021 Pinot Noir Roosevelt is a nearly opaque ruby-red and slowly opens in the glass to reveal dark layers of lavender, kirsch, and undercurrents of graphite. Fleshy and full-bodied, it remains elegant and weightless, with velvety tannins and broad shoulders emerging through the mid-palate, as well as notes of rocky earth and good purity in its ripe frame. Drink 2025-2035.
